Chapter 214: Capturing the Gray Dwarves
Chapter 214: Capturing the Gray Dwarves
The Wizard’s Eye kept watching the entire Gray Dwarf city from high above. The army of Zhenbei City moved slowly but firmly toward the Gray Dwarf city under the help of Group Invisibility.
The land outside the city was flat. Many places grew edible fungi, which were the main food source in the underground world. An underground river flowed through the middle of the city.
The Zhenbei City army moved very carefully. A thousand people moving together, even with Invisibility, would leave traces if they were not careful. After all, it only made them invisible. Things like smells and footprints would still remain unless spells like erasing tracks were used.
The sound of the flowing river covered the noise of Su Lun and his team moving forward. After more than an hour, Su Lun led the Zhenbei City army quietly to the edge of the Gray Dwarf city. The Gray Dwarf city was originally carved out of a rock wall. Later, it was repaired and built using many rocks, making it extremely strong.
Trying to capture this city by ordinary means was impossible without at least ten times the number of soldiers and heavy casualties. But for Su Lun, capturing it was not without a way.
Although the Gray Dwarf city walls were high, for Su Lun, they were almost the same as flat ground. Several Gray Dwarf soldiers hid in a sheltered spot on the wall, half asleep. Su Lun placed his hand on the rock, ready to use the Turn Stone to Mud spell to break a big hole in the city wall.
“Wait.” Heatherway suddenly grabbed Su Lun’s hand and said.
“Is there a problem?” Su Lun felt a stir in his heart and said.
“Yes.” Heatherway nodded, then stepped forward and gently felt the wall for a moment.
“This city wall was built using Obsidian. Also, elemental Rune Arrays were carved into it. The whole wall is connected as one.” Heatherway said with a frown. “Because of the elemental Rune Arrays, it’s very hard to use Turn Stone to Mud to open a gap in the wall. Moreover, as soon as a spell is used on the wall, the Rune Array will send a message right away.”
“It seems we can’t enter here silently.” Su Lun muttered quietly. Then he waved to Carina. “There are several Gray Dwarf guards inside. Let’s attack them together, then open the city gate.”
After saying that, the three of them discussed briefly. Then, with the help of the Fly spell, they successfully flew onto the city wall. Because the Gray Dwarves had no war during this time, their guards were very lax. Only two sentries were hiding in a sheltered spot, drinking and being lazy. A few other sentries were hiding in a nearby room.
“Dizziness Spell!” 2
Heatherway snapped her fingers lightly. Two flashes of light appeared and vanished. The two Gray Dwarves hiding in the sheltered spot didn’t even make a sound. Their eyes rolled back and they were about to fall. Su Lun quickly reached out to support them, then gently leaned them against the base of the wall. After that, he waved to the other two. Carina and Heatherway together dealt with the remaining Gray Dwarves in the small room.
“Dizziness Spell!”
“Control Humanoid!”
Several flashes of light passed. The sentries resting in the room either fainted or were controlled by the spells.
Su Lun walked into the room. The room smelled of sweat and strong alcohol. For the Gray Dwarves who loved alcohol, even while on duty they had to drink a few cups. Besides some leftover food, the room had many alcohol bottles. Su Lun casually searched the several people for the key to open the city gate. Soon, he found a small bag on one strong-built Gray Dwarf.
The bag contained a key, two Rubies, and a book. Su Lun flipped through it; it was actually a diary. Did this Gray Dwarf have the habit of writing a diary?
Su Lun skimmed through it. Most of it recorded the daily life of a Gray Dwarf Soldier. However, this diary also revealed some information. For example, this Gray Dwarf city had a population of about a thousand.
Moreover, from the diary, Su Lun also found out who the King of the Gray Dwarves in this city was. He also found some better things.
“King Thorne is too stingy. We dug up a Ruby the size of a fist from underground, and he only gave me twenty gold coins and ten barrels of alcohol as a reward. He is far worse than his father Thoresis. If we had known, we shouldn’t have supported him to become King…”
“It seems our Gray Dwarf King is not loved by his people.” Su Lun shrugged, then put the diary back.
“Carina, make him use the key to open the city gate.”
“As you command, my lord.” Carina said gracefully, then snapped her fingers. The Gray Dwarf controlled by her Control Humanoid spell walked over with a blank stare, picked up the key, then went down the city tower.
With the key, the Gray Dwarf city gate was easily opened. The heavy gate made a loud noise when opening, which surely alerted many people. But now it didn’t matter anymore. Su Lun’s army had already entered the city. Three lanes pushing towers near the high ground, flying dragon riding face, how could they lose?
