Chapter 19: Faded Rouge (to the tune of “Green Jade Table”)

Gu Fengchen knew the situation was critical. He chose a road heading north and galloped away at full speed. As he ran, several horses galloped past on the road ahead. The riders were agile and clearly not mediocre fighters. Gu Fengchen lowered his head and whipped his horse past them. At first, the men didn’t notice, but as Gu Fengchen’s horse passed theirs, suddenly one of them shouted, “It’s him!”The others looked over at his cry, but Gu Fengchen had already leaped his horse past them. The men called out, “Hey, fellow! Stop right there!” Gu Fengchen had no intention of listening and kept whipping his horse hard. Seeing this, the burly men exchanged glances and nodded. “It really is him!”One of them took a signal flare from his robe and shot it into the sky. He fired three in succession, then spurred his horse and gave chase closely.

Gu Fengchen had two horses and could ride them alternately, so the pursuers couldn’t catch up to him immediately. But after running for a while, another group of people emerged ahead. Someone shouted, “That’s the one! Cut him off…” Seeing Gu Fengchen’s horse was fast, these men pulled out hidden weapons and shot them at him. The whooshing sounds rose instantly, the hidden weapons flying as thick as heavy rain or hail. Gu Fengchen had no choice. With a light tap of his toes, he leaped from his horse, dodging the projectiles. But the two horses were almost riddled like sieves, letting out tragic whinnies as they fell to the ground.

Before Gu Fengchen even landed, more hidden weapons shot toward him. He took a long breath, twisted his body in mid-air, and with a whoosh, plunged into the wild woods by the roadside.

This group naturally wouldn’t let him go; they all shouted and chased after him.

Gu Fengchen abandoned the horses, only carrying a bundle with dried rations and wine on his back. Hoping to quickly shake off his pursuers, he deliberately chose desolate, small paths and soon entered the mountains. It wasn’t that he feared these people; he simply didn’t want to be entangled by them. So he raced swiftly along the uneven valley floor. After running for a while, the power of the Heaven-Defying Divine Art began to manifest. He ran faster and faster, now barely touching the ground, leaping two or three zhang at a time with just a tap of his toes. After rounding several mountain valleys, he finally lost sight of his pursuers.

Sitting down for a short rest, Gu Fengchen took out some dried meat and wine, ate a little, and set off again. As he travelled north, he could occasionally hear the whistle of distant signal flares, though the sounds grew fainter and fainter. He ran straight through the day until the red sun rose high the next morning. By then, Gu Fengchen had already left Langya Mountain. He understood the area was still highly dangerous and not a place to linger. So he found a market town, bought a horse, and purchased a bamboo hat. He lowered the hat’s brim, covered with black gauze, to shield his face and avoid recognition.

Continuing northward, he indeed encountered several more groups of people along the way. But these people were solely focused on their own journey and didn’t recognize him. Gu Fengchen felt slightly reassured.

That evening, as twilight approached, Gu Fengchen spotted a large, abandoned mansion in the wilderness and decided to rest there. Throughout his journey, he had often seen such deserted houses by the roadside or in wild fields, all empty, overrun with wild grass. He didn’t know the root cause. Actually, the region had suffered several consecutive years of severe drought. Official relief efforts had been ineffective, leading entire villages to flee as famine refugees. Unknown numbers had died along the way or in flight. Hence, such desolate dwellings were everywhere, truly like ghost towns. Once night fell, there would only be the lonely cloth-flaps rustling, sands swirling in the wind, tree spirits and mountain ghosts, wild rats and city foxes; cries and howls filled the place, extremely frightening.

Gu Fengchen entered the house, closing the wooden door that let wind whistle through its gaps. Raising his head, he saw the house had two levels, connected by a staircase, clearly once belonging to a wealthy family. But now it was ruined beyond recognition. The floor was covered with wild grass, cobwebs and dust hung everywhere, broken tables and chairs lay toppled in disarray. Only the centerpiece scroll hung on the wall in the main room was faintly visible, inscribed with four large characters: “Double Blessings of Luck and Longevity”.Gu Fengchen chuckled wryly to himself, muttering, “Speak of ‘Double Blessings of Luck and Longevity’? If it were changed to ‘Double Lacks of Luck and Longevity’, that would be more fitting.”

With that, he went out into the courtyard, collected some broken wooden planks, and snapped some dry branches. Then he started a fire inside the house.By now, the sky was slowly darkening. The blaze burning fiercely inside the house dispelled some of the desolate cold. The weather was still hot, so he didn’t need the fire for warmth; it was just to scare off wild beasts. Having run all day, Gu Fengchen felt slightly weary. He pulled up some grass to make bedding, settled down on it, took some food from his bundle, and drank wine, nibbling on dried meat to go with it. He drank half a gourd of cold wine and felt a little drowsy. After adding some wood to the fire, he was about to close his eyes and sleep when he suddenly heard movement outside the door.

Gu Fengchen was in dire straits himself; his hearing was especially sharp and his reactions swift. Instantly, he leaped up and hid beside the door. He quietly concentrated his internal energy into his hands, preparing to strike.

Sure enough, someone slowly pushed the wooden door open and tiptoed stealthily into the room. Gu Fengchen struck like lightning. One hand grasped the person’s throat instantly. Then he pulled the door shut behind them and yanked the intruder in front of him.

The person was caught completely off guard. They didn’t even have time to grunt; Gu Fengchen nearly choked the breath out of them. Their hands instinctively flailed weakly against Gu Fengchen’s arms.Gu Fengchen looked at them by the firelight and froze in surprise. He saw he was holding a woman, roughly twenty years old, with stunningly beautiful features. She wore very ornate clothes, now ripped in multiple places. Her hair was disheveled, and her face showed scratches and bruises. She looked utterly disheveled.

No matter how he looked at her, this woman seemed nothing like someone sent to kill him. She looked far more like the one being chased.

Even so, Gu Fengchen didn’t release her. He merely loosened his fingers slightly and asked in a low, fierce tone, “Who are you?” As his grip slackened, the woman could finally speak: “Please… don’t send me back… I’d rather die than go back…”

Gu Fengchen asked, “Send you back? Back where? You’re not here to kill me?”The woman’s face flushed. “Kill you?… I’m barely escaping myself…” Seeing she didn’t seem to be lying, Gu Fengchen released his fingers and let her go. The woman inhaled deeply, then stumbled and collapsed onto the pile of grass, gasping for breath.

Gu Fengchen saw she had taken his grass bedding but said nothing. He found a plank of wood, tossed it near the fire, and sat on it. When he moved, the woman hurriedly pulled her clothing tighter, covering her exposed white neck.

Neither looked at the other. They sat on opposite sides of the fire. After a while, Gu Fengchen heard the woman’s stomach rumble loudly a few times. He asked, “You’re hungry, aren’t you? I have some food here.” He threw his bundle onto the pile of grass where she sat.

Instead of gratitude, the woman glared at him with wide eyes and said indignantly, “Don’t think you can make me eat your food! I know. You drugged it! You’re trying to make me faint, and then…” Her face flushed, and she didn’t finish the sentence, but her meaning was perfectly clear.

Gu Fengchen gave a wry laugh. “Suit yourself then.” He stopped paying attention to her, closed his eyes, and prepared to sleep.

After a while, the woman, seeing Gu Fengchen had no ill intentions, quietly opened the bundle and started stuffing food into her mouth. She ate for a moment, then looked up in surprise to find Gu Fengchen sitting up, watching her.

The woman hastily threw down the dry rations and tightly hugged herself, fearing Gu Fengchen might pounce on her.

Gu Fengchen did not get up, only asking, “Young lady, why are you running away? Who’s chasing you?” The woman was eager for him to speak, hoping it would distract him from improper thoughts. She replied, “I’m fleeing from an arranged marriage. My father wants to marry me off to someone I dislike. I refused and ran away.” Gu Fengchen responded, “Oh? So your family is chasing you?”

The woman said, “No, it’s my husband’s family. I… I escaped on my wedding night!” Gu Fengchen sighed deeply. “So you, too, are caught in a bind.” The woman inquired, “Then… are you also running from marriage?”

At this, both laughed. Gu Fengchen said, “I’m not running from marriage—I’m running for my life.” The woman remarked, “You were so quick earlier! I hardly saw anything before you nearly choked me to death. Your martial skills must be incredible.”

Gu Fengchen replied, “No matter how skilled one is, there are times when you can’t defeat your foes. Running becomes necessary.” The woman agreed, “That’s true. My husband is also extraordinarily skilled in martial arts, but he’s a terrible person. I refused to be his wife and fled. Now he’s utterly humiliated. If caught, I’d surely be beaten to death.” Gu Fengchen noted, “It seems you’ve run quite far.”

The woman said, “Almost a hundred miles, I reckon. I doubt they’ll catch up.” Gu Fengchen sneered, “This was never about fleeing marriage. You came for me.” Startled, she asked, “For you?” Gu Fengchen stated coldly, “You came to kill me. I understand perfectly.” The woman shrugged her shoulders, muttering, “Ridiculous…”

Gu Fengchen pressed, “There’s no settlement within a hundred miles. Where did you flee from?” The woman retorted coolly, “No need to tell you.” As Gu Fengchen rose to interrogate her, his gaze suddenly sharpened, snapping toward the door. He had heard footsteps just yards away.

Two men approached, their lightness skills exceptional. Only Gu Fengchen’s mastery of the Heaven-Defying Divine Art allowed him to perceive their near-silent tread. Instantly freezing, he assumed a Reclining Buddha posture—one hand supporting his head, the other resting at his waist—ready to spring up at any moment.

Bang! The wooden door was kicked open as two men stormed in.

The woman shrieked, shrinking back into the corner.

The intruders were vicious-looking men, one tall and one short. Spotting the woman, the tall one sneered, “The bride is hard to find! Hiding here all along.”

The short one glanced at Gu Fengchen and snorted, “No wonder she fled—eloping with her lover.”

Gu Fengchen’s fury flared at their insolence, but he forced himself to feign indifference, deciding against intervening.

Seeing his silence, the tall man scoffed, “Spineless coward!” He then strode toward the woman and grabbed her. She raised her hands to strike, but he effortlessly seized her wrist and yanked her outward.

The short man taunted, “Drag her back, and let the master break her legs! See if she’ll run then!”

They acted as though Gu Fengchen were invisible, utterly dismissing him.

The woman struggled desperately against the two men, screaming at Gu Fengchen to save her. Though reluctant to interfere, the injustice of it all stirred his anger. His chest heaved as he restrained himself. Seeing him unmoved, the woman seemed to accept her fate. She ceased her cries as they dragged her toward the door.

As she was pulled out, she glanced back, her eyes locking with Gu Fengchen’s. They held a profound, bottomless sorrow.

Gu Fengchen’s heart clenched as if struck by lightning.

That sorrow in her gaze mirrored Ling Ling’s exactly when he had stabbed her years before.

Gu Fengchen instantly sprang up. In a single fluid motion, he swayed his figure to block the three at the doorway.

The short man jeered, “What? Playing the hero rescuing…”

Before he could finish, Gu Fengchen’s palm struck. Both men raised their hands to block. Boom! Their bodies hurtled backward, slamming into the wall with such force the entire hut shook violently, dust raining from the rafters.

Seething with pent-up rage, Gu Fengchen had struck brutally, without restraint. Neither man could withstand it—arm bones snapped upon impact, and the collision with the wall ruptured their internal organs. Blood gushed from their mouths as they collapsed unconscious.

The woman stood dumbfounded, as if dreaming. Two loud bangs, two sharp exhalations, and suddenly two ferocious brutes lay crumpled like mud. She stared in disbelief.

After dealing with them, Gu Fengchen pulled the woman back inside. “I didn’t wish to save you,” he stated. “I simply couldn’t bear your suffering. My horse is by the door—take it and flee quickly while it’s dark. Others will likely pursue.” He fished out all his silver and pressed it into her hands. “It’s not much. It’s all I have.”

The woman weighed the silver coins in her palm, then suddenly smiled charmingly… and casually let them clatter to the ground. Gu Fengchen frowned. “Is it too little?” She giggled, “No, it’s just… silver isn’t what I want.”

“What do you want then?”

Still smiling, she wrapped her arms around his neck and leaped—locking her legs around his waist—then pressing her face close to his. “I want you…”

Utterly unfamiliar with such brazen passion, Gu Fengchen’s blood raced. He dared not channel his inner power for fear of hurting her. In desperation, he thrust his hands outward against her shoulders. But they were too close… His palms met the soft warmth of her breasts. Horrified, he ripped his hands away immediately. Seizing the chance, she pushed forward, tumbling both onto the hay.

The sweet fragrance filling his nostrils scattered his thoughts. He tried to flip her off but recoiled from touching her again, leaving him utterly vulnerable. She, however, moved with practiced ease. Arms coiled around him, body pressed against his like a serpent. Then came her crimson lips, seeking his face…

Gu Fengchen was extremely anxious and, in that moment, ignored the ancient taboo against physical contact between men and women. He reached out to grip the back of the woman’s neck, forcefully pulling her away from his face. Her neck gripped, her whole body instantly stiffened. Gu Fengchen shook his hand and flung her several feet away.

The woman was very agile; the moment she landed, she immediately rolled back toward him, but Gu Fengchen had already sprung up and retreated a zhang away.

His chest heaved, his face flushed with extreme embarrassment. Seeing that she couldn’t cling to him, the woman lay on the ground, striking a highly seductive pose and giving him a flirtatious glance.

Gu Fengchen secretly regulated his breathing to calm the surge of blood and anger in his heart, shouting in fury, “What are you doing?” The woman arched her curved eyebrows and replied, “Nothing. This hero saved a young woman like me, and I have no way to repay you except to offer myself.” Gu Fengchen spat in disgust, “Your words are far too casual, suggesting that you are… are…”

He couldn’t continue.

The woman picked it up, saying, “Suggesting that I am fickle and promiscuous, is that it?” Gu Fengchen said, “No… not that severe, but… close enough…” The woman burst into laughter, “You are really amusing. I enjoy talking with you.”

Gu Fengchen walked to the door and pulled it open, “Get out now. I want no involvement with you.” The woman did not rise, instead speaking softly, “Are you really chasing me away? If so, I will surely be caught, have my legs broken, maybe even have my tongue cut out, my eyes gouged, my hands chopped off, and be thrown into a pigpen. Please be merciful and don’t drive me out…”

Her voice was sickly sweet, with a soul-enticing allure, but it had little effect on Gu Fengchen. He stared straight at her, “If you don’t leave, I will leave.” With that, he strode out the door.

