Chapter 44: Night Raid
Chapter 44: Night Raid
By the flickering starlight in the sky, a group of people traveled through the wilderness. The camp of the wilderness tribe alliance was located east of Su Lun’s territory, over eighty li away from Su Lun’s camp.
According to the speed of the Gnolls, if they attacked Su Lun’s territory, it would take two days to arrive. However, for the Barbarians and Su Lun, traveling light, they could get there in just three hours.
To save energy, Su Lun and his group brought several carriages this time. The carriages were used to transport armor, and each person carried their own weapons. Besides weapons, the carriages also carried a large amount of pinewood.
Pinewood could be found everywhere in the wasteland. This plant liked to grow in cold areas. Because it had a high oil content in its trunk, it was very suitable for making torches. It was a must-have item for home travel, killing, and treasure hunting.
There were many animals in the wilderness that hid during the day and came out at night. But after seeing Su Lun and his group, they all stayed far away. The group traveled for six hours in the wilderness and finally, at two in the morning, reached a place three kilometers away from the wilderness tribe alliance camp.
“Master, you have finally arrived.” A figure rushed over quickly and threw himself at Su Lun’s feet. It was Floer.
“Get up. Has there been any activity at the tribe alliance camp?” Su Lun asked.
“Master, there was some disturbance among those alliance forces in the evening. Gnolls from two tribes were fighting over food.”
“What’s the situation now?”
“The camp has settled down for the night.”
Su Lun nodded. It was now two in the morning, the time when people were sleeping soundly. He had the Barbarian Guard rest here while he took Floer and sneaked toward the tribe alliance camp.
The three-kilometer distance passed quickly. Su Lun hid in a tree outside the camp and secretly observed. The tribe alliance camp was built very crudely and chaotically. One could say even a rookie leader’s camp would be better than this.
What made Su Lun even more speechless was that such a large camp had no one on night watch. No, the Goblins and Kobolds on night watch had fallen asleep.
From over ten meters away, Su Lun could still hear the Goblin’s snoring rising and falling.
After observing outside the camp for half an hour, Su Lun took Floer and left, returning to their temporary base. By now, after a night of long travel, the most elite Barbarian Guard had recovered.
“Everyone, put on your gear. It’s time for battle!” Su Lun said, taking out his spear from his Storage Space.
The thirty-five Barbarian Warriors immediately sprang into action, putting on their armor. In less than five minutes, everyone was ready and waiting. One by one, the heavily armed Barbarian Warriors were filled with killing intent.
“Boss, we’re ready. Give the order!” Johnson said, feeling the shiny blade of his axe, his eyes flickering with fire, eager to try.
“Yeah, boss, we can’t wait any longer!”
“My axe is thirsty for blood!”
“This time we must kill to our heart’s content!”
The Barbarian Warriors all clamored for battle.
“Stop being so impatient!” Su Lun slapped Johnson aside.
“There are only thirty-six of us. That camp has at least five thousand Kobolds, Goblins, and Gnolls, plus Trolls. If we charge in recklessly, how many can you kill? You’d be exhausted before finishing them off.”
“Use your brains!”
“Boss, did we come here to do a hit-and-run?” Johnson asked carefully.
“Idiot.” Su Lun glanced at him and then said, “See those torches? Each of you take a few. Once we get inside, don’t linger in fights. Use the torches to set the entire camp on fire!”
“Understood, boss!”
“Grab the stuff, let’s get started!” Su Lun looked toward the huge camp a few kilometers away. “The barbecue party begins. Hope you like it!”
…
The wilderness night was very quiet, occasionally with the sound of the north wind howling. The temperature at night was low, and even the night-watch Goblins and Kobolds had hidden in corners to sleep.
Just then, a rustling sound came from the dark grass outside the camp. Soon, one shadow after another emerged from the darkness. These shadows were over two meters tall, wearing heavy armor, their giant axes gleaming coldly. They were silent, like a group of Demons crawling out of the Abyss.
“Light the torches and follow me!”
The torches made from pinewood were very flammable. When brought close to a candle, they burst into orange flames within seconds. As they burned, they crackled and popped, emitting a strong pine scent into the air.
All thirty-six torches were lit. Then, at Su Lun’s command, the Barbarian Guard formed a Cone Formation and charged toward the camp.
Wearing equipment that weighed over a hundred pounds, the thirty-plus Barbarians running created an overwhelming momentum. Their heavy footsteps woke the night-watch Goblins and Kobolds. Upon discovering the enemy, these cannon fodder shouted and tried to flee, but it was already too late.
These wilderness tribes never expected Su Lun to sneak in for a night raid. The camp’s defense was casually assigned to unlucky individuals, resulting in a lax defense that was easily breached. Su Lun rushed to the camp’s main gate, swung his spear, and smashed the gate to pieces. Over thirty Barbarians followed closely behind. Wherever they passed, corpses lay scattered everywhere.
Following Su Lun’s instructions, the group did not engage with these monsters. After charging into the camp, the Barbarians began setting fires crazily. The tribe alliance camp soon became a sea of flames.
The camp was built very crudely and chaotically. More and more flames spread. The tents had been coated with a lot of oil for waterproofing, so even a few sparks could set an entire tent on fire. Added to that, the tribe alliance camp had not cleared away the weeds properly, so sparks easily ignited the dry grass. Soon, the fire grew larger and larger.
Faced with this situation, many Goblins and Kobolds began to scatter and flee. Their escape prompted more Goblins and Kobolds to run. Originally, the command of these wilderness tribes was problematic. Once chaos broke out, the tribe leaders could not control their respective armies.
Some Gnolls tried to regroup their forces. The Barbarian Warriors pulled out their Hand Axes, threw one, and split a Gnoll’s head in half. For monsters that did not resist, they did not exterminate them all but drove them from behind, making them scatter and flee to create more chaos. Those who dared to resist and attack were killed as quickly as possible.
The goal was to impose the greatest shock on these wilderness races. Fleeing offered a chance to live; resistance meant certain death! Originally, the army formed by these wilderness tribes had loose discipline and was a motley crew. After suffering a sudden night raid, they became even more chaotic.
