Chapter 220: Magic Items

Necromancers, manipulating the dead and defiling souls, were seen as heretics by many churches. They would be driven out or killed on sight. The Voodoo School was particularly underhanded.

They had little advantage in direct fights, even weak. But in tricking and harming people, no one surpassed them. The Voodoo School excelled at curses. Some curses acted instantly, like weakness or aging. Others were formless and invisible.

They captured a trace of your essence, then used it to cast a curse. This kind of curse was invisible and hard to guard against. Once hit, the person would die within days. Besides curses, they were masters of poisons. But worse, they once got involved in fighting for worldly thrones. Several deaths of royal heirs in different kingdoms were linked to them.

Since then, the school faced resistance everywhere. No one wanted to die mysteriously. Even those who had once used the Voodoo School to kill rivals acted the same. As winners, they feared being taken down the same way. This made the Voodoo School hated by everyone.

“How is this possible!?”

The middle-aged man stared at Su Lun, shocked. He blurted out, “You resist curses? Impossible! How can your body be this strong!”

Su Lun was curious about curses. This formless attack puzzled him. If he could understand its workings, he wanted to find a way to defend against it.

The man glared at Su Lun, fierce light in his eyes. “Such a powerful body… I might even forge a Death Knight from it.”

“To find such excellent material in this remote Underworld. I will refine you carefully.”

The man’s stare made Su Lun uneasy. Could this guy like men? Many Necromancers had a taste for corpses. Plus, corrupted by deathly energy, living poorly, and facing hatred, their minds must be twisted.

“Twisted Shadows, Skeleton Warriors, attack!”

At the Necromancer’s command, many undead creatures rushed Su Lun. Seeing this, Su Lun avoided a direct fight. He turned and ran. The undead creatures chased him. Though possessing some intelligence, unless they reached Legendary Level, they only had residual consciousness. They could only follow simple orders.

Su Lun sped away. The undead creatures pursued relentlessly. The flying Twisted Shadows were closest. The Skeleton Warriors quickly fell behind. Soon, they disappeared from the Necromancer’s sight. Controlling them became very difficult now. The Necromancer had to chase too.

Su Lun lured the undead to where the Gray Dwarves lay in ambush. Both sides moved fast. Minutes later, Su Lun reached the Gray Dwarves’ trap site.

Here, Su Lun finally stopped running. Energy erupted from within him. Powerful lightning swept the space. The closely pursuing Twisted Shadows were instantly engulfed in a lightning field. The Purple Dragon Halberd carved lightning dragon figures through the air.

— Silver Dragon’s Reverse Scale Spear!

A dragon shape made of lightning formed instantly. It charged towards the Twisted Shadows! They had no time to dodge. The dragon flashed past them. All Twisted Shadows stopped moving. Lightning exploded from within them, drowning them instantly.

Clattering sounds echoed. Many Soul Crystals fell from the sky. Su Lun ignored them. Instead, he sped towards the Necromancer. The Necromancer was still some distance from the fight. Though powerful, Necromancers relied more on summoned creatures.

Take the Necromancy School’s Legendary Spell, Undead Plague. It had limited effect on the strong. But against ordinary people, it brought disaster. It could turn a city’s population into undead easily. A Necromancer’s personal combat ability was rather weak.

Su Lun soon spotted the Necromancer rushing towards the fight but still distant.

The moment the Necromancer saw Su Lun, he didn’t fight. He turned and fled! But as he spun around, two swift shapes darted from the nearby shadows. Moving ghost-quick, they appeared beside him immediately, launching a surprise attack.

These dark figures were Drow Elf Rogues! Two Third Tier assassins striking! Though a tier weaker than the Necromancer, ambushing a Necromancer at close range had a high chance of success.

Feeling deathly danger, the Necromancer couldn’t cast a spell. But his ring flashed. Four bone shields instantly formed all around him, just blocking the two Rogues’ strikes.

Before he could even sigh in relief, came the sound of triggers snapping.

Twang! Twang! Twang!

