Chapter 4: Sacrifice the Small Self, Achieve the Greater Self!
The inside of the Soul Pet Base was very large.
It was divided into several areas.
The sales area, the War Zone, the Soul Pet Recovery Center, the research area, the exhibition area, and so on.
It had six floors in total.
The first five floors were open to the public, while the top floor was the administration area of the base, not open to the public.
Among the major areas, the one with the most people wasn’t the sales area.
It was the War Zone.
“The War Zone on the third floor really has a lot of people.” Xu Haifeng looked up, his eyes burning as he gazed at the War Zone on the second floor. “For us, it’s not far off now.”
Battling was one of the hottest topics among Soul Pact Masters nowadays.
For high school students who had just started raising Soul Pets and hadn’t even awakened their Martial Souls yet.
It really wasn’t far off.
Wang Che took one look and then turned his gaze away.
Right now, he was more interested in other unknown information about this world.
The sales area.
Inside, there were rows upon rows of Soul Pet Eggs.
These pet eggs all had labels, clearly stating what type of juvenile Soul Pet Egg they were.
Along with the detailed price.
They usually started at ten thousand yuan, and the purchasing power of ten thousand yuan here was similar to that of the Chinese Renminbi in the early 21st century on Little Blue Planet.
It was expensive, but not unaffordable.
“The Soul Pet Eggs here at the Soul Beast Base are all bred by professional Soul Beast breeders who carefully tend to various Soul Beasts. Even if the Soul Pet Eggs look very similar, we can clearly distinguish the types of these juvenile Soul Pet Eggs.”
“The free Soul Pet Eggs distributed by the Federation are mostly the same. For you, even your teachers would find it difficult to identify in detail what kind of Soul Beast will hatch from them…”
“Especially the eggs laid by species-type Soul Beasts are all very similar. It’s hard to tell them apart just by their outer appearance, size, or surface patterns.”
“If an unknown special Soul Pet Egg is discovered, various advanced instruments are needed to detect the life fluctuations inside the egg to make an inference. That is one of our research projects at the Soul Pet Base.”
“In our research exhibition area, there are currently as many as ten unknown Soul Pet Eggs that we haven’t fully researched yet. You can go take a look later.”
From ahead came an old yet hearty voice.
Wang Che followed the sound and saw an old man, about sixty or seventy years old, wearing a white research coat.
The old man had snow-white hair, but his face was full of energy, his eyes were bright and sharp, and he wore a pair of glasses as he explained with a smile to the dozen or so students beside him.
“That is Professor Yan,” Xu Haifeng said. “Doesn’t he look quite young? Around sixty or seventy? Actually, he is nearly one hundred and twenty years old. He is also a Soul Pact Master, but he mainly works in scientific research; he is a research-type Soul Pact Master.”
“Very young indeed.” Wang Che could sense that this old man’s life force was still very vigorous.
He couldn’t practice Cultivation now, couldn’t draw Qi into his body to temper his whole body, and Divine Sense was still far off.
But he still had the basic perception and intuition of a great cultivator of the Ascension Realm.
He was extremely sensitive to the fluctuations of the world’s energy.
He might not be able to perceive the details, but this old man was clearly extraordinary. Even if it wasn’t Wang Che, any ordinary person would subconsciously feel that he was not simple, exuding a special aura.
“I say, you guys didn’t wait for us.” Xu Haifeng walked over and greeted a few of them with a smile. “Wang Che is here.”
The dozen or so students turned around and looked at the two, especially at the Green Caterpillar poking its head out of Wang Che’s chest pocket.
Their expressions were varied for a moment.
Some shared the same misfortune, holding a juvenile Soul Pet in their arms.
Some smiled in welcome, some remained silent, some giggled carelessly, and others were extremely excited…
“Brother Che, as a top student, I didn’t expect your luck to be even worse than mine. As an ugly guy, I feel balanced now.”
“See? So handsome, right? Traded for with luck.”
“Starting with a Green Caterpillar, nice one, Brother Che. Out of the twenty-eight students in our class who chose the free Soul Beast egg, even the most ordinary one hatched was a Koi with a Racial Potential of one hundred and ten. Your Green Caterpillar has a Racial Potential under one hundred; that’s not simple.”
“According to current online statistics, the probability of hatching a juvenile Rare Soul Pet with a Racial Potential over two hundred from the ordinary Soul Pet Eggs distributed by the Federation is 4%. The probability of getting a Soul Pet with a Racial Potential below one hundred is 5%.”
“Rounding it off, your luck is equivalent to getting a Rare Soul Pet.”
…
The dozen or so classmates all joked and greeted him one after another.
They all greeted him with laughter, but behind their smiles, there wasn’t much mockery, mostly teasing.
And within that teasing, there was also a bit of shared hardship and sighing.
Mainly because Wang Che, with his peerless looks and excellent grades, was very popular at school.
Now, hatching a Green Caterpillar as his first Soul Pet was just too shocking.
During the winter break of their third year of high school, students basically had to sign the Life Soul Pact and hatch their first Soul Pet Egg.
This was to prepare for the Martial Soul awakening half a year later.
Now, with most of the winter break gone, the students who had chosen the free Soul Pet Eggs had mostly already hatched their first Soul Pet.
Wang Che smiled. Communicating with such young children gave him an illusion of returning to the days when he first set foot on the path of Cultivation.
“Actually, it’s not bad. According to the probability floor theory, with me having the worst luck as the floor, the other twenty-eight students are bound to hatch good Soul Pets.” Wang Che shifted his mindset and declared righteously, “Sacrifice the small self, achieve the greater self!”
Having lived for tens of thousands of years as a great cultivator of the Ascension Realm, his control over everything about himself was extremely powerful.
Not to mention, during his travels through the universe, Wang Che had integrated into the civilizations of many life forms.
Even many non-human creatures; Wang Che could easily blend in with them.
A mere group of students was naturally no problem.
The others were slightly taken aback by his words and fell silent.
“Damn!” Xu Haifeng laughed and punched Wang Che playfully. “To be able to act so smoothly and deceive our feelings at a time like this, it’s really you.”
“I was actually a little moved!”
“Brother Che, if you don’t mind the gender, I’m available…”
“Ah, Brother Che, I regret not being born a girl…”
“…”
Amidst the group’s laughter, Professor Yan looked at Wang Che. Hearing the children’s banter, he also smiled:
“You must be Wang Che? Good mentality. If you can’t awaken a Martial Soul in the future, come to my Soul Beast Base.”
Everyone was somewhat surprised upon hearing this.
This was an offer.
And not a simple one. The benefits at such a Soul Beast Base were unusually good.
Ordinary people couldn’t get in.
Even for Soul Pact Masters, there were requirements.
It wasn’t normal for a professor to extend an offer like this upon first meeting.
But Wang Che shook his head and said, “Professor Yan, I observed when I came in that most of the researchers inside this base are women. With this offer, aren’t you just trying to recruit me to ease the pressure of having too many women and too few men in your base? I won’t do that.”
Professor Yan was first stunned, then let out a loud laugh and said:
“Not bad, young man. I didn’t expect you to figure out my intention.”
The other students, hearing his tone, immediately understood; it had been a joke all along.
Xu Haifeng, standing to the side, however, shook his head slightly to himself.
He felt that Professor Yan was serious, but Wang Che cleverly deflected it with a few words.
‘This guy, still so quick-witted and smart…’ Xu Haifeng thought to himself.
He actually knew that it was probably that person who asked Professor Yan to say that.
The purpose was simple: to give Wang Che a good future path.
