Chapter 165: Destruction (Part One)

After several fierce volleys, the longbowmen could not shoot arrows for the time being. Only some Drow Elves and strong archers could still shoot, but their arrows were much sparser than before.

The Orc Alliance finally crashed into the spear formation. The spearmen, who had been waiting ready, merged their tower shields directly into a ‘shield wall’. The spearmen behind constantly thrust their long spears through the gaps. One spear after another shot out like poisonous fangs. Many Gnolls and Hobgoblins didn’t have time to dodge. Their bodies were pierced by the spears, gushing blood, and fell to the ground.

Under the influence of the Bloodthirsty Curse, the Orc Alliance knew no fear. Each warrior charged forward fearlessly, only to be ruthlessly stabbed to death by the spearmen. A river of blood soon flowed before the spear formation. The ground, frozen hard as rock, was quickly stained red with blood. The warm blood soon turned the ground muddy.

The spear formation fought while retreating. The rested longbowman unit struck again. At such close range, the arrows were terrifyingly powerful. The area in front of the spear formation was engulfed in a rain of arrows. Countless monsters were hit by arrows and fell in large numbers.

For a while, pressure on the spear formation lessened significantly. After a time of fierce fighting, the front of the spear formation was piled high with corpses. Many Gnolls even tried to climb over the bodies to breach the shield wall. Sadly, they ended up being riddled with arrows like porcupines by the longbowmen.

Seizing the moment when the rain of arrows cleared the monsters before the front line, the spear formation retreated ten steps up the hill behind them and halted again. The longbowmen stopped shooting. More of the Orc Alliance surged forward. The spearmen, acting on instincts honed through countless drills, began harvesting the monsters’ lives once more.

“ROAR!”

Accompanied by furious bellows, the Orcs surged forward like a tide. These green-skinned monsters were far stronger than Hobgoblins, Bugbears, and Gnolls. Their very appearance increased the pressure on the formation immensely. The whole battlefield had turned into a bloody meat grinder. The Vrock on the battlefield still charged and slew, but its body now bore many wounds. Two of the other four Demons had died; the remaining two were also seriously injured.

Primitive, savage, and brutal. The Orcs smashed through one tower shield and surged into the gap. Reserve shield-bearers rushed forward to fill the breach immediately. Spearmen beside them provided instant support.

Chris flew up into the sky. She flicked her small whip. A strange energy rippled out from her. The fiercely attacking green Orcs suddenly stopped moving. Even their gaze became momentarily vacant and dull. Yet, the next second, clarity returned. However, the recovered Orcs didn’t attack the spear formation. Instead, they turned their weapons on their comrades.

Over a dozen Orcs were slain by their own companions in that moment. Those Orcs showed no hesitation. After killing their comrades, they turned and attacked their other fellows. The battlefield immediately became even more chaotic.

Seeing others act, Carina also drew her staff. One orange fireball after another shimmered into existence before her. Carina gave a gentle wave of her slender hand. Five fireballs soared towards the densest part of the Orc Alliance.

“Chain Fireballs!”

“BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!”

The five fireballs landed among the Orc Alliance. Explosions roared in quick succession. The raging fire elemental energy burned the surrounding Orcs directly into chunks of charco. Many nearby Gnolls had their thick fur ignited by the sparks. A huge number of monsters died instantly.

“ROOOOAR!”

A wild, furious bellow sounded. A powerfully built Orc clad in heavy armor suddenly charged forward. This Orc was far stronger than those around him. Standing over seven feet tall, he was an imposing figure. He swung his battle-axe down heavily. Three tower shields blocking his path were smashed apart. With one jump, he tried to breach the shield wall.

“Lightning Spear!”

A flash of lightning erupted. A javelin formed of pure lightning energy slammed into his chest. The Orc Warrior convulsed as if struck by real lightning. Crackling sparks exploded out from all over his body. An enormous, bowl-sized wound appeared on his chest. He crashed to the ground.

Having dealt with this Orc Warrior, Su Lun charged down the hillside. The Purple Dragon Halberd appeared in his hand. Lightning sparked over his entire body.

“Thunder Lightning Spear!”

Powerful lightning energy erupted from him instantly. Blue arcs of lightning danced over him continuously, making him look like the Thunder God from legends.

The Shaman positioned further back saw the battle reach a stalemate. He raised his bone staff once more. His face, already pale from casting magic, looked even worse now. Casting that massive group buff on over a thousand warriors had drained him severely. Yet, instead of smashing through effortlessly as planned, the battle had become a quagmire. He had to cast again.

The Orc Shaman pulled out a pitch-black bottle from his robes. A fierce glint flashed in his eyes. He swallowed its contents in one gulp. Soon, a faint flush appeared on his ghastly pale face. A violent energy surged through his body. Moments later, sweat poured from his skin.

Taking several deep breaths, the Shaman began to chant, waving his staff. A voice filled with a primal, untamed quality sounded from him. Though not loud, it carried tremendous force. As his chant grew faster and faster, a wild energy gathered around him.

