Chapter 151: The Squared-Up Meow Star Creatures
His involvement with these Roast Turkeys was not much. It was Sasha who handled them with her daughter.
Today’s Roast Turkey was the only dish. The Head Chef was Sasha, the assistant chef was Alex, and Liu Heming was the helper.
Maybe it was because Liu Heming had influenced her, or perhaps Sasha wanted her daughter to enjoy her cooking when they went back someday, recently Sasha finally put down those thick books and science magazines and started reading cookbooks instead.
Before, she was best at making salads. Now she was finally challenging herself with more difficult foods. But it was tough for Liu Heming and Robin. The learning process was full of challenges. Throwing away the unsuccessful dishes felt wasteful, so to encourage Sasha, the two of them had to finish all those experimental foods.
As Robin said, it was much better than during military service when no supplies came and they had to catch live animals to eat. For Liu Heming, he had to eat everything whether he liked it or not, because he had his own little plans.
Their efforts paid off. Now the food Sasha cooked was edible, and some dishes even tasted good because she added some Small Lake Water.
The turkeys were thawed and marinated yesterday to make the meat more flavorful and tender. He did the cleaning. Then the mother and daughter brushed various seasonings onto the turkeys. After that, it was his job again—he had to massage the turkeys.
He wondered if the name “massage” came from this. Anyway, three big turkeys tired him out.
The marinated turkeys were brought back to the Head Chef and the assistant chef. Then the mother and daughter continued their work.
They stuffed the turkey cavities with a mix of onions and Morel Mushroom rice, added a little Small Lake Water, and tied the turkey cavities shut with small strings.
They brushed oil on the outside. The mother and daughter held the brushes, and Liu Heming held the oil bowl. Everyone thought the family of three worked together quite well.
After brushing oil and honey, the mother and daughter carefully wrapped the turkey wing tips with foil. Alex, especially, wrapped them very seriously. Though she was young, she wrapped four wing tips.
Before putting the turkeys in the oven, Sasha felt a bit nervous. In the United States, roasting a turkey was a big task because people loved eating Roast Turkey during many holidays. But this was Sasha’s first time attempting such a big task, so it was natural for her to feel unsure.
“Don’t worry, it will taste great,” Liu Heming whispered to encourage her.
Sasha nodded slightly and put the big turkey into the oven.
One turkey was enough for all these people to eat. The turkey Liu Heming bought was quite big, weighing sixteen pounds. The other two were prepared with less salt, meant for the animals at home. The Bear Kids had big appetites, and so did the four Meow Star Creatures who had grown much bigger.
“Dexter, are these really the same Little Kittens from before? Why do I feel like they look a bit squared…” Lewis said with a laugh as he watched the Meow Star Creatures leisurely come downstairs.
Liu Heming shook his head helplessly. “Who knows what’s up with them? They looked cute and adorable when they were small. Now they’re getting fatter and fatter, their fur is longer, and with their short legs, they do look squared up.”
Other people’s Meow Star Creatures became cuter and looked adorable. His own Meow Star Creatures, perhaps because life was too good for them, were also adorable but in a silly, clumsy way, especially with their increasingly long fur.
As if they understood Liu Heming was making fun of their looks, the four squared-up Meow Star Creatures gathered at his feet, sat down, and just stared at him.
“What are they doing?” George asked curiously.
“I know, I know! Grandpa George, they want Dad to scratch them,” Alex said happily.
“I have to scratch them. If I don’t, they’ll use my pants to sharpen their claws,” Liu Heming said helplessly as he crouched down.
One of the Meow Star Creatures, seeing him crouch, rolled onto its back, all four paws up, tilted its head back, and closed its eyes.
Liu Heming scratched it for a while, then waved to the next waiting one and patted the one he was scratching. That one rolled over, stood up, stretched, and walked away to lick its paws. The other Meow Star Creature he called over lay down in the same pose as the previous one.
“Haha, Dexter, they’re so cute,” George said, laughing.
He had never seen such enjoy-seeking Little Kittens before. Feeling delighted, he wanted to pick up the one licking its paws and cuddle it.
But before he could get close, that Meow Star Creature glanced at him, jumped up, pushed off the wall lightly, and landed on the stair railing.
“Oh my, they’re so fat, how are they still so agile?” George asked in surprise.
“Who knows? Even though they’re very fat, they’re really quick. Sometimes when they’re outside, if you don’t pay attention, they’ll run up to the roof to sunbathe,” Liu Heming said, shrugging.
“And they’re very alert. Sometimes when I want to play a trick on them, it’s hard to catch them. They won’t let anyone trim their claws, not even Alex. At most, we can trim one claw at a time, so we gave up later.”
The animals in his home were all a bit unusual, one way or another.
The Bear Kids were no exception. He raised them from when they were small, and now they were very clever. But Selin and the Meow Star Creatures who stayed later were also not normal.
Selin now refused to eat any food from outside. Occasionally, it caught some mice or voles, but it always placed them in front of the house. Liu Heming didn’t know if it was trying to show its purpose.
As for these four Meow Star Creatures, they were even more remarkable. Even though they were short and chubby, they could hunt. Last time, they caught a rabbit, but Liu Heming found it too strange and didn’t dare tell anyone.
As they chatted, the turkey in the oven was done. Sasha brought out the big, fragrant turkey.
“Sasha’s cooking is excellent,” George praised. It really was good; it looked very appetizing.
When everyone tasted the turkey meat, they praised it even more.
The skin was crispy, but the meat was incredibly tender. With one bite, the rich juices filled their mouths. Paired with a spoonful of the rice from inside the turkey and a sip of the Morel Mushroom soup, it was truly sweet and delicious.
