Chapter 105: Is the System Up to Something?

Amidst everyone’s anticipation, the heavy rain poured down, with streaks of lightning seeming to tear the sky apart.

The rain fell too quickly and too heavily, trapping all these people at Liu Heming’s ranch. Even with rain gear, in such heavy rain, if you held an umbrella, you would still be drenched by the time you ran to your car.

Because everyone was here, Liu Heming originally planned to ask the System why the Soil Improvement task was completed, but he had no chance. He could not just leave everyone here and run into his room.

“Dexter, we’re heading back first. We need to check on our homes,” George said after putting on his clothes and coming over to Liu Heming.

This was what worried him. If it rained just as heavily upstream, the shallow river channel passing through his ranch might not be able to handle it. It could even lead to flooding. Others’ fields had no crops, but his still had plenty.

Everyone said their goodbyes and left. The older folks were personally driven home by Liu Heming and John. The rain was too heavy, and the roads were not easy to travel.

After making sure everyone got home safely, Liu Heming went to check on the ranch. Fortunately, the river channel did not seem to have much water yet, and his fields did not have much standing water. Still, he figured his vegetables would definitely be affected because the rain was just too heavy.

Dinner was easy to handle. As the little one requested, he made Boiled Fish in Chili Oil again. Now that only family remained, Liu Heming put more effort into it.

When it was time to rest in the evening, the little one did not even ask Sasha for permission. After changing into her pajamas, she ran straight to Liu Heming’s room. She brought her favorite storybook and asked Liu Heming to read it to her.

Usually, Sasha was the one who read these books to her, but now that the little one was attached to Liu Heming, this honorable task fell to him.

This put a lot of pressure on Liu Heming. Reading a storybook to his daughter was not a simple task. You had to read with emotion and handle her endless questions. Sasha always did it this way, and it was no exception for him.

After struggling for a long time and being corrected by his daughter several times, Liu Heming finally completed this challenging bedtime task. Watching his daughter sleep soundly, he kissed her on the forehead.

“Stay in the room. I’m going outside to check if there’s any flooding,” Liu Heming said softly when he saw the Little Bears trying to follow him.

Outside, Robin was still awake. Liu Heming gave him the same excuse. Checking the rain was one thing, but more importantly, he wanted to ask the System for some answers.

He needed to confirm his suspicions. Even though the System gave him rewards, just like playing a game, you had to understand the rules. Otherwise, if you did not even know the rules, how could you maximize your benefits?

He had experienced System upgrades before, but they had never caused such a big stir. Now he was sure that this sudden heavy rain must be related to the System upgrade. He wondered if this meant the System was up to something.

First, it was unlikely that such heavy rain was just a sudden weather change. With current technology, there should have been some signs.

Second, there was the extra reward the System gave him today. In his experience, the System was always stingy. It had been silent for a while, and when he tried to talk to it, it was dismissive. That meant something was up.

Third, this upgrade seemed more intense than usual. It was like some game updates that could be done online, maybe making the server a bit laggy, but this one felt like a full maintenance shutdown.

This made Liu Heming certain of one thing: that little trickster System had fooled him before. It really could affect the real world. It also worried him a little. Often, game maintenance was about fixing bugs. He wondered if there were any loopholes he had not discovered, causing him to miss out on benefits.

After thinking it over for a while, he still felt a bit regretful. If he could have taken advantage of the System, it would have been a big gain. He did not know if he had really missed out.

Since he was already here, he used a small comb to groom Charming Girl’s fur. Charming Girl responded to him in a friendly way.

After finishing everything here, Liu Heming returned to the house.

His daughter was sleeping soundly. Maybe she had played too wildly today, or because the windows were closed due to the rain, her little face was flushed.

This little one was just too adorable. It seemed he would have to discuss with Sasha tomorrow whether their daughter could video call his parents again. He was still a bit cautious because the final say about their daughter lay with Sasha. He did not want to make Sasha unhappy.

For now, their relationship was quite harmonious. Even though they were not a real couple, they both wanted what was best for the little one, so they had common ground.