As the city gate opened, the first to enter were the Barbarians and Drow Elves. Half of the Centaurs stayed outside the city, while the rest followed in. The movement of the large-scale army immediately woke up more Gray Dwarves. Many Gray Dwarves didn’t even have time to put on their armor and came out carrying their weapons.
Su Lun rode his tall Black-maned Horse and took the lead. It must be said, this city built by the Gray Dwarves was very grand and spectacular. The city streets were ten meters wide, all paved with stone slabs. In the center of the city stood a majestic building, which was the palace of this Dwarf Kingdom.
This building was at least twenty meters tall. At the top was a bright Magic Lamp. Although the whole palace didn’t look very ornate, it was magnificent and imposing, full of dignity. Next to the palace was a Temple dedicated to the Gray Dwarf gods. Straight, wide streets, neat stone houses, and simple, practical stone stairs were everywhere, filled with Dwarf architectural style.
Before entering the city, Su Lun had already checked the layout of the Gray Dwarf city buildings through the Wizard’s Eye. The leading Drow Elves also knew it clearly. So after entering the city, they immediately started carrying out the pre-planned strategy. Su Lun took one group to attack the palace and the Temple.
The other Zhenbei City troops guarded the intersections of all the streets, splitting up all the Gray Dwarves, then slowly eliminating or capturing them. According to Su Lun’s intention, they should try to reduce killing as much as possible. Gray Dwarves were completely different from those Gnolls, Bugbears, Orcs, and the like.
Those Gnolls and Orcs could basically only do hard labor or be sold to arenas for money. But Gray Dwarves were different. They had superb forging skills and were also mining masters. Their combat skills were quite good too. They were much more valuable than those Gnolls and Orcs. So they should reduce casualties as much as possible.
The Gray Dwarves had no preparation at all for tonight’s surprise attack. Plus, the city gate was captured, so many people were panicked. Facing those powerful races like Barbarians, Drow Elves, and Centaurs, the Gray Dwarves had no advantage at all. Soon, they were completely defeated by the Zhenbei City Warriors.
They couldn’t win in a fight. When they tried to flee, they found their short legs couldn’t outrun the Barbarians’ and Drow Elves’ long legs, not to mention the four-legged Centaurs on the side. Seeing no hope of escape, and desperate resistance was directly beaten back, many Gray Dwarves could only choose to surrender. These cunning, sneaky, and selfish Gray Dwarves had no thought of facing death bravely.
Su Lun rode the Black-maned Horse and led the army charging toward the palace. Heatherway and Carina followed closely behind. All the Gray Dwarves they met on the way were directly knocked flying by Su Lun’s halberd and then fainted. With Su Lun’s current Legendary Tier strength, no one here could withstand a single blow.
They sped all the way and charged to the front of the palace. Only then did Su Lun encounter some decent resistance. Fifty Dwarf Defenders in heavy armor, holding axe-hammers, had already formed up and blocked the front of the palace. The leader, a Dwarf in golden armor with a ram-horn helmet, held an axe-hammer and looked angrily at Su Lun.
“Human, you are now attacking the city of Dwarf King Thorne! If you retreat now, I can pretend nothing happened!” the heavy-armored Dwarf said loudly.
“The whole city is about to be taken by me. I advise you to surrender quickly. I can guarantee your safety.” Su Lun said with a light laugh.
“Never! The people of Dugal fear nothing!”
“Really?” Su Lun didn’t waste more words and directly waved his hand. “Attack!”
The Barbarians and Centaurs behind him immediately threw their Hand Axes and Throwing Spears. At such close range, the Throwing Spears and Hand Axes were very powerful. Even though the Dwarf armor was tough, it was dented by the impact. Some unlucky ones were hit by Throwing Spears through the gaps in their helmets and were instantly killed.
Some were not injured, but were knocked back two steps by the great force carried by the Throwing Spears and Hand Axes. The originally neat formation instantly became messy.
Su Lun took the lead and charged forward directly. His Purple Dragon Halberd was surrounded by dazzling lightning. When he reached the front of the formation, he swept with the Purple Dragon Halberd. The three Dwarf Soldiers in the front row were sent flying backward, and their bodies were wrapped in lightning energy. Although the metal armor had good defense, it had almost no defense against lightning power. Any enemy touched by Su Lun’s Purple Dragon Halberd lost their fighting ability.
Seeing Su Lun dominating in the formation, the leading Dwarf roared in anger, waved his axe-hammer, and charged forward. But this Dwarf was very sly. He did not attack Su Lun. Instead, he swung his axe at the Black-maned Horse’s hind leg. If it hit, even though the Black-maned Horse was from the System, it would be finished.
At the critical moment, Su Lun squeezed the horse’s belly. The Black-maned Horse instantly kicked backward, just dodging the Dwarf’s attack, and one hoof kicked him in the chest, sending him flying far away.