This finally stirred the woman to action—she jumped up at once and ran out, reaching to grab Gu Fengchen’s hand. Gu Fengchen channeled his inner energy to flick her hand away. She cried out in pain, “Ah! That hurts! Do you have thorns on you?”

Gu Fengchen ignored her and strode straight toward his horse.

The woman stopped speaking now, just standing stunned, watching him. Gu Fengchen untied his horse, mounted it without looking back, jabbed his legs, and the horse galloped away into the boundless night.

The woman didn’t shout or call out; she just stood frozen on the spot, gazing at Gu Fengchen’s receding figure, suddenly shedding two streams of tears. She crouched to the ground, buried her face in the crook of her arm, and sobbed softly.

After a short while, the sound of hoofbeats returned as Gu Fengchen came back. He halted the horse in front of the woman and sighed, “Exactly what do you want?”

The woman lifted her head, her face tear-streaked and pitiful in appearance, saying through sobs, “I want to go home…”

Gu Fengchen smiled faintly, “Why didn’t you say so earlier?” The woman replied, “I was afraid you wouldn’t escort me, so I thought to… first give you some favors, then ask…” Gu Fengchen said, “I was once a monk. Though I didn’t recite well, I still know that rescuing someone in distress is our duty and requires no repayment.”

The woman then wiped away her tears, “You will escort me home?”

Gu Fengchen nodded. The woman said, “But you… seem busy yourself. Won’t I delay your plans?” Gu Fengchen said, “It’s fine. Where would you like to go?” She pointed with her hand, “Kaifeng Prefecture.”

Gu Fengchen said, “Perfect, I am also headed north. Since we are merely going in the same direction, it’s not even assistance. Please mount now.”

The woman asked, “Are we leaving right away?” Gu Fengchen said, “Unless you enjoy being captured.” Hearing that, she hastily scrambled onto the horse behind him.

Gu Fengchen could sense that the woman had some martial skills but was not highly skilled. Her family likely had no true experts. He asked casually, “Who taught you martial arts?” The woman replied, “I learned a bit from my father, but I haven’t improved much. I’m not cut out for martial training.” Gu Fengchen said, “Very well, hold steady…”

The woman reminded him, “There is silver, food, and wine still in the house—are you just leaving it?” Gu Fengchen pointed to the two still-unconscious men, “Leave it for them. I don’t mean to boast, but after taking my palm strike, they’ll need at least ten days to get up. That should be just enough to sustain them.”

With that, he gave the reins a shake and rode away with the woman.

They dared not take the main roads, sticking only to remote paths. The woman was much more restrained now, sitting quietly and not speaking. Gu Fengchen asked her surname; she said Bai, but declined to give her personal name. He didn’t press further.

After traveling dozens of miles, Gu Fengchen found a derelict hut. Without lighting a fire, they slept inside haphazardly for the night.

At daybreak they set off again. Gu Fengchen covered his face with a bamboo hat and walked on foot, while the woman sat on the horse with most of her head and face wrapped in cloth. Moving slowly this way, they attracted no attention. When they encountered a town, the woman produced several gold leaves for Gu Fengchen to exchange for silver coins. He also bought another horse. Gu Fengchen didn’t decline, purchasing dried meat, flatbreads, wine, and other provisions for the long journey as well.

With one horse per person now, they moved much faster. Along the way, they occasionally encountered some Jianghu people. But since Gu Fengchen now had a companion and was masked, they paid him no mind.

Heading northwest for five days, they entered Henan territory and drew ever closer to Kaifeng. That day, they arrived at Shangqiu. Shangqiu was an ancient city in the Central Plains, once the capital of the Shang dynasty, rich in history. The ancestral merchants of Shang bartered goods on a grand scale here, whence later terms like “merchant” and “commodity” derived. Shangqiu remained bustling, teeming with merchants and filled with shops everywhere.

Arriving here, the woman surnamed Bai felt at ease like a fish in water. Not rushing onward, she stored her horse at an inn and dragged Gu Fengchen around the city. She bought all kinds of clothes, jewelry, rouge, and powders, eventually filling a large chest, turning Gu Fengchen into her attendant.

After finishing her shopping, Lady Bai recalled another matter and said to Gu Fengchen, “I have a maternal aunt in Shangqiu living in the western quarter—she is from a prosperous family and has adored me since I was young. Now that we’re at her doorstep, if I don’t visit, we may never see each other again. Please accompany me there.”

Gu Fengchen disliked going with her and replied, “Go yourself. I will wait for you at the inn.” Lady Bai pursed her lips, “That won’t do. When I see my aunt, she is certain to ask about my journey. What can I say then? I must admit someone is accompanying me. She will inevitably ask who, and if she hears I left you waiting at the inn, she’ll be displeased. How could I treat my rescuer that way? Then she’d have to summon you with a grand sedan chair. You decide—come with me voluntarily, or wait to be fetched?”

Hearing this, Gu Fengchen inwardly sighed. Unwilling to draw attention for fear of recognition, he reluctantly said, “Fine, I’ll go with you. But I have urgent business and must hasten our journey.”

Lady Bai laughed, “At my aunt’s home, how can I not linger a few more days? Rest assured, she will certainly thank you properly. Once she has shown her gratitude, you may stay or leave as you wish. Fair enough?”

Gu Fengchen nodded, “Alright, but there’s no need for your aunt to thank me. You gave me plenty of silver; consider that my thanks.” Lady Bai gave a light laugh, “What you gave me was a second life, not something mere silver can buy.”

The two returned to the inn, retrieved their horses, and headed straight west.

Said to live west of the city, it wasn’t in the western part within the city, but outside and westward. Exiting the city gates, they followed the main road for less than half a shichen (an hour) when they spotted a large manor beside the path. Emerald green tiles and red walls stood at least one zhang and four or five chi (around 5 meters) tall. Jet-black doors were studded with gleaming yellow brass nails, the two beast-head door knockers polished to a shine. A black horizontal plaque above the eaves, inscribed with gold lettering, bore two large characters: Lu Manor.

It seemed the aunt of this Lady Bai had married into a family surnamed Lu.

At this hour, nearing noon, two servants sat lazily by the gate. Seeing the pair leading horses towards them, one slowly stood up, eyeing them sideways. Lady Bai barked out an order, “Go tell your master that Lady Bai seeks an audience.”

The servant shot back, “And who might you be? Do you know where this is?” Lady Bai glared, “This is my aunt’s residence! Do as you’re told and go, don’t waste words!”

Her fierce tone diminished the servant’s arrogance. He hastily nodded, “Going… going right now…” With that, he scurried inside to announce them.

Gu Fengchen thought to himself, this family master must surely be a local tyrant; even the gatekeepers were this insolent.

Shortly after, a man emerged from within the gate. Tall, robust, and imposing with distinguished looks, he appeared to be in his forties or fifties. Upon seeing Lady Bai, his brow creased, “It’s you…”

Lady Bai hurried forward and performed a small curtsy, “I pay my respects to my uncle… I am Xiao Bai. I’ve come all this way to see my aunt. This gentleman,” she pointed to Gu Fengchen, “is my savior. He’s an extraordinary man.”

The man nodded with a chuckle, “Oh? Your aunt is feeling a little unwell; she hasn’t risen yet.” Descending the stone steps, he clasped his fists towards Gu Fengchen, “Since you are Xiao Bai’s savior, you are also Lu So-and-so’s savior. Please, come in, come in.”

So speaking, he took Gu Fengchen by the hand and urged him inside. Lady Bai skipped down too and grabbed Gu Fengchen’s other arm. The two welcomed him through the main gate, one on each side.

Gu Fengchen saw how vast the manor was. He couldn’t tell how many courtyards it had. Only after passing through the third courtyard did they arrive before a large hall. It seemed a banquet was underway; although the hall doors were closed, voices could still be heard filtering out.

The Lu master smiled at Gu Fengchen, “The two of you have arrived at the perfect time. My humble home is currently hosting numerous esteemed guests. How about joining us for a conversation?”

Unwilling to see many people, and especially wary of encountering martial world figures, Gu Fengchen demurred, “This humble person has urgent business. It would be inconvenient for me to linger. Since Lady Bai has arrived home, I shall take my leave.” With that, he turned to depart.

The Lu master intercepted him, still smiling, “Master Gu, you’ve only just arrived; how could you leave so soon? We absolutely must keep you a while longer.”

Gu Fengchen was momentarily stunned, “How do you know my surname is Gu?”

The Lu master merely chuckled mysteriously, not answering. He walked towards the hall doors with Lady Bai and pushed them open. From inside, a voice boomed out, “Not only does he know your name is Gu, everyone here knows.”

The hall doors swung wide open, revealing a crowd inside. At the forefront stood the leader of the Four Great Clans, the current Martial World Alliance Leader, Zhuge Ren’s father—Zhuge Xianyun.

Behind him stood the two fort masters of Twin Dragon Fort—Long Xielan (female) and Du Qianlong; Gate Master Wan Chongshan of Golden Eagle Gate; Nangong Yue, Master of the Nangong Family by Dongting Lake; along with over ten formidable fighters and aides. Simultaneously, hidden soldiers rose all around the courtyard. Figures appeared upon the high walls and rooftops, cutting off all routes of retreat.

Gu Fengchen was now completely surrounded.

Zhuge Xianyun led the group out of the hall and stood facing Gu Fengchen. His posture was stern and upright, yet his gaze still showed a trace of subdued anger.

Zhuge Ren was his eldest son, his favorite child, much like his father in temperament. His death had dealt Zhuge Xianyun a heavy blow. Despite his exceptional self-restraint, he couldn’t entirely conceal the grief and indignation in his heart.

Gu Fengchen’s thoughts, however, ran in a different direction. He fixed his gaze on Lady Bai. “You deceived me! This isn’t your aunt’s home.” Lady Bai giggled, “Correct. I have no aunt. I have no kin. I am but a lost spirit, a ghost. However… very soon, I will have relatives…”

Long Xielan interrupted, “Lady Bai, you performed admirably. We will keep our promise. Go to the rear now; someone will receive you.”

Lady Bai raised an eyebrow at Gu Fengchen, “My thanks to you.”

Complete comprehension dawned on Gu Fengchen. This entire affair was Lady Bai’s scheme. Her story of fleeing a marriage, of being chased down—all meticulously planned by her. The goal was to win his trust, trick him into escorting her to Shangqiu, right into their prearranged trap.

He was gripped by a profound mix of grief and fury. He had acted righteously, disregarding his own safety, only to be manipulated, used as someone else’s tool. People often said the Jianghu was treacherous, but only now did Gu Fengchen truly grasp its meaning.

Lady Bai threw back one last, seductive smile at him, then turned and walked into the great hall to collect her reward from the back.

Gu Fengchen swept his gaze over the assembly of heroes before him. He slowly forced his boiling anger down, only to feel another kind of fierce spirit surge upwards from within.

So what if there were thousands of tigers and wolves? So what if encircled by a hundred layers? So long as he breathed, he would not be taken so easily!

His eyes swept over each face in turn. Though he hadn’t truly met Zhuge Xianyun before, he could guess that the one with bearing grander than the masters of Twin Dragon Fort or Wan Chongshan must be him.

In terms of martial prowess, Wan Chongshan and Du Qianlong were both already formidable enough to match him. If they attacked together, he would undoubtedly lose, not to mention the many other experts beside them. Though brimming with heroic spirit, it seemed likely that today, his bones would be buried here.

Gu Fengchen was never really afraid of dying. In fact, since the day he stepped into the Jianghu (Martial World), he had been prepared for this. Yet in his heart, he yearned for his death to be a blaze of glory. Looking now, at least this, he seemed to have gotten his wish.

The courtyard was momentarily as silent as death. Naturally, Gu Fengchen said nothing, and on the other side, no one dared speak before Zhuge Xianyun; after all, both publicly and privately, he should be the first to question.

Zhuge Xianyun gave a light cough and asked, “Did my worthless son, Zhuge Ren, commit any wrongdoing against you, sir?”

This statement took everyone entirely by surprise. No one expected Zhuge Xianyun to pose such a question. This meant that as long as Gu Fengchen fabricated a reason, pinning a heap of unjust acts on Zhuge Ren, wouldn’t Zhuge Ren then have deserved his death? What then of their vow to avenge him?

Long Xielan sneered inwardly: This old man never forgets his pride. As the Martial League leader, he must always appear magnanimous. In truth, his desire to see Gu Fengchen dead burns fiercer than anyone else’s.

Hearing this, Gu Fengchen considered telling them about how Zhuge Ren had imprisoned Hua Yuehen and other women, coercing him into snatching the armor. But, on one hand, Hua Yuehen’s Broken Heart City was already despised by the Jianghu (Martial World). On the other hand, accusing Zhuge Ren of secretly coveting the armor would be stirring discord among the Four Great Clans. These two factors combined meant everyone would surely disbelieve him, thinking him a liar trying to save his own life by blackening a dead man’s name. They say don’t speak ill of the dead; Zhuge Ren was already gone. Adding more crimes atop him? Gu Fengchen couldn’t bring himself to do it.

Moreover, he considered, the Four Great Clans had issued the Kill Order. No matter what, they intended to take his life today. Giving any reason would be useless and worse, it would make him look deathly afraid. What was the point? So Gu Fengchen snorted coldly: “He did nothing wrong against me or the righteousness of the Jianghu. I simply struck too hard and killed him. Whoever wishes to avenge him, step forward now.”

Zhuge Xianyun nodded slowly: “To admit it openly makes you a hero of sorts. Only… what you did was excessive. I have nothing more to say.” With that, he turned and walked slowly back into the hall, not glancing back again.

Though the League Leader, he was still Zhuge Ren’s father. If he commanded people to kill Gu Fengchen, some might accuse him of abusing power for personal vengeance. Therefore, by leaving, he allowed others to act on their own initiative.

With Zhuge Xianyun gone, it naturally fell to Wan Chongshan to direct the crowd. Wan Chongshan took two steps forward, tucking his hands behind his back, and said, “Do you still intend to fight?” Gu Fengchen retorted, “What will you do?” Wan Chongshan stated, “Today, your evils are full. You deserve to die. Yet, by Jianghu rules, we cannot simply swarm you. Besides, those present here are all renowned figures; joining forces to bully a junior is not the way of the righteous path. If you understand your current predicament, why not spare us the trouble? Kill yourself. I acknowledge you are a man, daring in deeds and accepting of consequences. I promise to escort your body back to your homeland for a proper burial. What say you to this condition?”