Then, a resonant roar echoed. Giant wolves seemed to materialize directly from thin air onto the battlefield.

“Spectral Wolf Pack!”

After casting the spell, this Priest’s robust body suddenly shriveled. His flushed face rapidly aged. Deep wrinkles crept across his face instantly. His body weakened and swayed precariously, as if a breath of wind could knock him down. Seeing this, two Orc warriors nearby rushed to support him.

Over a dozen spectral wolves, towering seven feet tall and ten feet long, appeared on the battlefield. These spectral wolves moved with blinding speed. The moment they materialized, they charged the spear formation. These shadowy giants effortlessly cleared the shield wall. They plunged right into the center of the spear ranks. Razor-sharp claws slashed out. Armor tore like paper on several spearmen. Deep, terrible wounds appeared on their bodies. Spearmen fell, casualties mounting swiftly.

Seizing this opportunity, the Orcs prepared to charge en masse and rip the spear formation apart. But before they could move, a flash of lightning seared their eyes.

That ball of lightning was so intensely bright it dominated the entire battlefield. It instantly stabbed into the soldiers’ eyes. Then came a sharp cracking sound, like something breaking. Intense pain shot through them. The next moment, darkness engulfed them.

Su Lun’s agile figure appeared right before the formation. His Purple Dragon Halberd swung horizontally. Its blade wreathed in lightning passed through a warrior’s neck. The cold crescent blade sliced through skin. A head soared into the air. The Orc warrior’s body froze mid-motion.

Thump. A head tumbled down. The headless stone statue of the warrior slumped heavily to the ground. Foul blood gushed forth. Su Lun didn’t pause. The next instant, he stood beside a spectral wolf that had charged deep into the spear formation and was killing freely. This half-corporeal, half-energy monster was incredibly alert.

Because of their unique nature, they resisted most physical attacks. Their supernatural agility granted speed beyond measure. Dealing with the spearmen was as easy as a tiger amid sheep. Su Lun didn’t want his spearmen dying in droves. After dispatching several Orc warriors, he targeted these spectral wolves first.

Their pride, speed, meant nothing before Su Lun. Their damage resistance seemed ineffective against him. Lightning energy inherently caused extra harm to creatures of negative energy. With lightning flashing, his Purple Dragon Halberd, wrapped in crackling bolts, struck a spectral wolf.

Its partially materialized form was instantly enveloped in electric light. The halberd severed it cleanly at the waist. Su Lun’s figure never stopped, flickering continuously through the spear formation, almost seeming like multiple versions of him were attacking at once.

The spectral wolves that had been dominating mere moments ago suddenly became like lambs led to slaughter. They were immediately decimated. Seeing the tide turn, the remaining spectral wolves tried to flee. Su Lun wouldn’t let the creatures that killed so many of his soldiers escape. He raised his left hand. A javelin formed entirely of lightning materialized in his grasp.

“Lightning Spear!”

A lightning bolt flashed. The fleeing spectral wolf was pierced through in an instant. A blast of violent electric energy enveloped it completely. Seconds later, the spectral wolf was reduced to a lump of smoldering charco. Simultaneously, bolts of lightning struck the other fleeing spectral wolves.

At that moment, every eye on the battlefield was drawn to this figure, glowing like the God of Thunder. The human soldiers struggling valiantly saw him and their morale soared!

“CRUSH THE ENEMY!”

“CRUSH THE ENEMY!”

“CRUSH THE ENEMY!”

A roar erupted from the human ranks. It felt as if their exhaustion vanished in an instant. Tattered sections of the battle line were instantly reinforced. They beat back the enemy assault with sheer force.

ROAR!

Mad bellows erupted again.

Wave after wave of Orc warriors charged anew. With nowhere to retreat, the Orcs became utterly berserk. These greenskins had fixed their attention on Su Lun. They desperately fought to reach him and kill him. They had chosen the wrong opponent.

“Hah! Even better!”

Seeing the horde rushing at him, Su Lun couldn’t help but give a cold, mocking smile. His Purple Dragon Halberd spun, tracing a complex pattern, then swept out horizontally. It took the leading Orc warrior’s head clean off.

Foul blood sprayed ten feet into the air. The massive headless corpse thudded to the ground. Their comrade’s death didn’t make the Orcs feel any fear. On the contrary, it filled them with greater fury. Their eyes burned with pure hatred as they looked at Su Lun.

Su Lun lightly touched the ground with his toes. His body instantly shot upwards and forward. He became a streak of dazzling lightning. The Purple Dragon Halberd trailed arcs of electric energy. Countless strands of lightning coiled around him. He flashed straight through the heart of the Orc ranks. His form flickered above them. Lightning bolts lanced downwards. Blood splattered everywhere. Behind him came the thud-thud-thud of bodies hitting the ground. Corpse after corpse of headless Orcs fell.
