Chapter 14: Danger?

The night sky over Binhai City was gray and bright, with neon lights making it look like shimmering colors. The dazzling signs and plaques on the street stood out under the colorful lights.

A faint, elegant melody came from the clubs along the street, giving the night a romantic feel.

Xiaoyu held onto Chen Mo’s waist and leaned against him, a sweet smile on her lips.

This was a feeling she had never experienced before. Back in the Library, when Chen Mo protected her, her heart had fluttered a little.

When Chen Mo boldly grabbed her hand, she silently agreed, and eventually mustered the courage to hold his hand too.

It had been over half a month since they started dating, and they spent most of their time in the Library. They only held hands and had never hugged. Since Chen Mo did not take the initiative, she naturally remained reserved.

The most intimate moment was the last time when she took the initiative to kiss Chen Mo.

That time, she had used all her courage.

This was the first time she leaned against Chen Mo, and it gave her a sense of security. It felt like even if the sky fell, there would be a shoulder to carry it for her.

“Chen Mo, tell me about your past,” Xiaoyu said.

“My past?”

“Yes, have you been in a relationship before?” Xiaoyu asked. “I want to know more about you.”

“Well, it’s all in the past. Do you really want to hear it?” Chen Mo asked uncertainly.

“Tell me. Don’t worry, I won’t get jealous. I’m not the jealous type,” Xiaoyu said with a laugh. “Tell me about your glorious history. Let your girlfriend understand you better.”

“There was one relationship,” Chen Mo said. “We broke up later.”

“How long did it last?”

“Two years.” Chen Mo’s gaze grew distant, and his tone carried a hint of emotion. “We broke up and got back together a few times. The last time, she was the one who ended it. We never saw each other again. It’s been almost four years now.”

“You still remember her?” Xiaoyu’s tone sounded a bit sour.

“I’ve moved on long ago.”

Chen Mo felt a chill down his spine. When a woman says she won’t get jealous, she is definitely lying.

“Ever since I met you, I’ve felt like you are my destiny.”

“Did you sweet-talk your previous girlfriend like that too?”

“Absolutely not. This is the first time I’ve said this. When I saw you in the Library, I had that feeling. Later, when I saw the bookshelf falling, I rushed over without hesitation. I just had this urge to protect you. I thought I was going to die.”

“Consider yourself forgiven.”

When Chen Mo mentioned the Library incident, Xiaoyu’s gaze softened. The way they met was indeed dramatic, perhaps it was fate.

“What about you? Have you been in a relationship before?”

Hearing Chen Mo’s question, Xiaoyu showed a mischievous smile. “Yes, three times.”

“No way?” Chen Mo’s tone turned sour.

“Can’t you see I’m naturally beautiful? The line of people chasing me at school could stretch from the podium to the back of the classroom.” Xiaoyu still wore a smile on her face.

“Can you tell me about your past?” Chen Mo sounded jealous.

“I was teasing you, you fool.” Xiaoyu laughed. “Many people chased me, but I turned them all down. This is my first relationship.”

“You’ve learned to lie.” Chen Mo smiled wryly. “Did Ruoxi and the others corrupt you?”

“Didn’t she tell you? My nickname is Kitten, and I’ve always had a bit of a wild side. There are many things you won’t expect from me in the future. Don’t be fooled by my gentle appearance.” Xiaoyu laughed.

“Oh no, I feel like I’ve fallen into a trap.”

“What did you say?”

“A gentle trap.” Chen Mo quickly said. “Ruoxi said you know how to act cute. Show me.”

“Don’t even think about it.”

Amid laughter and chatter, they unknowingly reached the street near the shopping square. After parking the bicycle, Chen Mo and Xiaoyu started strolling along the streets near the shopping square.

“Let’s go over there. If you want anything, I’ll buy it for you.” Chen Mo said.

“No.” Xiaoyu shook her head. “Just looking is enough. If you buy me something, it’ll still be your family’s money. When you can earn money yourself, then you can buy me things.”

“I…”

“Don’t say anything. Buy me things later. I promise I won’t hold back. I’ll make you broke.” Xiaoyu cut him off, held his arm, and walked slowly along the Shopping Street.

Looking at Xiaoyu, Chen Mo’s gaze was gentle.

“Xiaoyu, there’s something I need to tell you.”

“Go ahead.”

“I…”

“Ah… Robbery! Catch him!” Just as Chen Mo was about to speak, a woman’s scream interrupted him.

The crowd on the street became chaotic, quickly parting. A man holding a bag, looking panicked, rushed toward them with a shiny cold dagger.

“Get out of the way, or I’ll kill you!” the robber shouted at the crowd.

Seeing the robber charging in their direction, Chen Mo pulled Xiaoyu behind him and quickly stepped back. Before the robber could reach them, someone suddenly stuck out a foot.

“Ah!” A scream echoed as the robber lost his balance and flew forward, landing heavily on the ground.

“What happened?”

“Why did the robber fall?”

The crowd had been panicked, and no one noticed, but Chen Mo saw it clearly: it was the dark-skinned man who tripped the robber.

By then, the robber’s dagger and bag had slipped from his hands and landed right in front of Chen Mo and Xiaoyu.

Before the man could react, the robber scrambled up and stared at him in panic. The next moment, he rushed into the crowd of onlookers, snatched a baby, and held it in his arms.

“Let go of my daughter!” The woman who had been pushed down looked at the robber in terror.

“Stay back, or I’ll strangle her!” The robber’s face was savage as he kept stepping back. The crowd of onlookers quickly scattered.

“Friend, calm down.” The man’s expression turned serious. “Right now, it’s just robbery. The penalty isn’t severe—you’ll only be in jail for a few months at most. If you hurt her in a moment of impulse, you’ll face the death penalty.”

“Don’t come closer!” the robber yelled at the man. “Take one more step, and I’ll kill her. Don’t think I’m afraid to die. I can’t pay my gambling debts anyway, so death is waiting for me. I might as well take someone with me. Don’t push me.”

“Calm down, I’m not moving.” The man raised his hands and stopped. “Take it easy. We can talk. If you want money, I’ll give it to you. Just don’t hurt the baby; she knows nothing.”

“Save my child,” the young mother begged the man. “Save my daughter, please. She’s only nine months old.”

“Ma’am, stay calm.” The man turned to the robber. “I’m not a police officer. Let the child go, and I won’t catch you.”

“That bag, throw it to me. Hurry!” The robber glared at the man with hatred. If not for him, he would have gotten away.

“Here.” Chen Mo picked up the bag at his feet and threw it in front of the robber. Then he looked at the crowd. “Everyone, back off. Stop watching. Move away.”

Hearing Chen Mo, the crowd dispersed somewhat but still watched from a distance.

“You have the bag now. Gently put the child down, and I won’t catch you. I’m not a police officer.” The man glanced at Chen Mo.

Chen Mo pulled Xiaoyu behind him. He wasn’t sure what this desperate gambler might do. He hadn’t expected that on his rare date with Xiaoyu, they’d run into something like this.

“Drop dead!”

The robber sneered, threw the baby toward the road beside them, quickly grabbed the bag, and fled at full speed.

“Damn you!”

The moment the robber threw the baby, Chen Mo’s expression changed. He burst forward at his maximum speed. Before anyone could react, he leaped toward the baby. Amid the crowd’s gasps, Chen Mo caught the baby and tumbled heavily onto the road, rolling several times before stopping.

As soon as Chen Mo got up holding the baby, a car blaring its horn and braking skidded toward him.