Gu Fengchen laughed loudly toward the sky: “I thank you for your kindness! Gu has drifted all his life, rootless. I have no kin or friends left anywhere. They say: the earth buries the dead anywhere without discrimination. Today I die. So be it! But ask me to kill myself? Never! Come at me together if you will! What does Gu fear!” As he spoke, he shook off his loose outer robe more briskly and tossed his bamboo hat aside, readying himself for the decisive battle.

Seeing him adamant, Wan Chongshan simply nodded silently, thinking to himself: This man dares make such bold claims; his martial skills must indeed be formidable. He hadn’t seen Gu Fengchen’s true face during the Treasure Seizing Assembly, so he didn’t recognize his identity, only finding his voice and build vaguely familiar, without recalling this was the man who had once defeated him. Watching Gu Fengchen adopt his fighting stance, Wan Chongshan returned to his group. He waved to those nearby and announced: “Any hero wishing to avenge Young Hero Zhuge may step forward now.”

Among the group at his back, many had been itching to fight, growing impatient, thinking, Why waste more words? Let’s just jump over and kill this man. Therefore, as soon as Wan Chongshan gave the signal, several leaped from the crowd.

Gu Fengchen was resolved to die and thus felt no need to conserve strength. He would fight as long as he could. The first three challengers exchanged only a total of five palm strikes with him before all were blasted back, coughing blood, severely injured, and forced to retreat.

This immediately alerted Wan Chongshan and others. Though only five strikes, true masters remained true masters, possessing sharp eyes. Du Qianlong and Wan Chongshan exchanged a glance and simultaneously demanded: “Are you the man who seized the Treasure Armor at the West Lake assembly?”

Gu Fengchen roared with laughter: “Correct! Snatching the armor and taking lives—both were done by me, Gu! If you seek vengeance and to wash away the shame, you’ve found the right man!”

Hearing his candid admission, both were startled. That day at the West Lake, Gu Fengchen had astonished everyone with his skills. Seizing the Treasure Armor and displaying potent Internal Energy—it was no trivial feat. Now, though surrounded, killing him would certainly not be easy.

Moreover, a strange point—the man had taken the armor but wasn’t wearing it. Wan Chongshan asked, “Where is the Treasure Armor?” Gu Fengchen sneered, “Already gifted away. As to whom, don’t bother asking. I don’t know myself.”

Du Qianlong stated gravely, “In that case, we shall not stand on ceremony.” Gu Fengchen laughed harshly, “Since when have any of you ever shown…”

Long Xielan cut him off sharply: “This man is an expert of the wicked path! He possesses the protective Treasure Armor! Fellow heroes, abandon duels one-on-one! To rid the martial world of such a scourge—even the Jianghu rules can be bent!”

Du Qianlong concurred: “Indeed! We attack together!”

At their command, they stepped back with Wan Chongshan to block the exit. Their status within the Jianghu (Martial World) was too high for them to participate in a swarm, as that would grant Gu Fengchen too much face.

Following this order, the experts from the rear and the rooftops surged simultaneously, encircling Gu Fengren in the center of the killing ground. Immediately, strikes came from all sides, a deluge engulfing Gu Fengchen.

Gu Fengchen’s situation now was far more perilous than when Ling Ling had been trapped at the Five Precepts Manor. Back then, though also surrounded, her enemies’ skills were generally not exceptionally high, and they mostly came at her one by one. Even so, Ling Ling had nearly been captured. Here, Gu Fengren faced off against nearly all the top-ranked masters of the Jianghu (Martial World)—only those supremely skilled had the qualification to sit in the main hall with the leaders of the Four Great Clans. And they attacked all at once, not giving Gu Fengchen the slightest breath of respite. Everyone present understood: Gu Fengchen might hold out for a short time, but not long. Soon enough, he would be caught by a fatal strike, fall, and be slain on the spot.

Gu Fengcen summoned his formidable spirit, meeting the combined assault with his full power. Focused Internal Energy surged. Every palm he unleashed erupted with brutal force, sending sand and stones flying within the encirclement. Yet the heroes, crammed too tightly together, found little room to dodge; they were forced to accept blow after blow head-on. Boom-boom-boom! Five or six clapped palms in real combat with him. Unable to withstand the impact, those hit flew backward. Those lightly hurt felt the blood churning within them, hard to calm; those grievously injured coughed blood, suffering internal wounds, and had to pull back from the fray.

Watching this, some among the heroes yelled, “Spread out a little! Do not crowd together!” These men were masters, their battlefield experience rich. They grasped the tactic immediately. Whoosh! The circle expanded, forming a ring eight or nine feet across around Gu Fengchen. It contained him, making escape tough, while allowing them better angles for attack.

Though the circle wasn’t small, at least two attackers constantly flanked Gu Fengchen; often one struck front, back, left, and right. Gu Fengchen’s hands and feet moved almost without pause, constantly parrying. The attackers coordinated, each stepping up to launch one or two techniques before being relieved by another, stepping back to regain breath and stamina, then stepping in again.

The heroes’ strategy was plain: exhaust Gu Fengchen’s Internal Energy reserves first, wear him down until he was weak, before capturing him alive or killing him at will.

Gu Fengchen knew their game perfectly well, but he couldn’t slack for an instant. Every strike coming his way targeted critical points on his body; he had to block or evade them all.

After a dozen more exchanges, Gu Fengchen had no choice but to start conserving his dwindling Internal Energy. Sensing his palm strength gradually diminishing, the heroes secretly smirked, their attacks intensifying further.

Gu Fengchen thought that without seeking change, he would be exhausted to death on the spot. Though his Heaven-Defying Divine Art was formidable, it ultimately couldn’t exceed the body’s limits. Once his potential was depleted, he would inevitably collapse and die.

Having reached this conclusion, Gu Fengchen steeled his resolve and prepared for a desperate gamble. Just then, someone behind struck a punch toward his back. Clenching his teeth, Gu Fengchen channeled a surge of inner energy to his spine to protect his heart meridians and forcefully took the blow.

Thud! The fist landed solidly on Gu Fengchen’s back with tremendous force. Sent flying forward, he appeared injured.

Overjoyed at landing the punch, the attacker had never expected a direct hit; he’d even held back some strength to brace for Gu Fengchen’s counterattack. Yet no resistance came—Gu Fengchen seemed caught off guard.

Seeing Gu Fengchen struck, the surrounding fighters rejoiced, assuming his Internal Energy was depleted.

But this was precisely what Gu Fengchen had anticipated. His reinforced inner protection rendered the punch harmless—it merely gave him a boost.

Borrowing the strike’s momentum, he stamped his toes against the ground. Crack! The blue bricks shattered as his body shot toward the hall like an arrow launched from its bowstring.

The external force combined with his own strength propelled him at an impossible speed.

The men ahead intercepted, but Gu Fengchen activated his Heaven-Defying Divine Art mid-air, turning two somersaults and dodging every attack.

His target: Zhuge Xianyun, seated unmoving within the hall.

This move defied all expectations. Conventionally, escape required bursting outward, so Du Qianlong and two others had sealed the exits. None foresaw Gu Fengchen charging inward—toward the Alliance Leader whose unfathomable skills hadn’t been witnessed in years.

Despite their disbelief, the heroes could only watch, stunned, as Gu Fengchen surged past their defenses.

Mid-flight, Gu Fengchen heard an almost imperceptible hiss. Someone had launched a Hidden Weapon—likely a slender projectile like a silver needle. Judging by the sound, it targeted his leg. Dodging would disrupt his trajectory, forcing him to land short of the hall and suffer another brawl.

Refusing to yield, he ignored the needle, channeling his remaining Internal Energy to his leg muscles to prevent bone injury.

Sure enough, a gleam of silver flashed—a needle silently pierced his calf. Prepared, he resisted with his inner force, leaving a fraction of it protruding from his flesh.

Seeing this, Long Xielan smiled faintly.

She had fired the needle.

Though impressed by Gu Fengchen’s daring charge, it didn’t soften her attack. The needle’s true danger lay in its rare Changbai Mountain serpent poison—a blood-sealing venom that stopped hearts within half an hour.

Her smile sharpened, certain he’d soon falter.

Little did she know, Gu Fengchen already harbored two of the world’s deadliest toxins. Her previous poisoned needles at Jianxian Manor had failed to kill him. Now, this new needle caused only slight skin-deep pain before his internal poisons swiftly neutralized the venom, expelling it as fluid.

Unhindered, Gu Fengchen landed before Zhuge Xianyun.

The Alliance Leader sat facing away, sipping tea. Before fully touching down, Gu Fengchen aimed a punch at his skull.

Outside, someone shouted, “Leader, beware! An ambush!”

Zhuge Xianyun remained still. When the fist neared his head, water from his left palm’s teacup split into two icy streams targeting Gu Fengchen’s eyes. Simultaneously, his right hand extended backward, two scissor-like fingers snapping toward the striking wrist.

This counter-offensive revealed extraordinary Internal Energy mastery. Many could splash water with inner force—splitting it into two precisely aimed jets while immobile was another matter. Dividing power so perfectly was a feat only three living masters might achieve.

Just as Gu Fengchen’s fist connected, water jets shot at his eyes, while Zhuge Xianyun’s fingers intercepted its path. Before reaching its target, his wrist would be pinned.

Gu Fengchen had exhausted his momentum mid-vault, leaving no room to dodge. Frantically, he raised his right palm to shield his eyes while changing his fist to a grab at Zhuge Xianyun’s fingers. Sensing this, the leader shifted—extending three other fingers to form a palm. Thump! Their palms clashed.

Splash! Water dispersed against Gu Fengchen’s palm, halting his advance and repelling him three feet away.

In one exchange, Gu Fengchen had failed to breach Zhuge Xianyun’s defense—despite the leader’s turned back, revealing his disadvantage.

Onlookers roared approval, even drawing wonder from Wan Chongshan and Du Qianlong. Years ago, they’d studied Zhuge Xianyun’s moves, but his decades of inaction had frozen their assessment. His present display confirmed what they now grasped plainly: among the Four Great Clans, the Alliance Leader remained the supreme master.

Gu Fengchen failed to break through. The remaining heroes outside leaped through the hall entrance, closing in from all directions. To avoid being surrounded, his only path was to charge towards the rear hall. Yet, blocking his way was precisely Zhuge Xianyun. If he didn’t overcome this obstacle immediately, the pursuing heroes would encircle him again, making a repeat of his earlier escape tactic impossible. Therefore, with an angry roar, Gu Fengchen propelled himself forward like a massive arrow aimed straight at Zhuge Xianyun. His fists led the way, resembling twin hammers capable of smashing mountains.

Hearing his fierce momentum, Zhuge Xianyun knew Gu Fengchen was fighting desperately. Yet, he maintained a leisurely demeanor. Just as Gu Fengchen was about to collide with him, Zhuge Xianyun’s figure abruptly lowered by over a foot.

He hadn’t shrunk for no reason. This happened because all four legs of the chair he sat on had sunk completely into the ground.

Without a sound, Zhuge Xianyun had made the chair flush with the ground. The level of skill this required was indeed astounding.

Gu Fengchen found Zhuge Xianyun abruptly vanishing from his sight. Before he could react, a hand shot out from beneath him, landing a solid palm strike bang on his chest and abdomen.

This strike naturally came from Zhuge Xianyun. Now positioned much lower, Gu Fengchen was flying directly over his head, his vital chest and abdomen area left wide open. How could Zhuge Xianyun pass up such an opportunity? This palm strike condensed his greatest strength, fueled by all the anguish of his lost son.

Although Gu Fengchen possessed deep internal energy, firstly, his opponent’s strike was overwhelmingly powerful, and secondly, he had concentrated all his energy into his fists, leaving his chest and abdomen defenseless. Only at the instant of impact did he barely muster some internal energy to resist. As a result, the force penetrated deep into his organs, grievously wounding him. Fortunately, Zhuge Xianyun had expended some portion of his internal energy moments before when leveling the chair with the ground; consequently, the palm strike wasn’t delivered at its maximum potential. If that hadn’t been the case, Gu Fengchen wouldn’t merely be injured – he would have died on the spot.

Even so, Gu Fengchen felt all his organs displaced, almost forcing their way out through his mouth. Dizziness assaulted him, golden stars danced before his eyes, nearly blinding him. A sweet taste rose in his throat; unable to suppress it, he opened his mouth and spewed a torrent of fresh blood.

The force of the blow sent his body flying forward several meters, where it hit the floor with a heavy thud.

Had it been anyone else, they would have been dead from such a strike. But Gu Fengchen, having trained in the Heaven-Defying Divine Art, managed to remain conscious despite not fainting immediately. His mind was still clear: he absolutely could not collapse now.

He shook his head, astonishingly managed to spring up from the ground, and stood on his feet. Zhuge Xianyun’s strike offered one slight advantage: it had flung him to the entrance of the rear hall, now much further from the crowd of heroes.

Clenching his teeth, Gu Fengchen desperately circulated his internal energy, forcing back the surge of blood rising to his throat. Not daring to hesitate for even a second, he lunged towards the rear hall.

The heroes shouted and gave chase en masse.

Wan Chongshan, along with Du Qianlong and his wife, approached Zhuge Xianyun to offer congratulations. Du Qianlong gave a thumbs-up sign. “His brother’s martial prowess had not diminished! In fact, it seems stronger now than years ago! Truly commendable!” Long Xielan added, “With that strike, brother, you took vengeance for Ren’er. That surnamed Gu is gravely wounded. Even if no one pursued him, he wouldn’t live beyond a fleeting moment.”

Zhuge Xianyun offered only a faint smile. “If it weren’t for your wife’s needle earlier, I might not have succeeded. Ah… Karmic retribution. I wonder if this young man surnamed Gu has a son. If he does, knowing we killed his father, he’ll consider himself an enemy of the Four Great Clans. Retribution begets retribution; when will it ever end?”

Wan Chongshan made no judgment call. “We live in the Jianghu (Martial World). Often, we simply must act. As for endings, let posterity judge that. For now, let’s see which one of us can bring back the head of that surnamed Gu.”

Zhuge Xianyun glanced at him but said no more.

Meanwhile, Gu Fengchen burst into the rear hall, finding himself in a short corridor. Ignoring everything else, he charged straight through it. Lifting his gaze, he saw he was now in the rear residential quarters. Two rows of houses stood there, their doors tightly shut. Gu Fengchen had no mind for this, focused solely on finding an escape route.

