Chapter 116: Victory in Sight
Chapter 116: Victory in Sight
Around the ammunition box, over twenty people each held weapons, their expressions extremely tense. Both eyes were fixed firmly on the edges of the rooftop all around. The sounds of zombies and crawlers from below grew more and more chaotic, yet they still hadn’t appeared around the rooftop.
Why hadn’t they come up yet?
A very dangerous feeling rose in Lü Yang’s heart. He instinctively looked up toward the sky…
A swarm of huge flying insects swooped down from the air toward the group. The flapping sounds of their fleshy wings were completely drowned out by the rain! They waved big fleshy wings and sharp claws, the claw tips shining with a cold metal light. If nobody had looked up in time, once they got close and ambushed the people on the ground, all players would instantly be torn to pieces by those claws!
What a sneaky Death Killer!
“Look overhead! Heavy Machine Gun, turn and shoot! Outer ring, guard the rooftop ground! Inner ring, all of you look up and shoot!” Lü Yang shouted loud, then raised the muzzle of his Light Machine Gun and fired at the giant flying insects in the air.
Following Lü Yang’s command, the Heavy Machine Gun quickly raised its muzzle toward the huge flying insects. Over ten Submachine Guns fired into the air too. The dozen-plus giant flying insects couldn’t pull off their sneak attack. They were blasted apart in the sky by the strong fire. Pieces of their bodies smashed hard onto the rooftop ground by the helipad from the force, shaking the rooftop floor a lot.
At the same time, many zombies and one crawler crawled up onto the rooftop ground from the building’s sides. They howled and charged wildly toward the helipad area. The crawler was way more agile than the zombies. With its big body, once on the rooftop, it leaped over ten meters each jump.
“All of you fight the zombies! I’ll handle this crawler!” Lü Yang turned his Light Machine Gun muzzle and aimed at that crawler. After dozens of bullets hit it, the crawler’s huge body fell dead on the ground, five meters from the helipad.
Led by Lü Yang, the twenty-plus people worked together neatly. Each one did their job, shooting the zombies and crawlers coming from the rooftop edges. They took turns reloading ammo. They also had someone watch the sky to warn everyone about any giant flying insects trying to ambush.
Zombie and crawler bodies quickly piled up around the helipad. Everyone was in a crazy rush now. Over twenty Submachine Guns and Shotguns, plus one Light Machine Gun and one Heavy Machine Gun, spat fire nonstop. They blasted zombies, crawlers, and flying insects trying to get close into heaps of body bits.
Sometimes, where zombies and crawlers were thick, Lü Yang tossed a few Hand Grenades. After wild explosions, their defense got much easier. But there were only a few Hand Grenades in the ammo box, so Lü Yang kept control and stopped others from wasting them.
Five minutes passed. Everything seemed smooth. They reached a kind of balance… Zombies, crawlers, and sky flying insects charged nonstop, then turned into dead bodies on the ground. The twenty-plus players took turns reloading ammo and shooting like crazy. The tough firepower kept zombies, crawlers, and flying insects away.
Seeing the minutes tick by, Lü Yang didn’t look happy. He knew the fight couldn’t stay calm like this. The Death Killer wouldn’t let all rooftop players survive to board the Helicopter…
Oh right, the Helicopter!
By the helipad’s size, any Helicopter parked there carried few people. It couldn’t take all twenty-plus safely away.
Lü Yang was kind, but now, he’d likely not give his survival chance to others. Especially since he had the job to hunt the Death Killer and save Yi Ya.
Do not harm others, but guard against them trying to harm you. If everyone survived at boarding time, they needed to watch for anyone going wild to get on first, spraying others with weapons!
The scariest thing in the world wasn’t zombies or crawlers, not demons or ghosts, not the Mysterious Domain—it was people’s hearts.
Three more minutes passed. The quiet balance between humans and zombies, crawlers, flying insects went on. More bodies built up under the helipad. Luckily, this was just a game. Some old bodies vanished on their own. Otherwise, even if not killed, they might be buried in the body pile.
Nine minutes!
Just when all thought they’d make it through the ten minutes safely, victory close in round two, something happened…
A giant creature showed up at the rooftop edge. As it did, everyone’s hearts seemed to freeze, and the air got thick. Nobody knew how it climbed up; maybe it just appeared out of nowhere!
A massive Tyrannosaurus Rex!
“Holy crap!”
“Shoot!”
“Damn it!”
“Screw you!”
“Fuck!”
“This is crazy, isn’t it?”
“…”
All rooftop players used words like those to yell at the Tyrannosaurus Rex when they saw it.
So this third round wasn’t only Left 4 Dead, Starship Troopers, and StarCraft—they added Dino Crisis too!
The Tyrannosaurus Rex suddenly leaped forward. As it landed, the whole building shook strongly. Lü Yang figured if this weren’t the game or the Mysterious Domain, but the real world, with that weight and jump, it would crush the rooftop roof.
After landing, it stretched its neck, opened its big scary mouth, and roared fiercely at the group. The roar hit their ears, their bodies, and their hearts. If you weren’t there, you wouldn’t get how stunning the roar was!
“Heavy Machine Gun, lock onto the Tyrannosaurus Rex! Keep it away! You four cover it!” Lü Yang yelled loud, pulling four players to the Heavy Machine Gun to fill the gap after the gun turned its barrel.
The first nine-minute balance relied on their defensive shape staying solid. But once the Rex got close, that shape would be broken right away. Without it, they’d be split up by zombies and crawlers. In that case, death came in a blink.
The Tyrannosaurus Rex had very thick skin—or high health. Though all Heavy Machine Gun fire went at it, it didn’t get hurt much. Only the dense bullet spray kept its slow body from getting near the helipad fast.
Lü Yang had to do it—he shifted Light Machine Gun fire from crawlers to the Tyrannosaurus Rex too. If the Rex got close, round three would end early.
Half a minute later. The Heavy Machine Gun fire used to hold back one-third of zombies and crawlers. But now, all fire on the Rex cut pressure on zombies and crawlers in its zone. The circle closed in tight, and many zombies even crawled onto the helipad.
Lü Yang looked in the ammo box. Twelve Hand Grenades were left. He couldn’t save them now. He threw six Hand Grenades in a row at thick zombie spots around them. That finally brought both sides to a shaky balance again.
Nine minutes and thirty-five seconds!
The faint sound of helicopter rotors came from the sky far away.
