Chapter 14: Little White Fox (Part 1)
As they were about to leave, Wei Dehua couldn’t help but ask, “Zhou Yu, what did you study in school?” Zhou Yu didn’t seem like an ordinary young man to him at all.
“I studied computer science before,” Zhou Yu said with a smile.
“Computer science…” Wei Dehua found it hard to believe. Most people who studied computer science were rumored to be quite dull and introverted, weren’t they?
Zhou Yu didn’t say anything more. He stood up and extended his right hand. “Shopkeeper Wei, I look forward to our cooperation.” The reason he could negotiate with Wei Dehua so calmly was because of the delicious taste of the grapes.
Of course, it was also because Wei Dehua’s dessert shop was small and not very well-known. If it had been a large chain dessert store in the city, Zhou Yu would have had no means to negotiate a partnership.
“I look forward to our cooperation too,” Wei Dehua said, shaking Zhou Yu’s hand without pressing further.
After Wei Dehua left, Li Guomin walked over. “Zhou Yu, did the cooperation work out?”
“It did, and I have to thank you for that seafood feast, Uncle,” Zhou Yu said half-jokingly.
“Brother Universe is amazing. He can even make business deals at a street food stall,” Li Tianbiao said with admiration.
Li Guomin’s face immediately darkened. “What, Biaozi? Do you look down on our food stall or something?”
“Dad, I’m sorry, I’m sorry. I’ll just go work, okay?” Li Tianbiao said with a pitiful look before fleeing the scene again.
Zhou Yu smiled and looked in the direction Wei Dehua had left. He couldn’t help but feel that this blind date hadn’t been a waste of time. After helping out at the shop for a while and bringing some food for Huzi, he returned to the Old Family House.
That afternoon, he had taken some time to buy a few things and fixed the light in the yard. Now, when he flipped the switch, half the yard lit up brightly.
After feeding Huzi, Zhou Yu went to the grapevine and looked at the two Jade Dew plants that were showing variegation. Originally, only one leaf had variegation, but now the two neighboring leaves were also starting to show it.
Seeing these two even more beautiful Jade Dew plants, Zhou Yu’s face broke into a wide smile. There was a big difference in value between a Jade Dew with a little variegation and one with several variegated leaves.
Back in his room, Zhou Yu looked at the Radio on the table with anticipation. He wondered what surprise Uncle-Master Wu would bring him tomorrow. Thinking of Uncle-Master Wu’s loud scolding, he couldn’t help but laugh.
Early the next morning, Zhou Yu was woken up again by Huzi’s barking. He put on his clothes and hurried outside, only to see Huzi barking continuously under the courtyard wall.
He rubbed his sleepy eyes and looked up at the wall. To his surprise, the Little White Fox from that night had returned.
Over the past couple of days, Zhou Yu had looked up information online and confirmed that there were no White Foxes in Huaxia—only red foxes and sand foxes.
However, according to some sources, the White Foxes in Huaxia legends were actually red foxes with albinism. Many had white fur, but it was often mixed with other colors. Yet, the Little White Fox before him was completely white all over.
The Little White Fox stood on the wall, nervously looking down, its gaze occasionally drifting toward the grapevine in the yard.
Zhou Yu smiled, picked a bunch of Grapes from the vine, and slowly walked over. That night, he hadn’t seen it clearly, but now, upon closer inspection, this Little White Fox was very beautiful, and every move it made was incredibly cute.
He reached the base of the wall, placed the Grapes on the ground, pointed at them for the little fox, and slowly stepped back. At the same time, he told Huzi to stop barking.
The Little White Fox looked at the Grapes on the ground, hesitated for a moment, and then slowly jumped down from the wall. It landed lightly on the ground, picked up the bunch of Grapes, gave one last longing look at the grapevine, and turned to leave.
It really left after getting what it wanted. Zhou Yu shook his head helplessly. After a moment’s thought, he decided to follow the little fox to see why this young fox didn’t have its parents around.
He found a bag, picked two more bunches of Grapes, and said to the big yellow dog beside him, “Huzi, follow that little fox.”
Huzi understood Zhou Yu’s words and headed straight for the back door of the yard. Zhou Yu quickly opened the back door, locked it, and followed closely behind Huzi.
Gradually, they moved farther away from the village. Looking at the direction, they seemed to be heading toward the mountains. It appeared this little fox lived in the hills.
When Zhou Yu was a child, he had gone into the mountains with his elders to catch wild rabbits. However, as living standards improved and wildlife protection efforts increased, very few people went into the mountains now.
They hadn’t walked for long before reaching the foot of the mountain. Before entering the mountains, Zhou Yu found a sturdy stick nearby to use for protection. Although these weren’t uninhabited deep mountains, there were still some fierce wild animals living there to some extent.
Then, following Huzi, he slowly entered the forest. During his college years, unlike others who spent their days playing computer games, Zhou Yu had taken up gardening and fitness. So, walking through the forest didn’t feel tiring at all.
Zhou Yu walked through the forest for twenty minutes but still hadn’t seen any trace of the little fox. Had Huzi’s sense of smell failed? But looking at Huzi moving forward without hesitation, it seemed quite confident.
After some thought, Zhou Yu decided to search for ten more minutes. If they couldn’t find it, he would take Huzi back.
After about five minutes, he heard low growls from up ahead. His expression changed slightly, and he quickly called Huzi to a stop. Bending down, he cautiously moved closer.
The growls didn’t sound very loud, likely from some small animals. In areas close to human habitation, there probably weren’t any large wild animals.
As the sounds grew closer, Zhou Yu crouched behind a small mound and slowly peered over it. When he saw what was happening, he froze for a moment.
Just as he had guessed, there were three or four small animals up ahead. He only recognized some of them: two were weasels, and one was a Leopard Cat. As for the others, he couldn’t tell what they were.
These small animals were gathered around a large tree, looking up at it while growling softly at each other.
Zhou Yu’s gaze also turned to the large tree. In the middle of the trunk, there was a hole. At that moment, a white head popped out of the hole and let out a low growl at the animals below.
He saw clearly that the white head belonged to the Little White Fox that had taken advantage earlier. After growling, the Little White Fox tossed something down. The animals sniffed the thing on the ground. Three of them didn’t move, but the fourth, an unidentified small animal, picked it up and ate it.