The shouts of the pursuing heroes were getting closer behind him; they would overtake him within a few leaps.

Gu Fengchen strained to sprint desperately. Just as he was about to pass between the two rows of houses, suddenly, the door of the very last room at the end banged open. Gu Fengchen braced for someone to leap out and intercept him; in his current state, an interception spelled almost certain doom. He couldn’t help but sigh deeply.

Yet, after the door opened, no one sprang out. Instead, a hand stretched desperately out across the threshold from inside, as if trying to grasp something.

Running up to the doorway, Gu Fengchen swept a glance inside and was deeply shocked.

A woman lay sprawled just inside, her face pressed to the floor, body curled tightly. She seemed to be in extreme agony, moaning incessantly. Only her hand reached outside the door, seemingly begging for help but unable to cry out.

Judging by her back and clothes, this woman was that Lady Bai.

Hearing someone rush in, Lady Bai struggled to lift her head for a look. Her eyes met Gu Fengchen’s.

They locked gazes for a moment. Lady Bai seemed unable to focus clearly on who stood before her but finally managed a plea: “Help me…” Gu Fengchen frowned. He had no desire to see this treacherous woman again and leaped over the doorway, running onward.

Though only a glance, Gu Fengchen noted Lady Bai’s complexion had turned a sickly grayish-blue, her lips were purple—clear signs of poisoning.

Serves her right! The thought flickered through Gu Fengchen’s mind.

But no sooner had he rushed past the doorway than a violent pain surged through his injured organs. He could no longer suppress the roiling blood and energy in his chest, spewing another mouthful of blood onto the ground. As a martial practitioner, Gu Fengchen knew full well what continuous vomiting of blood meant: severe internal injury. He wouldn’t hold on much longer and couldn’t run much farther.

Today is truly the day I die. The thought flashed in Gu Fengchen’s heart.

An inner pang struck him. Since today is the end, I might as well do one good deed before I perish. With this resolve, he spun around, grabbed Lady Bai, hauled her onto his back, and charged forward once more.

Gu Fengchen was already gravely injured. Even unburdened he couldn’t run quickly, let alone carrying someone. Luckily, the rear quarters were cramped and winding, making it hard for the heroes to close in rapidly. Gu Fengchen reached the back door, kicked it open violently, and sprinted out of the estate.

Upon exiting the Lu Estate, Gu Fengchen inwardly groaned in frustration and let out a quiet sigh.

Just a short distance behind the estate lay a wide river. It had neither bridge nor boat, though a three-tiered earthen platform stood by the bank, rising about ten meters high. While appearing ceremonial, it was in truth dedicated to the River God.

Gu Fengchen scanned his surroundings helplessly; this place was a dead end with no escape route. Carrying Lady Bai, he climbed the platform, intending to use his inner energy to expel her poison. Yet, the moment he tried to gather his qi, he felt blood surging in his throat. He knew his internal injuries were too severe for such exertion. By now, Lady Bai’s face was paper-white, her breath ragged and faint.

Seeing her near death, Gu Fengchen had no choice but to resort to a desperate remedy. He used his nail to cut his own arm, pried Lady Bai’s mouth open, and poured his blood into it.

The pursuing warriors caught up just then, surrounding the platform from all sides—ensuring the pair could flee no longer.

Gu Fengchen, grievously injured internally and weakened by blood loss, paled significantly. Fortunately, after gulping several mouthfuls of blood, Lady Bai slowly opened her eyes.

Seeing Gu Fengchen feeding her his blood, realization dawned on her. She stopped drinking and twisted her body away, rolling aside. Overwhelmed by a nauseating discomfort, she retched violently, spewing streams of black liquid. Thus, the poison she had ingested was expelled. Gu Fengchen’s toxic blood, a blend of two kinds of the deadliest poisons under heaven, swiftly neutralized the toxin—common poisons stood no chance. The poisonous blood she swallowed had merely passed through her esophagus and stomach without entering her bloodstream, so it posed no lasting harm.

Gu Fengchen observed the enemies closing in from all sides; trapped with no way forward or back, he knew survival was impossible. His gaze fixed on the flowing river, and strangely, calm settled over him. He thought: This place resembles the Yi River back in my homeland. To die here… would be like my soul returning home.

Dark clouds now blanketed the sky, a fierce wind moaning mournfully—evoking a chilling sense of “The wind howls cold, the Yi River flows; Valiant warriors go, never to return.”

As the crowd ascended the platform from all directions, Gu Fengchen knew time was short. He asked Lady Bai, “Can you swim?”

“Could,” she replied. “Do you want me to carry you into the river to escape?”

Gu Fengchen offered a faint smile. “My wounds are life-threatening. Escape is pointless now. Go without me.” Lady Bai wore the same provocative expression she had shown him earlier in the abandoned house, laughing lightly. “Go alone? With my strength, I could never jump that far.”

It was true. The platform dropped a sheer ten meters to the river. Weakened from just expelling the poison, Lady Bai was too frail to make the leap. Even at full strength, it would have been unlikely.

“It doesn’t matter,” Gu Fengchen reassured her. “I can help you. I can throw you to the river.” Struggling to his feet, he extended his hand. “Take my hand. I’ll hurl you towards the river. Trust me—this one last act I can manage. And… I truly wish to save you, not to hurl you to your death.”

Lady Bai didn’t approach. She tilted her head and asked, “I harmed you. Why save me? I don’t believe you’re so kind.” Seeing the crowd pressing nearer, Gu Fengchen urged, “You needn’t believe anything else, but today, please trust me just once.” Lady Bai remained unhurried, replying with a coy smile, “Perhaps… but I want to hear why. Why save me? Once you’re gone, I’ll never know.”

Gu Fengchen had no choice but to explain. “I save you… to perform one righteous deed before I die. It’s for my own peace, nothing more. Not out of pity for you. Alright?”

Hearing this, Lady Bai’s face instantly darkened. Tears welled dangerously in her eyes. “So, you don’t want me to remember you? You don’t want me to regret harming you? You don’t want me to try saving you?” Gu Fengchen laughed bitterly. “In the rush… I hadn’t thought that far ahead.”

For a moment, they simply gazed at each other, sharing the absurdity. Then Lady Bai suddenly lunged forward, knocking Gu Fengchen down. Tears finally spilled from her eyes, wetting his face.

She buried her head against his neck, whispering, “You’re honest. Even now, you won’t lie. All my life, I’ve searched for a man like you. Now I’ve found you… I won’t go. I’ll die here, beside you.”

Gu Fengchen gently raised her. “You can live. Do you truly wish to die with me?”

Lady Bai stared resolutely into his eyes. “Not just die with you today… I… I also want… I want to marry you.” Gu Fengchen was stunned. “Marry me? What?” Lady Bai held his gaze. “Will you have me?”

Gu Fengchen felt fate played a cruel joke—to encounter a woman wanting marriage at death’s door. “You needn’t say such things. Dying now holds no regret for me. Marrying you brings me joy only because…” he trailed off.

Lady Bai murmured softly, “I don’t need your joy. Only your peace. Isn’t that the hardest thing—to die in peace? I know you scorn me. I am a bad woman. All I want… in these last moments… is to find a man I can lean upon, if only for half an instant. Once we perish, you will ascend to heaven… while I… descend to hell…” Gu Fengchen moved his hand to cover her mouth, silencing her.

The crowd hemmed them in just a few steps away. Zhuge Xianyun and the other three leaders hadn’t approached; Gu Fengchen was already like a candle in the wind, too weak to merit their effort.

One man shouted contemptuously, “A pair of twisted devils! Facing death, yet still all lovey-dovey? Spare us the shame! Kill yourselves and save our blades the foul work!”

Gu Fengchen ignored them entirely. He asked Lady Bai, “What is your name?” Before she could answer, a voice sneered from the crowd, “She’s Bai Jingjing! ‘Jing’ as in the capital. But everyone calls her ‘Jing’ as in malevolence!”

Mocking laughter followed. Another voice called out, “She also bears the name White Scorpion! Quite famous in the Martial World—though not for good reasons! Can you truly be ignorant?”

A shadow fell over Bai Jingjing’s face. She hung her head in silence.

Gu Fengchen lifted her chin. “I asked for your name.”

Bai Jingjing’s phoenix eyes brimmed with tears. “I am… Bai Jingjing… also called White…” Gu Fengchen cut her off. “Enough. That’s sufficient.”

He grasped Bai Jingjing’s hands firmly and lifted his face towards the sky, proclaiming loudly, “I, Gu Fengchen, make a vow to heaven today! May heaven grant mercy! May Lady Bai Jingjing consent to my proposal! Heaven and earth, bear witness to my heart! My vow holds for this lifetime and beyond—eternal and unbroken!”

After speaking, he looked at Bai Jingjing:

“Will you marry me, Gu Fengchen?”

An expression of utter joy appeared on Bai Jingjing’s face, yet her throat choked up, leaving her speechless. She could only nod repeatedly.

Gu Fengchen declared:

“From this moment on, you are my wife. Be it heaven or hell, we shall face it together.”

Hearing this, Bai Jingjing wept for joy:

“Be it heaven or hell, we shall face it together.”

As she spoke, she closed her eyes and nestled into Gu Fengchen’s embrace. Both felt a profound peace and steadiness in their hearts. Though formidable enemies surrounded them, and death seemed inevitable, they appeared blind to it all. Within their hearts lay only tranquility and joy.

The gathered heroes exchanged glances. None stepped forward to strike. Even they could not bear to disrupt this destined pair. Everyone could see it—Gu Fengchen’s chest was drenched in blood, and fresh crimson still seeped from the corner of his mouth. His internal organs were clearly beyond saving. Even a man with no martial skill could take his life with a single gentle punch now.

Since Gu Fengchen would certainly die today, sparing him an extra moment changed nothing. Moreover, their heartfelt vows upon the brink of death, becoming husband and wife, was deeply moving.

Many among the crowd began to grow quietly impressed by Gu Fengchen. All knew Bai Jingjing had lured him here to end his life. Yet even after suffering fatal wounds himself, Gu Fengchen had still rushed to save Bai Jingjing, reckless of his own safety—truly returning good for evil. How could such a man kill Zhuge Ren for no reason?

Numerous figures sensed hidden circumstances here but refrained from asking. After all, Gu Fengchen was gravely wounded, soon to perish. With both doomed to die, the truth of right and wrong ceased to matter.

Gu Fengchen slowly rose to his feet, shielding Bai Jingjing behind him. Mustering his final strength, he declared:

“Friends, today, Gu Fengchen and his wife welcome death. To whichever one of you takes my life, I have one request.”

A voice called from the crowd:

“What is it?”

Gu Fengchen replied:

“A scholar may die, but not be humiliated. Once I fall, I beseech you to let my wife end her own life. Show her no indignity.”

The voice answered:

“That we can grant. After both your deaths, we will bury your bodies together. Thus your wish will be fulfilled.”

Gu Fengchen clasped his hands in salute to the speaker:

“My thanks.”

The man said:

“What blade for your neck? I will lend it.”

Gu Fengchen laughed aloud:

“Gu Fengchen needs no suicide! With these last reserves, I still wish to fight!”

The heroes were stunned:

“Not suicide? But you still want to battle!”

Gu Fengchen stated:

“To submit to slaughter is not my nature. My nature is to fight until my last drop of blood is shed.”

Behind him, Bai Jingjing clapped her hands, laughing:

“My husband, you are my hero.”

A cold snort came from the crowd:

“A pair of evil cultists, near death yet without shame! This ‘Mountain-Splitting Six Shields’ will claim your dog lives!” A large man strode forward, planting himself proudly before Gu Fengchen, utterly overbearing.

Gu Fengchen did not recognize him and asked Bai Jingjing:

“Madam, who is this?”

Bai Jingjing giggled:

“That’s Ding Zhou. They call him ‘Mountain-Splitting Six Shields,’ but his true talent isn’t splitting mountains—it’s splitting the scene. At least seventeen times he’s turned tail and ran from a fight.” Grins rippled through the crowd. In truth, Ding Zhou was no coward; he was renowned for brutal courage—an uncompromising, iron-willed warrior. His fierce intolerance for heretics made Gu and Bai’s love declaration strike him as grotesque, provoking his confrontation.

Ding Zhou bellowed in fury:

“You viper of a woman! Cease your slander! Since setting foot in the Jianghu, Ding Zhou has fought over seventy battles, large and small! Never once have I retreated!” With that, he ripped off his shirt, revealing a barrel chest.

Every eye saw it—no less than twenty or thirty scars riddled his body, rendering it a nearly unbroken tapestry of wounds. Though all lived by the sword, such sheer toughness was rarely seen. Murmurs of admiration swept the throng.

Gu Fengchen nodded:

“A fine warrior. A fine spirit. Unleash your skill! Gu Fengchen wishes to witness what this ‘Mountain-Splitting Six Shields’ really means!”

Everyone understood—Gu Fengchen was spent. Merely standing was an effort, let alone combat. His bold words about fighting the masses were bravado. Any contender now could effortlessly snuff out his life. But if that was the case, why the hesitation?

One reason alone: Gu Fengchen’s head was the key to the Jianghu’s next sovereign throne.

If so, why no desperate rush? Because every man here knew his limitations. The formidable power of the Four Great Clans loomed large. If an outsider claimed Gu Fengchen’s head and seized the title of Young Master, consequences could be dire. The Four Great Clans, especially, would harbor deep displeasure—unspoken, yet certain. Schemes would soon form to topple him. Humiliation would be the least; his life might follow.

Zhuge Xianyun might abstain, but Long Xielan and Wan Chongshan? One could never be sure. Especially Long Xielan, the ‘Female Zhuge’. If she devised a trap, nine out of ten would fall straight in. Thus many thought: “Tempting as the crown is, my backside is too small for the seat. Leave it to the Four Great Clans!”

They waited for Zhuge Xianyun or others. Even Nangong Yue’s arrival would do. But the Four Great Clans had stayed conspicuously absent—perhaps to avoid involvement. Now, this hot-blooded Ding Zhou had lost patience and charged ahead.

A friend tugged at Ding Zhou’s arm. Fierce though he was, Ding Zhou was no fool. He understood the warning. Raising his voice, he declared:

“Release me! That title of Young Master? I will not take it! When the time comes, I yield it to Young Master Nangong Yue.”

