Chapter 109: At the End of the Line

The moment Lü Yang used the Agility Card, he felt everything around him become incredibly quiet, so quiet that he could clearly hear his own heartbeat. Time seemed to have completely stopped at that instant. A plastic bag, swept up by a speeding vehicle, happened to drift past Lü Yang’s car window but now hung motionless in the air.

After that brief moment of stillness and silence, the noise around him surged back, but the sounds were noticeably sluggish and distorted. Everything before Lü Yang’s eyes moved more slowly than in the normal world. Although the slowdown was only slight, for Lü Yang, speeding in reverse through the riverbed tunnel, it felt like a godsend.

Lü Yang estimated that after using the Agility Card, the relative speed between his car and the oncoming vehicles dropped from about 300 kilometers per hour to around 100 kilometers per hour. At this speed, weaving through the traffic felt effortless.

Lü Yang accelerated his car to its maximum speed of over 300 kilometers per hour. Even at this pace, he found it incredibly easy to dodge the cars racing toward him.

Another minute passed in a flash. The exit of the riverbed tunnel came into Lü Yang’s view, but just then, two police cars came screaming from the opposite direction. The officers inside, driven by a fearless resolve, blocked the tunnel exit with their vehicles, aiming to trap the “Death Killer,” who was wanted by the Ministry of Public Security, inside the riverbed tunnel.

At the critical moment, just before the two police cars could fully seal the exit, Lü Yang forced his way through the narrow gap, less than two meters wide, between them. As soon as his off-road vehicle broke through, another police car sped toward him head-on. Lü Yang jerked the steering wheel, and his vehicle scraped tightly against the side of the incoming police car, producing a harsh screech of metal as they passed each other.

Finally, Lü Yang’s off-road vehicle burst out of the riverbed tunnel. At that very instant, the torrential rain stopped, and sunlight broke through the clouds, casting a beautiful rainbow across the sky.

More police cars converged on the tunnel exit, their sirens blaring. In Lü Yang’s mind, the voice of the Death Killer spoke again, telling him he had passed the test and that, due to his excellent performance, Yi Ya would enjoy a long period of safety. The Death Killer concluded by saying he would contact Lü Yang again after Lü Yang evaded all the police cars.

Lü Yang had no time to respond to the Death Killer. Breaking out of the reverse tunnel had only temporarily ensured Yi Ya’s safety, but now he faced an even bigger problem.

The “Death Killer’s” high-speed street chase had drawn out nearly all the police cars in Guishe City. No matter which direction Lü Yang drove, dozens of police cars clung tightly to his tail.

During the pursuit, even some taxi drivers, trying to be heroic, joined in, using their vehicles to help block Lü Yang’s off-road car.

If not for the lingering effects of the Agility Card, Lü Yang would have been completely trapped by the swarm of police cars. Even so, his room to maneuver shrank until, at one point, his off-road vehicle crashed head-on into three police cars and came to a complete stop.

Five police cars slammed into him from behind at almost the same time, sealing off any escape route. Lü Yang was stuck, unable to move forward or back. With no other choice, he kicked open the car door, leaped out, and, before the officers could exit their vehicles, sprinted toward a nearby alley.

A moving car, unable to brake in time, suddenly swerved toward Lü Yang as he dashed across the street. The driver cried out, expecting to hit the jaywalker, but Lü Yang vanished from in front of the car with a single step. The driver wondered if he had imagined it.

Over a dozen police officers poured out of the stopped cars, guns raised. They shouted for Lü Yang to halt and raced after him. One officer even fired a shot in Lü Yang’s direction, suggesting they had orders to shoot the Death Killer on sight.

An armored truck filled with special police officers screeched to a halt at the alley’s entrance. More than ten special police officers filed out, submachine guns in hand, and charged into the alley after Lü Yang.

But as soon as they entered the alley, they were met with a hail of bullets. Lü Yang, a handgun in each hand, retreated while firing at them until both guns were empty.

After holstering the handguns, Lü Yang sprinted desperately down the alley. A wave of dizziness washed over him, and he nearly collapsed. Clearly, the Agility Card’s effects were fading, and he was about to enter the unconscious period that followed its use. Yet, with police and special police everywhere, there was no safe place to hide.

Lü Yang’s luck wasn’t on his side. This alley was flanked by walls at least four to five meters high or tall buildings, with no narrow passages for him to slip into. After a few more quick steps, Lü Yang pushed off the ground with all his might, leaping to scale the four-meter wall beside him, hoping to find a hiding spot on the other side. But as the Agility Card’s power rapidly waned, his jump fell short, leaving only his fingertips barely clinging to the top edge of the wall.

Lü Yang let out a roar, summoning every ounce of strength to try and pull himself over the wall. But just then, more than a dozen bullets whizzed toward him as he clung to the wall. Most missed due to the distance, but one stray bullet grazed his arm. The shock made Lü Yang tense up, and he lost his grip, tumbling back to the ground.

Once on the ground, Lü Yang had almost completely lost the Agility Card’s boost. These Eerie Cards, with their special functions, couldn’t be used in quick succession. Having just used one, Lü Yang couldn’t activate any other Eerie Cards now. To escape the special police officers’ guns, he had to rely solely on himself.

Clutching his bleeding arm, Lü Yang charged toward the end of the alley. As the special police and other officers, dozens of meters behind, raised their guns to fire again, Lü Yang happened to pass by a few pedestrians frozen in fear. He quickly ducked and hid behind them, forcing the special police to lower their weapons.

Seizing the chance, Lü Yang gritted his teeth and ran like mad again. Just as he was about to burst out of the alley onto the main street, another police car sped over, stopping sideways and mostly blocking the not-so-wide alley mouth.

The driver’s side window was rolled down, and two submachine gun barrels appeared there.

Behind him, more than ten special police officers rushed forward in unison. With four-meter-high walls on either side and the Agility Card’s boost gone, Lü Yang was at the end of the line. The side effects of the Agility Card kicked in rapidly; dizziness overwhelmed him, and he nearly collapsed to his knees.

No!

One of the two submachine guns protruding from the police car window erupted with a flash of fire, spraying a stream of bullets without hesitation…
