Chapter 9: Learning

“…Which means, my body couldn’t handle this unusual change.”

At first, he felt a bit dizzy and his vision went dark. After a short while, Fang Jing started to feel a little better, but his temples still throbbed with pain. Besides that, he was tired and sleepy, and could barely keep his eyelids open.

This was probably the side effect of using that ability!

He tried sitting on a chair, rested for a moment, and ate a few prepared energy bars. Then he felt his mind calm down.

“Let’s test how it feels…”

Without much hesitation, he rummaged through the cardboard boxes piled in his room and pulled out a Bamboo Sword.

When Fang Jing reached out and gripped the handle of the Bamboo Sword, that strange feeling appeared again. He could clearly sense the long blade of the Bamboo Sword as if it had become an extension of his own arm.

He held the hilt with both hands, swung the Bamboo Sword, and made a cut using the “Suburi” method.

Whoosh!

Even a Bamboo Sword had striking power when swung through the air, but his posture wasn’t quite right, so he couldn’t use all his strength.

Fang Jing shifted his steps slightly using the “Suriashi” footwork, adjusting his body’s movement. He began to assume the common stances of Competitive Kendo—the holding postures: Jōdan, Chūdan, Gedan, Hasso, and Waki. These were the five stances still preserved in modern kendo, and they were the most basic foundations.

“Great!”

Every movement flowed naturally from his mind. If he had to describe it, it was as if he had really practiced for many years. In reality, Fang Jing had never touched martial arts equipment in his past life, let alone received any training.

“And, my strength increased a little too.”

A direct increase of 0.1 in the attribute value—this subtle change was still faintly noticeable.

He swung the Bamboo Sword fiercely, and a strong gust of wind swept through the room, like a flash of lightning cutting through the air.

“Great! This also confirms the general effect of this Fate Fragment data.”

It did share some similarities with the game “Peerless Fate.”

Fang Jing began to recall the game he had played and pondered the connection. In “Peerless Fate,” the character roles were divided into three initial professions.

“Peerless Fate” was similar to a side-scrolling action game. Although it was just a mobile game, its design was quite original.

The first was the Fate Hunter. By continuously defeating enemies and cultivating different Fate Fragments, they grew stronger. The advantage of the Fate Hunter was that Fate Fragments could continuously evolve, developing different effects.

Additionally, by combining different Fate Fragments, they could unleash various attack, defense, and support skills. They could even combine Fate Fragments to erupt with different attack effects.

The second was the Soul Beast Tamer. They focused on refining Fate Fragments into different Fate Fragment Beasts, releasing these trained and tamed creatures to attack during battle.

The third was the Fate Devourer. This was the most unique profession. When they defeated enemies, they absorbed different Fate Fragments. All absorbed Fate Fragments continuously strengthened themselves. The Fate Devourer evolved and grew through their own body’s abilities, relying on physical power to fight. The more Fate Fragments a Fate Devourer absorbed, the stronger they became.

Upon starting the game, each player could choose one of these profession roles to play.

Back then, Fang Jing himself had chosen the third profession, the Fate Devourer.

After becoming a Fate Devourer, the initial Fate Fragments were Myriad Transformations and Yin Devourer, along with several random skill-based Fate Fragments.

Now, through these tests, Fang Jing realized that the Fate Fragment data in his mind was not false.

He could completely use Growth Value to strengthen his skills, then use the buffs from skill Fate Fragments to continuously add points to his five attribute values.

“So, as long as I keep learning a lot of combat skills, or continuously strengthen my subject knowledge, my five attributes will keep increasing, and skills can be mastered quickly…”

Great, it seemed he should learn more skills. Or through this method, he could increase his own strength.

He silently considered this point.

“Watch carefully, this move is called ‘Kata Guruma’…”

The Judo club at Kiryō High School was a traditional club and one of the most famous clubs in the school.

This long-established club had participated in many inter-school joint competitions. There was even one group of students who had competed for a spot in the top sixteen of the National High School Judo Championships.

The team captain, Haneima Shima, had a somewhat sturdy build. His height was also impressive, making him look more like a sumo wrestler than a judoka.

He was demonstrating Judo moves to the new club members. Although the Judo club recruited some sports specialists each year through the school’s efforts, it also worked to attract “new blood” from within the school.

Haneima Shima’s Kata Guruma was executed flexibly and quickly. It was hard to imagine someone of his build moving so nimbly.

The Judo club members sat on the Tatami, listening to Haneima explain the key points of the “Kata Guruma” technique.

In fact, most members present had practiced this move before, but Haneima intentionally explained it in detail. He also covered the related techniques of “Kata Guruma” and the gripping methods to use.

Fang Jing also sat among the members. His expression was calm as he observed Haneima Shima’s movements while also checking his own skill bar.

(Judo, Not Started, Progress: None)

He had never learned Judo skills before. Only after starting to learn would it appear in the skill bar.

“However, it seems the gray state can’t increase progress. It needs to change to ‘Started’ first.”

He had been in the Judo club for over ten minutes, but the skill bar hadn’t changed much.

“Nishizuka over there, would you like to give it a try?”

Haneima Shima was a second-year student, the same grade as Nishizuka Tsukasa. Previously, third-year students were under pressure from entrance exams, so they couldn’t easily participate in club activities.

Fang Jing had come to the Judo club specifically under the pretext of “club visitation.” Other clubs might have refused such a reason, and some might even look at him with displeasure.

After all, the spring club recruitment had already ended, and no new members would join at this time. Moreover, Nishizuka Tsukasa was a second-year student, so no one believed he was serious about joining the club.

However, captain Haneima Shima was very generous and agreed to his request, allowing him to visit.

With permission granted, he carefully observed the Judo moves and verified them in his mind.

He recorded all of Haneima Shima’s actions, but it wasn’t enough to make Judo a started-level skill.

If it reached the started level, he could immediately use Growth Value converted from Yin Energy for direct strengthening, quickly improving the skill.

Fang Jing could now conclude that by using strengthening methods, his combat skills could be raised instantly.

The principle should be the same as his previous tests.

Facing Haneima Shima’s invitation, Fang Jing stood up readily. But in others’ eyes, it was just a gloomy guy with glasses pushing up his glasses, standing up and taking small steps onto the Tatami, waiting to be beaten.