With this assurance, his friend let go. Ding Zhou faced Gu Fengchen:

“You strike me as a true warrior. For that reason, I will hold nothing back. My first fist strikes your heart center. Are you prepared?”

Gu Fengchen smiled, nodding:

“Come.”

Ding Zhou clenched his fists, gathering Qi into his Dan Tian. Crackling sounds, like popping beans, echoed from his torso. Gu Fengchen admired inwardly—here was an exemplar of pure, orthodox martial discipline: the Thirteen Guardians’ Iron Body Training, utterly devoid of heresy. Respect filled Gu Fengchen—and stubborn defiance. He drew a deep breath, driving his Heaven-Defying Divine Art to its limit to meet the blow.

Watching from behind, Lady Bai’s face showed no grief, but her heart churned with unbearable fear. She could not bear to witness Gu Fengchen shattered by that fist. Yet she longed to gaze upon him just once more before death. Tormented by these conflicted feelings, unbalanced and unaware, tears blurred her vision.

Gu Fengchen took a deep breath and felt all his internal organs almost twist together. That agony was truly indescribable. He stubbornly gritted his teeth and held on, sweat dripping profusely from his head, yet his gaze remained resolute.

Such a tough man made Ding Zhou admire him involuntarily. He resolved that he would not let Gu Fengchen die in suffering. His plan was to kill the other with one punch immediately, which would be the ultimate respect for Gu Fengchen.

This was the mutual admiration of the valiant in the Jianghu (Martial World). Life and death were minor matters; integrity was what mattered most.

Ding Zhou concentrated his strength, suddenly roared loudly, raised his fist, and was about to strike down.

Just at that moment, Ding Zhou suddenly felt something cold on his neck. Some object fell onto his neck, extremely icy and slippery, and it seemed alive, wriggling softly.

This shock was no small matter. Ding Zhou swiftly swung his hand back and swept the thing off. After looking closely, he saw it was a long black snake. Its sharp fangs were exposed; if he hadn’t reacted quickly, two bloody holes would have been added to his neck.

Simultaneously, the crowd of heroes jumped around in disorder, constantly pulling snakes from their bodies and heads.

This was a earthen platform for sacrifices; how could so many snakes appear here? What’s more, the snakes weren’t all of one kind; they only had one thing in common: they were all venomous snakes.

So many venomous snakes couldn’t have fallen from the sky—was it literally raining snakes?

After sweeping the snakes off, everyone looked up and was immediately stunned.

They saw that at some point, a huge kite had flown in from the sky. A horizontal beam was fixed beneath the kite, and surprisingly, a person was dangling from that beam. At that moment, the person was suspended dozens of feet in the air above the platform, continuously throwing venomous snakes downward.

As soon as that person saw everyone looking up, he leaped off the beam without hesitation. A rope was tied around his waist, fastened to the beam. When he jumped down, the massive kite had already drifted toward the far side of the river; clearly, someone on the opposite shore was pulling hard on the kite string.

Chaos reigned on the platform then. Everyone was focused on the snakes under their feet or the kite overhead, paying no attention to Gu Fengchen and Bai Jingjing.

In a flash, the person who jumped from the kite came close to the platform. Head down and feet up, he reached out his hands and grabbed Gu Fengchen and Bai Jingjing one in each hand. Then, following the path of the kite, he flew away from the platform toward the far riverbank.

A few heroes in the crowd realized that the person on the kite had come to rescue Gu Fengchen and Bai Jingjing, but by then, the kite had drifted far off and was impossible to catch up to. So, they resorted to firing hidden weapons. Gu Fengchen was powerless at that point, but Lady Bai had already been cured of the poison; she was an expert in hidden weapons. She reached out and caught over half of the dozen or so hidden weapons sent her way, while the rest she deflected.

A howling wind blew as a giant kite carried three people across the river. However, since the trio was too heavy, the kite descended as it drifted. It finally landed on the ground not far beyond the river. Immediately after, a few horses ran out of the forest on the opposite shore, picked up the three people, and galloped away at breakneck speed.

The heroes stood on the platform only watching helplessly, feeling frantic with no way to act.

Gu Fengchen had begun to lose consciousness. He felt his body soaring as if riding clouds and mist. When he opened his eyes, he saw only a large bird, seemingly grabbing him with its claws and soaring higher. He thought to himself: I’m probably dead; the Queen Mother of the West is sending a green bird to fetch me to heaven. I wonder if I can see the Hall of Lingxiao…

In his daze, he imagined he heard a woman shouting at him. He turned his head and saw a female face before him: it was Ling Ling…

Struck as if by lightning in his heart, Gu Fengchen wondered: Had she died too?

Thinking this, Gu Fengchen called out, “Linger…” and reached out his hand. With this movement, he felt his organs churn violently; hot blood surged to his heart, his vision blacked out, and he lost consciousness.

When Gu Fengchen woke again, it was already night. A palace lantern lit up the surroundings brightly. He glanced around and saw himself lying on a carved large bed, covered with a silk brocade quilt and flanked by curtained tassels, all very luxurious. He vaguely smelled a strange fragrance.

This was an exquisite and refined room. Although not very spacious, it was furnished with unique artistry. In the center stood a table made from tree roots, with wicker chairs on either side, giving off an ancient aura. On the table sat a vermillion bird incense burner, with thin smoke rising in strands like filaments.

Aside from that, no one else was inside, making it unusually quiet.

Gu Fengchen tried to move his body but found he couldn’t move even a small finger. His heart quivered with surprise as he thought to himself: Is this the celestial realm now?

Almost immediately, his mind cleared. He chuckled inwardly: What am I thinking nonsense? My life is clearly still here. Only, how he escaped danger was still a mystery to him.

Unable to move, he unconsciously let out a groan.

Footsteps sounded, and a figure lifted a bamboo curtain and entered. Seeing he was awake, she hurried to the bedside and said with concern, “Husband, you’re finally awake. Thank the heavens.”

Of course, Gu Fengchen recognized her; she was Bai Jingjing, the wife he had married before escaping danger. Her complexion was rosy and fair; the poison in her body should be gone.

At the sight of Bai Jingjing, Gu Fengchen’s mind jolted intensely: I married her? Did I really marry her? Why did I agree to her request? If I ever see Ling Ling again someday…

He didn’t dare think further. Deep down, he held no affection for this Lady Bai; he’d only felt pity when she pleaded so sorrowfully on the platform. Back then, he was sure he would die anyway, so on impulse, he agreed to marry her. Now looking back, it had been immensely rash and reckless.

Seeing Gu Fengchen’s wide eyes fixed on her, Bai Jingjing involuntarily blushed with embarrassment. She retorted coyly, “What are you staring at… It’s like you’ve never seen someone, isn’t it?”

Gu Fengchen said, “Lady Bai, did I… truly promise to marry you?”

Bai Jingjing listened, feeling as if a knife was twisting her heart, and nearly shed tears. “I know you don’t want to marry me. Back then, we were both about to die, and you agreed only to make me feel better. I understand that in my heart. Now that you are fine, I shall leave. Take care…”

After saying this, she stood up to leave.

Gu Fengchen hastily said, “Lady Bai, don’t go…” He became anxious, causing his blood and qi to surge, and he began to cough, with blood spilling from the corner of his mouth again. Bai Jingjing was also startled and quickly wiped away the blood for him. “If you want me not to leave, then I won’t…”

Gu Fengchen said, “Right now, though my mind is in chaos, I must not deny what I have said. Since I promised to marry you, I will keep my vow.”

Bai Jingjing’s face flushed with a rosy glow, making her appear exceptionally charming. She gently leaned her head on Gu Fengchen’s shoulder and said, “Do you really still want me?” Gu Fengchen replied, “Why wouldn’t I?” Bai Jingjing said, “I know you are a magnanimous hero who upholds justice, but do you know what kind of person I am?” Gu Fengchen said, “I only know… you are my wife.” Bai Jingjing moved her lips close and gave him a light kiss on the cheek.

It was the first time Gu Fengchen had been kissed by a woman; his heart pounded wildly, and he almost spat out blood again, letting out an involuntary groan.

Bai Jingjing smiled seductively but, fearing it would worsen his internal injuries, became proper and stopped being affectionate. She sat back at the head of the bed and said, “My nickname is White Scorpion, as you know, but why am I called White Scorpion? Naturally, it’s because I am ruthless and venomous. In the words of Jianghu people, my heart is like a serpent. I have done many harmful deeds in the past.”

Gu Fengchen listened and did not react positively or negatively but said calmly, “There is a Buddhist saying: drop the butcher’s knife and become a Buddha instantly. Buddha and demon are separated only by a hair’s breadth.” Bai Jingjing asked urgently, “Do you think I can also transform from a demon into a Buddha?” Gu Fengchen did not answer but instead said, “When I was at Shaolin Temple, there was a senior monk of the Guang generation named Venerable Monk Guangmo; before becoming a monk, he was called Wangmo. His deeds could truly fill books, yet suddenly for some reason, he had a great awakening and joined Shaolin. From then on, he spread kindness throughout the Martial World until he died defending the temple. Up to now, people remember not the great villain Wangmo who killed without blinking, but the esteemed monk Guangmo. Are the evil deeds you have done greater than his?”

Bai Jingjing pondered this. “No, not that much. But I fear I might still do bad things in the future. Then, you wouldn’t want me anymore, would you?” Gu Fengchen asked back, “Why would you do bad things?” Bai Jingjing said, “Presumably because… I was born a villain.”

Gu Fengchen said, “At the beginning of life, human nature is inherently good. No one is born a villain. It’s only because of great upheavals in fate that one becomes cruel-hearted. Rest assured, if you ever want to do anything evil in the future, I will stop you.”

Bai Jingjing giggled. “How will you stop me? If you must kill me to prevent it, would you kill me?”

Gu Fengchen was not expecting such a question and thought for a moment before saying, “I am your husband; I would never kill you. Nor would I let you do evil deeds.”

Bai Jingjing took his hand and murmured softly, “I am truly glad I met you. Heaven has shown me exceptional grace.”

Suddenly, she knelt on the ground, clasped her hands together, and prayed to heaven. “I, Bai Jingjing, swear to heavens: from now on, I shall follow my husband Gu Fengchen, devote myself to doing good, and abstain from evil deeds. If I violate this, may I suffer the torments of boiling oil and burning fire, never to be human again.”

Gu Fengchen heard her take this solemn oath and felt deeply moved. After all, it is easy to lead people to evil, but hard to persuade them to good. To bring a wicked and twisted heart back to righteousness is superior to building a seven-tiered pagoda.

After finishing her vow, Bai Jingjing sat back at the head of the bed and gently stroked Gu Fengchen’s head and neck. Softly, she asked, “Does it still hurt?”

Gu Fengchen felt highly awkward under her gaze and changed the subject. “Why did the Four Great Clans poison you? What promise did you make with them? Why did they break it?”

Bai Jingjing spat, cursing. “These hypocrites, calling themselves righteous people—not a single one is any good. This must be explained slowly. I arrived late to that West Lake treasure-hunting event and was heading back when I saw the Kill Order. Upon inquiry, I learned that Zhuge Ren had died in Qingmiao Town. So I had an idea and started tracking you from there, intending to capture you and hand you over to the Four Great Clans. Because at that time, I fancied Zhuge Ren’s brother and wished to marry into Zhuge Family. But you know, Old Man Zhuge would never accept someone with a notorious reputation like me. So I aimed to earn merit. I sent someone with a letter saying I would deliver you alive to them for their judgment, on condition that I marry into Zhuge Family. To my surprise, they agreed. I was overjoyed and began searching everywhere for you. You know the rest.”

Gu Fengchen said, “But after you actually brought me to them, they started to renege.”

Bai Jingjing said, “Yes. That day, someone took me to the rear residence and offered me a cup of tea, saying the second son of Zhuge Family would see me soon. I was very happy and didn’t suspect a thing. I drank that cup of tea, but the poison took effect almost immediately. If not for you, I would have died long ago.”

Here, she asked with eyes full of affection. “If I had died a moment earlier that time, you surely would have thought, ‘That evil woman harms others and harms herself—she deserves it!’ Right?”

Gu Fengchen replied, “Perhaps even worse thoughts than that came to mind.” Bai Jingjing said, “Now, if it could happen again, would you still save me?” Gu Fengchen remained silent for a while before answering. “I don’t know. At that moment, I thought I was about to die. You know, when people are close to death, their words are kind and their deeds are kind. If I hadn’t been injured at that time, my thoughts might have been different. This is the truth; whether you dislike hearing it or not, that is what I say.”

Bai Jingjing laughed. “I love hearing it. I love hearing whatever you say. Before, I heard too many insincere words. As long as you speak the truth, I will always listen.”

Gu Fengchen said, “But I… don’t love you. I mean, the time I’ve spent with you is too short; I don’t know if I will come to like you in the future. But don’t fear—since I have married you, I will not abandon you.”

Bai Jingjing’s expression dimmed. “When we escaped danger, you called me Linger. You must have mistaken me for someone else. Is this Linger… the one you love?”

Gu Fengchen felt heartbroken. “She treated me very well, but I wounded her. I think I not only hurt her physically but also her heart. She will never forgive me.”

Bai Jingjing said, “But you still love her.” Gu Fengchen said, “I just… can’t forget her.”

Hearing this, Bai Jingjing also appeared sorrowful but forced a smile anyway. “I understand… I just want you to know, no matter how you treat me, I will follow you wholeheartedly. Unless you drive me away.”

Their eyes met, and the gaze between them was complex, yet sincere from both.

Unable to bear the awkwardness, Gu Fengchen asked, “By the way, do you know who saved us? At that time, I was unconscious and only saw a large bird; I thought it was an envoy sent by the Queen Mother to take us to heaven…”

Bai Jingjing stifled a laugh. “You think too highly. It was an eminent master who saved us. After roaming the Jianghu for so long, I hadn’t met him before, and likely neither had you…”

Just then, a soft murmur came from outside the door: “He is different from you. In fact, we have only met a few days ago.”

The door was pushed open, and two people entered—a man and a woman. The woman was dressed in snow-white robes, indeed Lady Xueyi. The man was seated in a wheelchair, pushed inside by Lady Xueyi. He was the mysterious white-headed man Gu Fengchen had seen in Hangzhou.

Seeing them both, a ripple of emotion stirred in Gu Fengchen’s heart. He blurted out, “It’s you… you’ve been following me.”

