Chapter 64: True and False Guardian
Chapter 64: True and False Guardian
“Let’s go!” Chen Mo called to Little Warrior to retreat.
“Ancient Treant, is it the Dungeon Guardian? Aren’t we going to kill it?” Little Warrior followed closely but couldn’t help looking back at the ancient tree.
After being attacked by Chen Mo, the tree revealed two wrinkled eyes and a large mouth. It just glanced at them and did not pursue, seemingly having no intention to fight.
“We can’t kill it, and there’s no need to,” Chen Mo shook his head.
It was indeed the Ancient Treant, with special defensive abilities. Even against a Black Slime, Chen Mo could deal 4 points of Damage, but an arrow shot at the Ancient Treant only dealt 1 point of Damage. Its Health Points were impossible to estimate. Without buying items from Mogill, it was impossible to defeat the Ancient Treant.
“Why?” Little Warrior asked. Being with this Hunter brother made her feel confused; there were many things she couldn’t understand.
“It’s not the Dungeon Guardian. The Dungeon Guardian should be Mogill!” Chen Mo chuckled.
Just as Chen Mo shared this conclusion with Little Warrior, two beautiful female Players, one tall and one short, arrived by the forest lake.
They were both stunning, but most people in the Instance Dungeon were probably unfamiliar with them.
They were the last two to sign up, both wearing extremely ordinary equipment at the time. After they entered, the System prompted everyone to form teams. Although they were pretty, no one invited them.
But now, these two female Players stood before Mogill wearing extremely luxurious gear. The once inconspicuous pair now looked dazzling under the shimmering lake light.
Golden Phoenix, with her long black wavy hair, looked at the three items sold by Mogill and occasionally chuckled.
“Little Demon, what do you think?” Golden Phoenix asked the petite and delicate-looking girl beside her, who appeared to be around the same age as Little Warrior.
“There’s a problem. Our earlier speculation is likely true,” Little Demon nodded seriously.
“Haha, my Little Demon really is the smartest!”
Golden Phoenix hugged Little Demon tightly, rubbing her face against Little Demon’s cheek, then turned to Mogill.
“Mr. Mogill, could you answer a question for me?”
“Of course, I will tell you everything I know, Adventurer!” Mogill smiled kindly.
“Are you the Dungeon Guardian?”
Golden Phoenix asked with a smile. Mogill was startled but quickly shook his head. “Adventurer, you must be joking.”
“Please answer my question. Are you the Dungeon Guardian?” Golden Phoenix did not let him off.
“Ah, young people these days are so suspicious. Fine, I’ll answer you: I am not the Dungeon Guardian,” Mogill shook his head and sighed.
Golden Phoenix looked at Little Demon.
“He’s lying!” Little Demon said, her tone very certain.
“Just as I thought! Old man, die!” Golden Phoenix pulled back the fiery red bow in her hands, and a flame arrow shot toward Mogill with a boom.
A look of panic appeared on Mogill’s face!
—522!
The flame arrow hit Mogill, causing him to lose over 500 Health Points instantly. Golden Phoenix’s attack power was astonishing!
Little Demon had already raised her Staff, ready to fight. But in the next moment, both Little Demon and Golden Phoenix’s expressions changed drastically!
A white light suddenly enveloped them.
…
“Announcement: The team formed by Players ‘Golden Phoenix’ and ‘Little Demon’ maliciously attacked the Instance Dungeon NPC Mogill and has been expelled from the Trial Instance Dungeon. The 20 Forest Crystals they possessed have been reclaimed by the System and will respawn randomly within the Instance Dungeon.”
Chen Mo suddenly stopped in his tracks.
He was about to explain to Little Warrior why Mogill was the Dungeon Guardian when this announcement suddenly appeared in the Instance Dungeon.
What happened? Was his guess wrong?
Not only Chen Mo but also the team formed by Xiaolou Fengyu, Wang Xu, Wang Wen, and others were stunned.
Noticing the monster’s dying roar and analyzing carefully after meeting Mogill, suspecting that the Dungeon Guardian was someone else wasn’t too difficult for the skilled Players in this Instance Dungeon.
As the only visible NPC in the Instance Dungeon, Mogill naturally became the target of suspicion.
However, everyone only suspected and did not attack Mogill. Only Golden Phoenix and Little Demon, through some means, were convinced that Mogill was the Dungeon Guardian and took action. But they ended up being expelled by the System.
“What’s going on? According to our analysis, Mogill was very likely the Dungeon Guardian. Now it seems Mogill is truly an NPC,” Wang Xu frowned.
Their six-member team, consisting of Wang Xu, his brother Wang Wen, and Xiaolou Fengyu, was undeniably strong.
“Mogill is recognized by the System as an NPC, so that’s confirmed. Now there are only two possibilities. First, our initial speculation was wrong, and the Ancient Treant is the Dungeon Guardian. But it’s too powerful; we definitely can’t kill it. This would also explain what the monster said before dying. The second possibility is that the Dungeon Guardian met the appearance conditions, but the Instance Dungeon will undergo changes, making it impossible for us to clear it,” analyzed Xiaolou Fengyu.
“Overthinking it now is useless. There are too many uncertainties. Collecting Forest Crystals is the most important thing for now,” Wang Wen’s eyes flickered, his thoughts unknown.
“Right. With enough Forest Crystals, we can handle any changes that occur.”
The group made up their minds.
But Chen Mo was still deep in thought.
He had a piece of information that no one else knew.
The Ancient Treant was definitely not the Dungeon Guardian! The rules clearly stated that the Dungeon Guardian would only appear under certain conditions. Since the conditions weren’t met yet, but the Ancient Treant had appeared, it proved it wasn’t the Dungeon Guardian.
Because of this information, he concluded that Mogill was the Dungeon Guardian.
He hadn’t found the Ancient Treant around here by luck.
He had previously assumed that even if the Dungeon Guardian met the appearance conditions, Players still couldn’t determine if the Ancient Treant was the Dungeon Guardian.
How could this assumption hold true?
Simple. If the real Dungeon Guardian and the Ancient Treant were within the same area, and the System only notified that the Dungeon Guardian appeared within a certain coordinate range, Players wouldn’t be able to tell if the Ancient Treant was the Dungeon Guardian.
That’s why Chen Mo had been attacking suspicious trees in the woods around Mogill.
If the Ancient Treant wasn’t the Dungeon Guardian, then it had been in the Instance Dungeon all along. If he could find it nearby, Chen Mo could conclude that Mogill was the Dungeon Guardian.
Now, after finally reaching this conclusion, the System announcement overturned it, confirming Mogill as an NPC. What was going on?
Hmm, wait!
In the rules and clearance conditions given by the System, he seemed to have missed a very important setting!
Darn it! He almost got tricked again!
However, with the precedent set by Golden Phoenix and Little Demon, Chen Mo didn’t dare act recklessly this time. If those two hadn’t attacked first, he and Little Warrior might have been the ones expelled.
“Let’s go! We’re going to kill everyone else in the Instance Dungeon!” Chen Mo called to Little Warrior.
“Okay!” Little Warrior, this little lolita, seemed quite battle-hungry and excitedly followed behind Chen Mo.