Refined Steel bolts shot forth instantly. Each Rogue held a small, fine crossbow. These could fire three bolts at once. Short range, only fifty paces, lacking accuracy. But within ten paces, they could pierce Iron Armor! The bone shields cracked instantly… then shattered!

The two Rogues attacked again. This time, the Necromancer’s last two Skeleton Warriors finally reacted! They quickly struck at the Rogues.

Under attack, flustered, the Necromancer panicked! He desperately cast a protective spell on himself and turned to flee again. But the Rogues’ delay allowed Su Lun to catch up.

Seeing the fleeing Necromancer, Su Lun clenched his hand in the air.

— Lightning Spear!

A javelin made of lightning formed instantly in his grasp. He hurled it straight at the Necromancer.

BOOM!

The Lightning Spear struck the energy shield before the Necromancer! The shield held for just a second… then shattered violently! The remaining bone shields moved to block it… but after less than a second, they shattered too! The Spear dimmed only slightly.

The Necromancer’s face twisted in panic. He instantly activated a gold ring on his hand. A pale gold Energy Shield shimmered into place, intercepting the Lightning Spear. The Spear and shield locked tight! Lightning crawled over their point of contact. The gold shield visibly strained and pulsed… then POOFED into countless tiny sparks and vanished! Weakened to a fifth of its size after breaking through, the Lightning Spear crashed into the Necromancer’s chest.

Thud!

A sharp pain shot through the Necromancer’s chest. The stench of burning flesh filled the air. A charred patch darkened his robes.

Su Lun closed in rapidly. Seeing the Necromancer readying another spell, Su Lun instantly cast Magic Nullification! As the spell formed, the Necromancer suddenly felt cut off! Elemental Energy vanished around him, as if encased in an invisible bubble.

“What is this? Why can’t I cast spells?!” Cut off from the elements, the Necromancer paled completely in fear.

“It’s you! I’ll kill you!” The man instantly triggered a third ring – black this time. A sinister energy pulsed outwards instantly. Su Lun’s head felt like it was slammed by a hammer! His vision swam with pain.

— Soul Shock!

The pain came fast, gone just as quickly. Su Lun stiffened for an instant… then recovered.

“Quite the collection of trinkets,” Su Lun sneered. The Purple Dragon Halberd struck like a viper! It pierced the Necromancer’s skull instantly.

“You…” The Necromancer stared at Su Lun, disbelief in his fear-wide eyes. The light in them faded rapidly. Dying, he hadn’t imagined Su Lun would be so decisive. Shouldn’t he demand service, or torture him for secrets? Why didn’t he follow the script?!

The Necromancer’s body slackened and collapsed. His left hand, hidden beneath his robes, fell open limply. A small black bead rolled out.

It cracked instantly. The Necromancer’s body rapidly blackened, rotting! Flesh melted grotesquely. A nauseating stench arose. In barely ten seconds, only a few crumbling bones remained where he fell.

“Holy crap! What kind of poison is that?!” Witnessing his end, a chill ran through Su Lun. Though confident in his physique, the poison’s sheer potency was terrifying. Touching that stuff… death, or a life unrecognizably scarred.

Thankfully, he hadn’t gloated or bantered like some clichéd villain! That would have ended badly.

Strangely, the poison seemed to only affect flesh and blood. The Necromancer’s robes remained undamaged. Su Lun nudged the robe aside with the Purple Dragon Halberd. Clink! Clink! Clink! Three rings slid out. Seeing them, Su Lun’s eyes lit up. He’d watched the Necromancer use them clearly. These were Magic Items.

Su Lun picked them up casually, checking. They were undamaged. Each ring held a gem of distinct, high quality. The spells within were exhausted—recharging was needed.

Among Magic Items, jewelry like rings commanded higher prices due to crafting difficulty. Based on the Necromancer’s moves: two rings contained defensive spells. The third had unleashed that Soul Shock.

He’d weathered the Soul Shock thanks to his Iron Will talent. An average man might have let the Necromancer turn the tables.