The White-Headed Man chuckled. “Correct. Since our treasure traveled with you, we felt uneasy. Escorting you in secret is only reasonable.” Gu Fengchen fell silent. Had they not secretly followed, he and Bai Jingjing would already be dead by the river.

Lady Xueyi pushed the wheelchair to Gu Fengchen’s bedside. She offered Bai Jingjing a faint smile. “They have matters to discuss. We women should not be present. Come to my room. We women can talk about women’s matters.” Her voice, though gentle, carried an undeniable force that discouraged disobedience. Bai Jingjing glanced at Gu Fengchen, seemingly seeking his assent. Lady Xueyi added, “Don’t worry. He won’t run away.”

Bai Jingjing flushed. “I’m going then…” she whispered. Gu Fengchen said, “Go and rest for a while. I’m fine.” Only then did Bai Jingjing follow Lady Xueyi out of the room.

The White-Headed Man reached out and checked Gu Fengchen’s pulse, his expression unchanging. “Had you not cultivated the Heaven-Defying Divine Art, that palm strike from Zhuge Xianyun would have ended your life on the spot.” Gu Fengchen asked, “You know he was the one who injured me?” The White-Headed Man withdrew his fingers. “He used the Zhuge Family’s secret technique: Drifting Snow and Flowing Cloud Palm. The palm was imbued with the internal energy of the Three Flowers Gathering at the Crown. This energy is extremely fierce; a single strike releases three distinct forces: a direct strike, a side spin, and even a central explosion. If it strikes a person’s chest or abdomen, their internal organs would be shattered. Fortunately, your Heaven-Defying Divine Art protected you, preventing instant death.”

Gu Fengchen remarked, “What a formidable palm force… Though truly more formidable were his adaptability and moves. I can be certain that he is the most powerful master I have ever encountered.”

The White-Headed Man smiled. “He is undoubtedly thinking the same. Of everyone struck by his Three Flowers Gathering palm force, you alone managed to escape alive.”

Gu Fengchen asked, “Did you come just to tell me this?” The White-Headed Man replied, “All conversations require a preface. Our ancestors spent thousands of years teaching us how to make discourse flow smoothly, avoiding abruptness.” Gu Fengchen gave a slight smile. “In my view, we can proceed to the main point now.”

The White-Headed Man nodded. “I agree. But before that, I still wish to tell you one thing.” Gu Fengchen said, “I’m listening.” The White-Headed Man stated, “Your injuries are severe. You need to rest in bed for a full month to recover fully. Therefore, it’s best you do not leave during this month.”

Gu Fengchen replied, “Where could I possibly go? The entire Jianghu is plastered with my Kill Order.”

The White-Headed Man laughed. “Rest easy. No one will find you here.” Gu Fengchen said, “I owe you a life.” The White-Headed Man nodded. “Correct. And you will have the chance to repay this favor soon, so no need to dwell on it.”

A faint smile touched the corner of Gu Fengchen’s mouth. “You saved me… for a reason.” The White-Headed Man answered, “Indeed. Just like your reason for saving Lady Bai.” Gu Fengchen asked, “So, speak. What do you want me to do? Seek that treasure again?”

The White-Headed Man, however, gently shook his head. “Wrong guess.” Gu Fengchen was taken aback. Though not exceptionally quick-witted, he could have sworn the topic would circle back to their last discussion. Finding it wasn’t left him puzzled. “Then what do you want me to do?”

The White-Headed Man slowly articulated a few words. “I want you… to become the Leader of the Red Lotus Sect.”

Upon hearing this, Gu Fengchen almost leaped from the bed. He felt a surge of blood rush to his head again. Gritting his teeth, he struggled to calm himself, but could not stifle the exclamation: “What are you saying! Become the Leader of the Red Lotus Sect?”

The White-Headed Man inquired coolly, “Do you think I’m joking?”

“Not just joking,” Gu Fengchen retorted, staring straight at him, “it’s the biggest joke imaginable.” He added, “They already have a Cult Leader.” The White-Headed Man acknowledged, “I know. But she hasn’t formally ascended to the position yet.” Gu Fengchen pressed, “You want me to kill her and take her place?”

The White-Headed Man responded, “Taking her place is the idea. Killing? Not necessarily.”

Gu Fengchen demanded, “Explain it clearly. What exactly do you mean?”

The White-Headed Man elaborated, “According to the Red Lotus Sect’s rules, the ascension of a Cult Leader must be ceremonially held on Mount Huang. One ritual is indispensable: the presentation of the Sect’s Credential Object. However, in the past three generations of Cult Leaders ascending within the Red Lotus Sect, this ritual has been omitted. The reason is simple: the Sect’s Credential Object was lost; it is no longer within the Red Lotus Sect.”

Gu Fengchen questioned, “How could something so vital be lost? The Cult Leader entrusted with it must have been terribly careless.” The White-Headed Man countered, “It wasn’t carelessness. While cultivating the Heaven-Defying Divine Art, he suddenly perished, and in the aftermath, the Credential Object was stolen by one of his close attendants.” Gu Fengchen asked, “Did this attendant seek to be Cult Leader?” The White-Headed Man shook his head. “With that attendant’s level of martial skill, he wouldn’t rank among even the Eight Steeds, much less become Cult Leader. He stole the object on another’s orders.” Gu Fengchen deduced, “Presumably someone from the orthodox Jianghu?”

The White-Headed Man corrected him, “Wrong again. The thief… belonged to the White Lotus Sect.”

Gu Fengchen started. “White Lotus Sect? Isn’t that the predecessor of the Red Lotus Sect?”

He had once heard Ling Ling explain that the Red Lotus Sect was a later name change; it was previously called the White Lotus Sect.

The White-Headed Man nodded. “Correct. That information likely came from someone within the Red Lotus Sect, but it’s incomplete. Why did the White Lotus Sect change its name?” Gu Fengchen ventured, “Suppression by the authorities?” The White-Headed Man said, “That was merely the surface. The true reason was that the White Lotus Sect at the time split into two factions.”

Gu Fengchen frowned deeply. “Are you saying the White Lotus Sect split into a Red and a White sect?”

The White-Headed Man smiled. “A correct guess this time.”

Gu Fengchen pressed, “Then why is it only the Red Lotus Sect known in Jianghu, while the White Lotus Sect seems unheard of?” The White-Headed Man explained, “The White Lotus Sect has always existed. However, its members operate under other, public identities.” Gu Fengchen asked, “Why would that be? What are they hiding from?”

The White-Headed Man replied, “Naturally, they are hiding from the Red Lotus Sect. Since the split, the Red Sect has sought to eradicate the White Sect entirely. Outnumbered and outmatched, the White Sect suffered catastrophic losses in a bloody battle atop Xianren Peak. Their elite warriors were virtually wiped out. The survivors escaped down Mount Huang through pre-dug tunnels, vanishing from the Jianghu. Fearing extermination by the Red Lotus Sect, they dared not openly use the White Lotus Sect name again. Yet, in secret, they have been steadily rebuilding their strength, awaiting a chance for resurgence.”

Suddenly, Gu Fengchen asked bluntly, “You know all this in such detail. You must be one of them—a member of the White Lotus Sect yourself?”

The White-Headed Man chuckled. “Well guessed. I am indeed the current Leader of the White Lotus Sect.”

Gu Fengchen stated, “But you’ve never appeared in the Jianghu under any other identity.” The White-Headed Man replied, “You simply didn’t know. Over a decade ago, I was the Deputy Leader of the Mount Tai Sect!”

Hearing this, something suddenly occurred to Gu Fengchen. He glanced at the White-Headed Man’s legs and blurted out, “Are you… Ying Tian’ao?!”

The name shocked even Gu Fengchen as he uttered it.

The White-Headed Man was also taken aback, clearly not expecting that name to be spoken. For an instant, a complex expression flickered in his eyes – seeming like hatred, like a sigh, but more like resignation. He simply said faintly, “I didn’t think anyone would still remember that name.”

Many things flashed through Gu Fengchen’s mind. The day he was captured by Qin Tangguan, taken to an abandoned house on Mount Taiyue, he had heard Guo Jiangfeng, the leader of the Long River Gang, mention this man. He spoke only of his exceptionally high martial skills, impossible to place within any known school, who had become the Mount Tai Sect’s Deputy Leader. Later, one night, Ying Tian’ao came to Mount Taiyue with a woman, pursued by a top expert of the Red Lotus Sect. A great battle ensued. That woman was Lady Xueyi, and the Red Lotus Sect expert was their then-Leader, Ling Yufeng.

After that battle, Ying Tian’ao vanished without a trace. Ling Ling had said her father, Ling Yufeng, struck him off a cliff to his death. How was he alive now!

Gu Fengchen asked, “Are you truly Ying Tian’ao?”

The White-Headed Man nodded slowly. “Yes, it is I.”

Gu Fengchen said, “Then Ying Lian…” Ying Tian’ao confirmed, “She is indeed my daughter.” Gu Fengchen drew a long breath. “You truly didn’t die.” Ying Tian’ao explained, “At that time, I was no match for Ling Yufeng. But we were on Mount Taiyue, and I knew the terrain intimately. So I deliberately let him strike me over the cliff. If I hadn’t, he would have killed me with his own hands. There were many vines and small trees growing sideways below the cliff edge. It was a desperate move, forced upon me. Even so, my leg bones were shattered in the fall, and I could no longer stand.” Gu Fengchen stated, “So all these years, you have been seeking revenge against the Red Lotus Sect.”

Ying Tian’ao smiled proudly. “I seek vengeance, yes. But not for personal grudges. The Red Lotus Sect owes us a blood debt. Eventually, it must be repaid.”

Gu Fengchen said, “So you want me to seize the position of Red Lotus Leader.” Ying Tian’ao replied, “This time, you won’t fight alone. I will give you many helpers.”

Hearing this, Gu Fengchen suddenly recalled the conversation he had overheard between those Jianghu men that day. He blurted out, “Could it be… you are that third force?”

This seemingly random exclamation puzzled Ying Tian’ao. “What are you talking about?”

Gu Fengchen pressed, “You’ve been secretly recruiting experts, building your strength, haven’t you?” Ying Tian’ao nodded. “That much is true. If you categorize my White Lotus Sect as the third force, I won’t object. After all, with the Red Lotus Sect and the Four Great Clans locked in open conflict now, my White Lotus Sect rising in the shadows is at the perfect moment.”

Given Gu Fengchen’s nature, he truly had no wish to be drawn into such bloody conflicts. Whether Red Lotus or White Lotus, it had nothing to do with him. He said, “What if I refuse?” Ying Tian’ao seemed prepared for the question. “That’s up to you. If you don’t want to do it, I won’t force you. Recover from your wounds, and you may leave.”

He then smiled. “You’re just regaining consciousness today. Don’t talk too much. Conserve your strength. I will come see you again.” Without any visible movement of his hands or feet, the wheelchair beneath him turned and ground its way out the door.

Gu Fengchen felt utterly exhausted and drifted into sleep amidst a lingering fragrance.

From then on, Gu Fengchen stayed put. Not because he wished to, but because he truly couldn’t rise. Zhuge Xianyun’s palm strike had been devastating. Only by the fourth day did he stop coughing up blood, but he still couldn’t exert any strength. Lady Xueyi told Bai Jingjing these were the most critical days of recovery for someone with internal injuries; utmost caution was necessary.

Bai Jingjing stayed constantly by Gu Fengchen’s side, talking to him, feeding him medicine and food, and even attending to his most intimate physical needs. Gu Fengchen was always embarrassed, but Bai Jingjing would always say she came from a hard life, did plenty of dirty, heavy chores since her childhood, and didn’t mind. Besides, Gu Fengchen had saved her life and was her husband. It was entirely natural for a woman to look after her husband.

Every time she said this, tears would inadvertently flow down Bai Jingjing’s cheeks. She told Gu Fengchen they were not tears of sorrow, but tears of happiness.

Gu Fengchen knew full well he did not love her. Yet, after so many days of her constant care, he felt that Bai Jingjing truly wasn’t a bad person. Her previous actions were just a means of survival in the Jianghu. Once she no longer needed such methods, she quickly reverted to her original self.

A few more days passed, and Gu Fengchen was finally able to get out of bed. As Bai Jingjing supported him, moving from the room into the sunlight and he felt the warmth once more, he caught the musty odor clinging to his own clothes.

Gu Fengchen closed his eyes to adjust to the strong light. Bai Jingjing considerately helped him sit down on a bench beneath a tree, then took a comb and stood behind him, gently combing his hair.

A white cloud drifted slowly overhead. Sunlight bathed the small courtyard. No human voices could be heard, only the occasional calls of unnamed birds among the branches. The bamboo planted in the courtyard was emerald-green and lush. A breeze stirred now and then, rustling the bamboo leaves with a soft shushing sound, adding to the serenity and tranquility.

Bai Jingjing slowly gathered Gu Fengchen’s hair. “I think if…” She trailed off, her face flushing red. Gu Fengchen prompted, “If what?” A sweet smile spread across Bai Jingjing’s face. “If this were our home, how wonderful that would be. No clan vendettas, no deception and treachery, no struggles for fame or gain. Just you and me together. And perhaps I… could even add… one more to the family. Then everything would be just right.”

Gu Fengchen understood her meaning. Heartache swept over him. This scene wasn’t something he hadn’t imagined – only it wasn’t with Bai Jingjing, but another girl. The one who had wounded him, and whom he had wounded. However, speaking this truth now was utterly unthinkable; it would ruin the moment completely.

He could only pat Bai Jingjing’s hand and say mildly, “That is merely a distant dream. This vast world has no place where I can stand my ground. To live such a life, perhaps one can only leave the Central Plains.” Bai Jingjing said brightly, “That’s fine then! We can go overseas, to the frontiers, to the grasslands – anywhere those warriors of the Central Plains can’t find you.”

Gu Fengchen said, “I just want to go home.”

Bai Jingjing asked, “Where is your home?” Gu Fengchen replied, “By the Yi River.” Bai Jingjing sighed. “That won’t do. It’s not too far from either the Twin Dragon Fort or Jianxian Manor. You’d be far too easily found.”

Gu Fengchen sighed, a knot of bitterness twisting inside him. It seemed his hope of peacefully working as a blacksmith at home was impossible.

Yet another thought struck him: that former “home” was, to him, merely a house. He had no family there, few friends, little interaction with fellow villagers. He had even felt somewhat like an “outsider” there. If he had to explain why he couldn’t forget that “home,” perhaps it could only be attributed to a sense of nostalgia for his native place.

That was his roots.

