Chapter 19: One Must Have Principles
Chapter 19: One Must Have Principles
Kanzaki Rin watched Fang Cheng staring unblinkingly at the heart in his hand like it was some precious treasure. Anger surged through her veins.
You bastard, refusing with your mouth while secretly craving it?
Crossing her arms, Kanzaki Rin sneered, “Want to eat it? Then eat! Stop pretending you don’t want it.”
Her words jolted Fang Cheng back to awareness.
He rubbed his eyes until the glowing text in his vision faded. Suddenly, his sense of smell sharpened dramatically. Countless odors flooded his nostrils, yet he could distinguish each one clearly.

This had to be the effect of Advanced Smell.
The other three abilities were self-explanatory – collecting fragments would unlock complete skills or rewards, identical to the mobile game mechanics from his past life.
Crazed Blood and Burning Blood were likely Yagawa Ryouka’s vampiric abilities.
But Fang Cheng’s real focus was the Life Fragment.
His number of lives formed the cornerstone of his existence. Though he’d sought ways to increase them without success, here was a Life Fragment obtained simply by looting a corpse.
He owed Kanzaki Rin for this. Without her tossing him the heart, he’d never have thought to search Yagawa Ryouka’s body – he wasn’t some corpse-rummaging pervert.
This fragment-collecting method clearly pushed him toward dangerous monster-slaying for upgrades. How he wished for an idle game system where sleeping granted experience instead!
Kanzaki Rin’s voice broke his thoughts. “Well? Eat it or I’m taking it back.”
Fang Cheng flung the heart at her. “Eat this? I’m no blood-drinking savage.”
She fumbled to catch it, astonished. “You’re refusing power? This could strengthen you!”
Fang Cheng stood tall. “If I want power, I’ll earn it through training – not some vile shortcut.” Meeting her gaze squarely, he declared, “Remember this – though bitten, I remain human. I’ve got principles. Don’t treat me like a monster.”
Kanzaki Rin froze, speechless. Before today, she’d have dismissed this as empty boasting. Yet here he stood, resisting a vampire’s primal urge to consume kin – harder than abstaining addict refusing drugs.
Her perception shifted. This wasn’t just strong willpower – it defied vampiric nature itself.
“I… understand.” She extended her hand. “Kanzaki Rin, Disaster Countermeasures Department intern. Let’s start over.”
Fang Cheng didn’t shake her hand, instead planting his hands on his hips with a grin. “You think shaking hands will magically erase our problems?”
Kanzaki Rin slightly furrowed her brows, keeping her gaze fixed upward. “If my previous behavior offended you, I’ll apologize. Watching you constantly was for your safety…”
“Nope, not that!” Fang Cheng wagged his finger before pointing at Yagawa Ryouka’s corpse. “We’ll discuss that later. What about this?”
Kanzaki Rin swallowed her questions. “I’ll handle it.”
“Fine. You deal with that while I change clothes.” Fang Cheng turned toward the bedroom – his clothes had been burned off by Kanzaki Rin earlier.
Once alone, Kanzaki Rin quietly sighed in relief. The guy stood there completely bare without an ounce of shame. She couldn’t even mention it without seeming overly conscious.
She maneuvered a drone through the window, delivering a hollow package containing a silver-gray body bag. After packing the corpse, she waited for nightfall to transport it via drone.
Returning in fresh clothes, Fang Cheng righted the overturned sofa and coffee table. He sat cross-legged in a theatrical pose while Kanzaki Rin faced him with a pained expression. “What’s this about? We’ve got no other issues.”
“No issues? Ha!” Fang Cheng snorted coldly. “You claim to protect me, but really used me as bait to catch vampires. Right?”
Kanzaki Rin’s composure flickered briefly. She hadn’t expected him to uncover her fishing tactic so fast. “True,” she admitted calmly, “but I did warn you about other vampires.”
“You still exploited me!” Fang Cheng cut in. “Without your drone tailing me, I wouldn’t have gone to school and exposed myself!”
Kanzaki Rin maintained her poker face. “I used you, yes. But those bloodsuckers would’ve found you anyway. At least I helped.”
Fang Cheng drummed his fingers on the table. “I died once before you showed up! Then I saved your skin! Your ‘help’ means collecting my corpse afterwards?”
After a pause, Kanzaki Rin lowered her eyes. “That’s included.” She’d actually brought three body bags – including one for herself. Fang Cheng would’ve called her crazy if he knew.
“If you’re still upset, I’ll apologize… and compensate you.” Kanzaki Rin’s unexpected offer made Fang Cheng’s eyes gleam.
Compensation! Exactly what he wanted.
Seemingly oblivious, Kanzaki Rin pressed on: “Despite the mess, we both survived. Let’s have productive talks instead of fighting. Agreed?”
Fang Cheng instantly caught her drift: “You want to keep fishing for vampires?”