As he was thinking, Lady Xueyi pushed Ying Tian’ao in again, followed by a girl who was none other than Ying Lian.

The moment Gu Fengchen saw Ying Lian, he immediately brightened up. Ying Lian spotted Gu Fengchen, raced over, stopped before him, looked at his pale face, and asked with concern, “Brother Gu, are you feeling better now?” Gu Fengchen nodded, “Rest assured. Your brother here was a blacksmith, his body tougher than iron.”

Ying Lian nodded vigorously, “I knew it. Brother would be fine. But Mother wouldn’t let me come see you earlier, afraid too much talking would drain your vital energy. She only allowed me today. You won’t blame me, will you?”

Gu Fengchen smiled, “How could I? It was for my own good.”

They had traveled together for a time. Though young, Ying Lian was extremely clever. She knew Gu Fengchen had risked his life to save her, an act of great loyalty. Seeing him now felt like reuniting with family, as if she had endless things she wished to say.

Lady Xueyi said, “Lian’er, go tidy up your brother’s room properly. Take out his clothes and bedding to wash, then air them.” Ying Lian hurriedly agreed and ran inside.

Ying Tian’ao took a red invitation card from his bosom and handed it to Gu Fengchen. Gu Fengchen asked, “For me?” Ying Tian’ao replied, “No, it’s for the Iron Fan Sect.”

Gu Fengchen paused, “Iron Fan Sect?”

Bai Jingjing, seeing his confusion, explained, “The Iron Fan Sect is a martial arts faction in Henan, not particularly renowned. All its members use iron fans. Their martial art is called ‘Overturning Yin and Yang, Reversing Qian and Kun,’ comprising sixteen styles of fan techniques. Their sect leader, I believe, is surnamed Li.”

Gu Fengchen looked directly at Ying Tian’ao and said, “I am not from the Iron Fan Sect.” Ying Tian’ao replied, “You could take a look.” Gu Fengchen took it, opened it, skimmed it, then knit his brows. “On the Double Ninth Festival, the Red Lotus Sect will hold the Cult Leader’s Succession Ceremony at Bright Summit, inviting martial heroes from all under heaven to bear witness.”

He closed the card and returned it to Ying Tian’ao, asking, “What does this have to do with me?”

Ying Tian’ao answered, “It might, if you wish to go.”

Gu Fengchen stated with absolute firmness, “I do not wish to go.” Ying Tian’ao wasn’t surprised, having anticipated this response. He smiled faintly as he put the invitation away, “I knew you would say that.” Signaling Lady Xueyi to wheel him away, he turned to leave. Gu Fengchen watched him go, a thread of unease coiling in his heart, though he didn’t stop him.

As Ying Tian’ao neared the doorway, he added nonchalantly, “If you don’t go, the Red Lotus Sect will have no Cult Leader.” Gu Fengchen froze, “What do you mean?” Ying Tian’ao stated, “I haven’t told you yet. The young lady poised to ascend as Cult Leader of the Red Lotus Sect… is dying.”

These words struck Gu Fengchen’s head like a thunderbolt. He felt instantly dizzy, his internal injury threatening to resurface. He demanded urgently, “Speak plainly! Ling… how is she?”

Ying Tian’ao replied, “That has nothing to do with you. It’s a matter for the Red Lotus Sect.” Still moving towards the exit, he was abruptly blocked as Gu Fengchen, rage giving him strength, surged to his feet despite his injury. Staring down at Ying Tian’ao, his voice low and intense, Gu Fengchen declared, “I want to know.”

Bai Jingjing rushed over to support Gu Fengchen’s teetering frame.

Gu Fengchen’s face flushed crimson, his eyes bloodshot – an expression truly alarming. Bai Jingjing, terrified, entreated Ying Tian’ao, “Senior, please tell him! Otherwise, his internal injury will worsen!”

Ying Tian’ao offered a slight smile. “Why the urgency? My calm demeanor should tell you the situation isn’t dire. Why don’t we all sit down and discuss this slowly?”

Bai Jingjing helped the trembling Gu Fengchen sink back onto the long bench. Lady Xueyi wheeled Ying Tian’ao closer. Ying Tian’ao began, “This invitation arrived two months ago. The reason I show it to you only now is to inform you that disturbances have occurred within the Red Lotus Sect.”

Gu Fengchen cut in, “Was Leader Ling injured?”

Ying Tian’ao shook his head. “Her injury was minor. That stab wound you gave her was merely superficial; it’s nothing serious.” Puzzled, Gu Fengchen pressed, “Then why did you say she’s dying?”

Seeing his deep concern, Bai Jingjing felt a pang of jealousy – understanding that Leader Ling was the person Gu Fengchen treasured most. But the thought flickered through her mind: they had known each other first; she was the interloper later. She couldn’t rightly blame him. Then, a conflicting wave of triumph rose. Despite his care for Leader Ling, he had married her. This thought renewed her pride.

Putting aside her turbulent thoughts, she focused on Ying Tian’ao’s words. “Before she left Hangzhou, she was poisoned by a peculiar substance. It is not lethal nor inherently harmful – it induces a deep, unbreakable slumber. If left untended, the victim dies of thirst within ten days. Even if meticulously cared for, unable to swallow solids and fed only liquids, the victim lives at most… two months.”

Gu Fengchen was aghast. “So, she just waits for death? But the Red Lotus Sect commands the Gu Sect! Its Gate Master, Nalan Chunyi, can dissolve all poisons. Leader Ling will surely be fine!”

Ying Tian’ao countered, “Nalan excels at antidotes, but Leader Ling was not poisoned. Moreover, this drug, ‘Drunken Blue Conch,’ hasn’t been seen in the Jianghu for forty to fifty years. Clever as Nalan may be, it’s certain she has neither encountered it nor knows its properties, rendering her powerless to counteract it. Counting the days, the drug took effect over ten days ago. Leader Ling does not have much time.”

Suspicion flared in Gu Fengchen. “How do you know all this? Did you administer the poison?” Ying Tian’ao smiled without answering. “It’s already August. If no one rescues Leader Ling, she likely won’t survive until the Double Ninth Festival. I do possess a cure, but I lack anyone to assist. Alas, fate itself intervenes!” Gu Fengchen clenched his jaw in fury. “You harmed her first, and now you play games? Ancestral grudges lie between her forebears and you, but she has done you no wrong! Such pettiness is unbecoming of a great man!”

Rage vibrated in his voice, righteous and fierce. Were he not grievously injured and unable to wield his strength, he’d have struck out without hesitation.

Unperturbed, Ying Tian’ao merely chuckled. “You wrong me. I did not administer the drug.” Gu Fengchen demanded, “Who did?” Ying Tian’ao answered, “I do not know.” Gu Fengchen’s frustration mounted. “You mock me!” Ying Tian’ao replied calmly, “Patience. While I don’t know who poisoned her, I do know the antidote.”

Skepticism laced Gu Fengchen’s voice, “Say it.”

Ying Tian’ao explained, “The drug is called ‘Drunken Blue Conch,’ concocted from the nectar of a rare flower named ‘Drunken Snail Fragrance.’ Only one place in this world cultivates it.”

Gu Fengchen urgently asked, “Where?”

Ying Tian’ao said, “The Nangong Family at Dongting Lake.”

Gu Fengchen said, “I don’t believe what you said. You didn’t witness this yourself either.”

Ying Tian’ao said, “I don’t need to see; someone reports to me constantly about the Red Lotus Sect.” He deliberately lowered his voice, “I have a spy.”

Gu Fengchen was startled, “The Red Lotus Sect just returned to the Central Plains, and you already planted a spy?”

Ying Tian’ao smiled without answering, only saying, “To cure the Drunken Moonlight Dew, simply use the root of the Drunken Snail Flower, boil it into a soup, and administer it every third hour.”

Gu Fengchen coldly said, “Don’t you wish to eliminate the Red Lotus Sect and restore the prestige of the White Lotus Sect? If Leader Ling dies, wouldn’t that suit your interests perfectly!”

Ying Tian’ao said, “Her death brings me no benefit; the Red Lotus Sect has already prepared contingencies, and Ling Yufeng is no fool. Do you think he would stake all his hopes on his daughter? That would underestimate Ling Yufeng too much. I want Leader Ling to survive, for then the White Lotus Sect can retake Mount Huang. Young man, to navigate the Martial World, cunning is paramount. You should consult your wife more about this in the future.”

Finished speaking, he signaled to Lady Xueyi to push the wheelchair and left.

At that moment, Lian’er had also finished cleaning the room and made a funny face at Gu Fengchen, then went off to wash the bedding and clothes while carrying them.

Gu Fengchen remained silent for a long while, then said, “His words were correct.”

Bai Jingjing said, “Not entirely. To journey through the Martial World, one must employ cunning, yet if used too much, in the end, one gains nothing.”

Gu Fengchen said, “I never employed cunning against anyone before, and I still gained nothing.”

Bai Jingjing smiled sweetly, “But you gained one person’s true love. You should know, before meeting you, I had never loved anyone. And I feel that in this lifetime, I won’t truly love anyone else.”

Hearing her first sentence, Gu Fengchen was deeply shaken inside; he didn’t listen to what came after. What he had gained was not one person’s true love; between Ling Ling and Bai Jingjing, neither seemed false.

What was happier than gaining one person’s true love? One thing was certain—it couldn’t be gaining two people’s true love. Far from bringing happiness, it might even become a calamity.

He turned his head and gazed straight at Bai Jingjing, his expression very serious.

Bai Jingjing blushed fiercely from his stare and found it strange herself; long ago in the Martial World, she had often been gazed at by handsome youths, and at those times, she felt only scorn or contempt.

Gu Fengchen’s looks were far inferior to those young masters, but his eyes always revealed a charisma that captivated women; it seemed both transcendent and stubborn, yet also carrying a hint of recklessness.

Being watched by such a man, Bai Jingjing felt dizzy and clumsy for the first time in her life.

She avoided his gaze and chuckled foolishly, “What are you staring at…”

Gu Fengchen said earnestly, “I need to tell you something.”

Bai Jingjing said, “Say it then, no need to keep those thieving eyes fixed on me!”

After saying this, she lowered her head shyly, like a little girl.

This seemed to be the first time she had ever truly felt shy, without a trace of pretense.

Gu Fengchen said, “I must go save that Leader Ling.”

Bai Jingjing said, “I know. As soon as Elder Ying brought it up, seeing how anxious you looked, I knew you’d go.”

Gu Fengchen said, “Presumably you can guess; this Leader Ling has something to do with me…”

Bai Jingjing said, “I also know. This Leader Ling is the person you called Linger when we escaped danger, isn’t she?”

Gu Fengchen said, “Yes, her name is Ling Ling. Saying this, I imagine it won’t make you happy.”

Bai Jingjing looked downcast, “If you can’t forget her, that shows your true nature, a true hero. I’d be delighted for you.”

Gu Fengchen said, “Look at my eyes…”

Bai Jingjing had no choice but to meet his gaze; Gu Fengchen smiled faintly, “Though I know little about women, I understand that no woman wouldn’t care about such matters. No need to hide it from me.”

Bai Jingjing sighed, “I do care. But… you met her before me; I have no right to interfere, and I don’t wish to. If you’re going to save her, I’ll go with you.”

Gu Fengchen said, “No. This trip is to fetch the antidote from the Nangong Family; it’s too dangerous…”

Bai Jingjing said, “Could it be more dangerous than on that high platform that day?”

Gu Fengchen said, “I don’t want you to come because I’m afraid…”

Bai Jingjing said, “You fear that once we save that Leader Ling and she sees us together, it will devastate her too much.”

Gu Fengchen fell silent, then after a long pause said, “I hurt her deeply; she may not forgive me, and that’s one thing. I fear she might harm you.”

Hearing this, Bai Jingjing was deeply moved; she sat beside Gu Fengchen and leaned her head toward his chest.

Gu Fengchen instinctively moved away; Bai Jingjing felt this, her heart aching, and slowly sat upright again, saying, “No one has ever truly worried for me before. But do you know? I genuinely don’t want to be apart from you for a single moment. I fear… that if you don’t see me, you’ll slowly forget me, after all, we’ve only known each other for a few days, and I’m such a… bad woman…”

As she spoke, tears streamed down her face.

Gu Fengchen said, “All right then, we’ll go together.”

Bai Jingjing smiled through her tears, “Be sure to keep your word; don’t go back on what you said.”

Gu Fengchen said, “When have I ever broken my word?”

Bai Jingjing stood up, “Then I’ll go pack right away and rent a carriage. After all, with your current condition, you can’t ride a horse.”

Gu Fengchen said, “Thank you for your trouble.”

Bai Jingjing laughed, “Your business is my business.”

Gu Fengchen said, “Go attend to that. I need some time alone to think.”

Watching Bai Jingjing leave, the courtyard deserted except for him, Gu Fengchen couldn’t clearly define what he felt inside.

Most of it was worry for Ling Ling, yet he had no idea how they would meet again when she saw him; taking a wife he didn’t love to meet the one he loved, he dared not dwell on it.

Finally, he consoled himself; the Nangong Family at Dongting Lake was like a dragon’s den or a tiger’s lair, especially now that he was an enemy of the entire Martial World, and surviving to leave the Nangong Family was uncertain.

He decided not to worry about what came after just yet.

By nearly noon, someone brought a meal, and Bai Jingjing returned as well, saying everything was prepared for them to leave at any time.

Lady Xueyi and Lian’er joined them for the meal.

Fearing complications, Gu Fengchen dared not linger long and was eager to depart.

Lady Xueyi ordered some gold bars and assorted small silver coins to be brought for travel expenses.

Gu Fengchen didn’t thank her, only telling Lian’er, “Live well at home; once I’ve settled this matter, I’ll come back to see you.”

After all these events, Lian’er had matured greatly and didn’t cry, instead cheering Gu Fengchen on; this pleased him immensely.

With everything sorted, Bai Jingjing helped Gu Fengchen into the carriage.

Gu Fengchen saw that the inside was thickly padded with a brocade quilt to cushion bumps and prevent worsening his injuries during the journey; it showed Bai Jingjing had planned exceptionally well.

The driver was naturally Lady Xueyi’s trusted man; she handed him several carrier pigeons so he could report news constantly.

The driver repeatedly agreed, flicked his whip loudly in the air, and the carriage rattled off on the road.

After a short distance, Bai Jingjing recalled something, saying, “Dear, the whole Martial World is searching for you now. After that battle in Shangqiu, I’ve probably become a target too. Traveling like this, even inside the carriage, if some careless fellow stops us and peeks inside, won’t our tracks be exposed?”

Gu Fengchen thought about it and agreed, then asked, “Then let’s cover our faces, so they can’t recognize us.”

Bai Jingjing shook her head, “Covering our faces inside the carriage would only raise suspicion. If people see, they’d demand we remove the veils, exposing us nonetheless.”

Gu Fengchen said, “Then we’ll have to disguise ourselves. But do you know how to?”

Bai Jingjing said, “Not really skilled, but…” She grinned cheerfully. “Taking care of you, it’s good enough.” As she spoke, Bai Jingjing got to work, mixing some ash and flour together. She smeared Gu Fengchen’s face white, then dotted it with pockmark-like spots. After busy work for a while, Gu Fengchen picked up a mirror to look and couldn’t help but be startled. He saw that he had turned into a face covered in large pockmarks, truly looking as if a leather shoe had stomped in the mud, or a pomegranate skin turned inside out. One glance was enough to make the heart quail.

Gu Fengchen threw the mirror aside. “It’s a bit frightening. If I couldn’t see myself, that would be one thing, but you have to face this face every day. I’m afraid you won’t be able to eat.” Bai Jingjing laughed. “Then I’ll close my eyes and desperately imagine you as a pretty boy.” Saying this, she began to disguise herself. She made her hair look speckled with gray and added some wrinkles. At first glance, she already appeared to be an old woman.

After finishing her makeup, Bai Jingjing also looked in the mirror and sighed. “Ten years from now, I’ll probably look this ugly.” Gu Fengchen said, “Then I’ll desperately remember how you look right now.” Hearing this, a sweet feeling blossomed in Bai Jingjing’s heart, and she gave Gu Fengchen a captivating smile. Gu Fengchen nearly vomited. “Don’t smile. An old woman making flirtatious gestures is really unbearable.”

Bai Jingjing let out a soft, annoyed sound and kicked his thigh. “You’re so mean…”

After joking with her like this, Gu Fengchen’s heart suddenly remembered Ling Ling again, causing a pang of sour melancholy and dulling his gaze. Bai Jingjing noticed. “Thinking of her again?” Gu Fengchen mumbled vaguely. Bai Jingjing said, “Think of her if you want to. Don’t be afraid to say it. I’m not going to blame you. In fact, I quite like it when you think of her.” Gu Fengchen was stunned. “Is that true? From what I know, women aren’t usually like this.”

Bai Jingjing said solemnly, “I also know women are often horribly jealous. If I had treated you well from the beginning, and then you were thinking of another woman, I’d be angry and jealous too. But the fact is, even after the way I harmed you, you’ve been able to let it go. On the brink of death, you even fulfilled my wish. To be your wife for one day is already a blessing cultivated from my previous life. I’m very satisfied. Why would I begrudge anything else? Besides, between you and that young lady, there must be many things worth remembering. If you forgot them all instantly and never thought of her, I’d actually blame you for being shallow-hearted.”

Hearing her words, Gu Fengchen felt for the first time in his life that women were truly the strangest things under heaven.

The two talked and chatted, finding a measure of harmony. When it grew dark, they stayed at an inn. The carriage driver acted exactly like one who had driven for years. Gu Fengchen and Bai Jingjing took one room. Bai Jingjing still meticulously attended to Gu Fengchen, and when it came time to sleep, she insisted on sleeping on the floor, giving the bed to Gu Fengchen.

After travelling like this for several days, Gu Fengchen finally fully recovered from his internal injuries. Normally, such severe injuries wouldn’t heal so quickly. But he had trained in the Heaven-Defying Divine Art, which excelled in mobilizing the body’s latent energy, greatly benefiting body and mind. His remarkably swift recovery shocked even Bai Jingjing.

Along the journey, they encountered many people of the Jianghu (Martial World). True enough, some rough-handed individuals lifted the carriage curtain to peek inside, but seeing it held an unattractive elderly couple, they paid no further mind and let them pass.

In less than ten days, the three of them arrived by Dongting Lake.

This lake, reputed to be a vast eight hundred square miles, was part of the ancient Yunmeng marshes. It truly lived up to its name: mist-covered waves stretched boundlessly, and the water light merged with the heavens. When the three reached the lakeshore, it was morning under clear skies. They saw water and sky blended in hues of green, ten thousand acres shimmering blue, a breathtakingly beautiful scene.

This was Gu Fengchen’s first time here, and he couldn’t help but be filled with awe.

Bai Jingjing kept some travel funds and sent the carriage driver back. Before leaving, the driver gave them a map, saying it was entrusted by Ying Tian’ao. If they intended to enter the Nangong Family manor, they absolutely needed to study this map carefully.

Gu Fengchen took it and saw it was a rough sketch depicting the layout of the Nangong Family estates. Several locations were circled in cinnabar red ink, with characters written in the same vermillion.

Bai Jingjing and Gu Fengchen found a spot to rest. Although they were disguised, it was too hastily done. This was Nangong Family territory, filled with numerous martial artists, many of whom had sharp eyes. If discovered, it could lead to considerable inconvenience. So they avoided staying at an inn, instead sitting amidst a concealed grove.

They had bought plenty of food on the road. After a hearty meal, they discussed their next move.

It was still early; sneaking into the Nangong Family manor on Junshan Island to steal the antidote was out of the question. The only feasible plan was to wait until nightfall. But once night fell, hiring a boat might be difficult. Therefore, Bai Jingjing proposed renting a boat first and then paddling it to Junshan Island after dark.

Gu Fengchen agreed. Bai Jingjing went to the lakeshore and rented a small boat, mooring it by the bank as they waited quietly for darkness.

It was during the eighth lunar month. Though midday was still somewhat hot, the air cooled noticeably once the sun dipped west. Gu Fengchen studied the map for a long while, then performed breathing exercises and energy circulation to recuperate. He felt his internal injuries posed no hindrance anymore, but he began to worry about Bai Jingjing. “The Nangong Family is the leader of the martial world in Jiangnan,” he said to her. “It must be full of hidden experts. We are going deep inside. A single slip could mean lethal danger.”

Bai Jingjing nodded. “Indeed. We need to be careful.”

Gu Fengchen continued, “When it comes to cunning, you surpass me. But regarding martial arts, I’m stronger than you. I think sneaking in to steal the antidote probably won’t require much scheming. Inside, it’s more about grabbing someone, demanding to know where the flower is, grabbing it, and leaving. So…”

“So you want to go in alone. Am I right?” Bai Jingjing interjected.

Gu Fengchen smiled. “Exactly. You can moor the boat by the shore and wait for me.” Bai Jingjing thought for a moment, then reluctantly nodded. “You’re right. My martial arts aren’t strong. If I went in, I’d only be a burden. If we got discovered, you’d have to save me AND find the antidote. It would ruin the whole mission. Go. I’ll wait for you right near Junshan.”

Before long, darkness finally descended. Seeing no one around, the two pushed the boat into the lake, jumped aboard, and began rowing. The small boat moved lightly forward like a shuttle fish.

Needless to say, Bai Jingjing, having roamed the Jianghu for a long time, was very adept at rowing. Gu Fengchen, having grown up by the Yi River, was also no stranger to boats. Both possessed Internal Energy, so their rowing was swift. Before midnight, the small boat approached Junshan Island.

Junshan wasn’t very large, only a few hundred acres. The Nangong Family manor stood right in its center. The two cautiously moored the boat in a hidden spot. Gu Fengchen imparted a few final instructions to Bai Jingjing, established a signal, and then, using his lightness skill, set off alone up the mountain.

For this short stretch of the journey, Gu Fengchen exercised extreme caution, fearing discovery. Based on his assumptions, the Nangong Family manor would be heavily guarded, experts patrolling frequently, and Junshan itself would be thick with lookouts. Yet, he reached the outer wall of the manor compound without seeing a single soul.

Such a colossal Nangong Family manor – how could its defenses be so strangely lax? If enemies attacked, wouldn’t they just waltz right in! Could it be someone knew he was coming and set an ambush inside the walls? Similar to that incident Ling Ling encountered at Five Precepts Manor?

Suddenly, Gu Fengchen recalled something he had heard about the Nangong Family at Shaolin Temple. Roughly ten years prior, the notorious master assassin of the Jianghu underworld, “Horizontal Sky” Helan Wang, had led his twelve top killers to annihilate the Nangong Family. At that time, Nangong Bai, the head of the Nangong family, was dead. His son Nangong Yue was still young. It seemed the perfect moment to strike. Righteous factions in the Jianghu heard about it and urgently sought out Zhuge Xianyun, hoping he would intervene to assist. Unexpectedly, Zhuge Xianyun didn’t even acknowledge them. He just said five words: “Little Child Easily Bullied?”.

People were greatly puzzled, believing Zhuge Xianyun was coldly washing his hands of it, leaving the Nangong Family to fend for itself. They felt a chill at what they perceived as his indifference. Then came the surprise: that dark night, when Helan Wang and his twelve killers infiltrated Junshan Island… they vanished. Never seen again. According to one of the boat men who escaped, not a single sound of fighting was heard that night. When the Nangong Family servants lazily emerged the next morning to open the gates and sweep the grounds, it was as if nothing at all had happened.

Only then did everyone understand Zhuge Xianyun’s meaning. The Nangong Family’s power was far beyond that of ordinary Jianghu forces. The loss of a single Nangong Bai had not significantly diminished its strength.

Gu Fengchen was greatly startled, for the figure in the painting was none other than himself.

Startled by the noise, the girl turned around. At the sight of her face, Gu Fengchen felt icy coldness spread through his entire body.

Before him stood an exquisitely beautiful girl, lightly powdered, with pale-painted eyebrows. She wore a thin gauze outer garment, occasionally lifted by the breeze from the window, making her seem as if she might float away at any moment. Her skin was as fair as snow, her dark hair like clouds. Barefoot, golden bells encircled her ankles.

She was Qing’er.

Thinking he was mistaken, Gu Fengchen closed his eyes tightly, then snapped them open—only to see a large net flying toward him. Qing’er had somehow produced her weapon and hurled it straight at him. Gu Fengchen had fallen victim to this net before and knew its danger. He quickly sidestepped.

With a flick of her wrist, Qing’er caused the net to twist mid-air and come at him again. Gu Fengchen hastily called out, “Stop fighting! It’s me!” Qing’er sneered, “That’s exactly who I’m fighting! You audacious lecher! How dare you come to the Nangong Family!”

Seeing she didn’t recognize him, Gu Fengchen was puzzled for a moment before remembering his disguise; his face was still altered. He rolled swiftly, dodging the net, and violently rubbed his face until his true features were revealed.

As Qing’er prepared to pursue, Gu Fengchen sprang up and pointed to his face, “Don’t you recognize me?” At the sight of Gu Fengchen, surprise first flashed in Qing’er’s eyes, quickly replaced by icy coldness. “Of course I recognize you. You killed my fiancé! How could I forget?”

Even so, she reeled the net back with a gesture. With smooth, fluid movements, it folded neatly onto the table, covering the portrait beneath it.

“You are a member of the Nangong Family!” Gu Fengchen stated. Qing’er was about to answer when a voice came from outside the door, “Miss, is everything alright?” The voice belonged to a girl, likely a maid. Qing’er signaled for Gu Fengchen to crouch low where he couldn’t be seen. Raising her voice, she answered, “Indeed, someone barged in here riding a horse. I caught him.”

The maid outside merely replied, “Yes, Miss,” before silence followed, suggesting she had left.

Gu Fengchen looked at her questioningly. Qing’er explained coolly, “She knows my temper. If I say something jokingly, it means I’m angry, so they dare not bother me further.” Gu Fengchen asked in alarm, “So when you joked with me before, you were angry?”

Qing’er ignored his question. Instead, she demanded, “Why have you come? If it’s to apologize, you’ve already done that.” Gu Fengchen replied, “I haven’t come to apologize. Moreover, an apology is useless in this matter. I came for something else.” Qing’er said, “As long as it isn’t a marriage proposal.”

Gu Fengchen frowned. “A marriage proposal?” Qing’er gave a mocking laugh. “Yes. You killed my fiancé. Wasn’t it to take his place?” Gu Fengchen vehemently waved his hands. “How could I ever be so vile! You are the Nangong Family’s lady. You and Young Hero Zhuge must have been childhood sweethearts. I killed…”

Qing’er cut him off. “Spare me your consolations. State your business.”

Gu Fengchen sighed, compelled to admit, “I came to ask for something.”

Qing’er said, “Then why didn’t you go directly to my brother?” Gu Fengchen explained, “I didn’t know the way. Only your room had a light on, so I barged in. My apologies for the intrusion.” Qing’er retorted, “Then you didn’t come to ask for something, you came to steal it.”

“You’re right,” Gu Fengchen conceded. “It is theft. What I came to steal is the Drunken Spiral Scent Flower.”

At these words, Qing’er snapped her head up, staring intently at Gu Fengchen. “What did you say?”

Gu Fengchen continued, “I… I have a friend who’s been poisoned. I heard this flower alone can cure the poison. So I audaciously came here, seeking… no, stealing the antidote.”

Qing’er offered a cold smile. “So you’ve heard about Gate Master Ling Ling’s poisoning?”

Gu Fengchen was shocked. “How do you know it’s her?” Qing’er replied dismissively, “Simple. Because the one who poisoned her… was me.”

Hearing this, Gu Fengchen was first incredulous. Then, he recalled the events in Hangzhou that day. He had accompanied Lady Xueyi to retrieve the Earth Evasion Armor and only emerged from the city over an hour later, finding Qing’er waiting outside. He hadn’t asked her what she was doing during that hour.

Looking back, he realized that hour provided ample time for her to administer the poison.

Still unwilling to fully believe it, Gu Fengchen pressed, “But how? Ling Ling is guarded by numerous experts from the Red Lotus Sect. You couldn’t have gotten close to her.”

Qing’er stated impassively, “Administering poison doesn’t require getting close to her.”

Gu Fengchen drew a deep breath. “You are from the Four Great Clans. Targeting the Red Lotus Sect is understandable. But you kept this from me all along.” Qing’er countered, “I didn’t conceal it per se. You just never asked.” Gu Fengchen moved on, “That aside. Since you were the poisoner, you certainly won’t give me the antidote.”

Qing’er planted her hands on her hips. “Exactly! I refuse. What will you do about it? Kill me, just like you killed my fiancé?”
