Chapter 193: Things Got More and More Interesting
Thanks to these guys working so hard at their performances, the situation at the scene became more and more chaotic. The Special Forces were so helpless. They couldn’t actually fire their guns; they could only shout reprimands loudly. But shouting reprimands was useless. Wasn’t it? In no time at all, these migrant workers had pushed them right up to the front of the Police Station.
“Quiet down. Anyone who causes more trouble gets arrested!” Liu Jiangnan roared like an idiot. That moron had no idea that behaving like this only made people angrier.
As the crowd of onlookers grew larger and larger, another group appeared from around the street corner. Some held cameras, others held microphones. Four or five injured guys led them to the front of the Police Station.
One, a man in his forties with a bandage around his head, was naturally Chen Laosan. The journalists were also invited by him following Tang Chen’s plan.
“Journalist friends, this is the place. It’s this Bureau Chief who arrested our boss!” Chen Laosan pulled a female journalist to the front of the migrant workers, then thudded to his knees and wailed: “Journalist friends, you have to give us justice!”
Damn. The Special Forces soldiers were all thunderstruck again. Dammit, how did he just kneel like that? What kind of stunt was he trying to pull?
The female journalist quickly helped him up, saying, “Uncle, please don’t get upset. You can tell me everything that happened.”
Chen Laosan grunted, then forced out a few tears. Fuming, he pointed at Liu Jiangnan and said: “Hello everyone, audience members and journalist friends. My name is Chen Laosan. I used to be a gang boss mixed up in the underworld for many years. Before meeting Young Master Tang, I was worthless thug who only knew murder, arson, and robbery. But after meeting Young Master Tang, I felt like a glimmer of light finally appeared in my life.”
These nauseating lines weren’t Chen Laosan’s own thoughts, of course. He had them written by someone, just to make the speech more tear-jerking.
“It was an unforgettable afternoon. I met Young Master Tang in the flowerbeds of the neighboring family’s place. Young Master Tang said to me very seriously, ‘Laosan, there’s no future living a life like this forever. In the underworld? You eat only by your youth. You’re old now; muscle has turned to fat. You can’t fight anymore. Haven’t you thought about changing paths?’ I told Young Master Tang I knew I’d hit a wall, but that I just couldn’t manage the shift. But do you know how Young Master Tang answered me? He simply said right then, ‘It’s okay, Laosan. If you truly want to become someone good, I’m willing to help you.’ From that day on, Young Master Tang wired money to my Bar every single month. Money used for renovating the Bar, money to help me and my brothers pull ourselves into prosperity. Yet! Yet such a kind, lovely, gentle Young Master Tang has been arrested by this Bureau Chief on ridiculous charges! I hate it!”
Chen Laosan truly was the Fighter Jet of acting. The tears appearing on demand, these heart-wrenching accusations… he portrayed the image of someone pushed to the extreme limits of rage and sorrow perfectly!
Chen Laosan grabbed the female journalist’s hand, then continued in a tearful voice: “Miss Journalist, my brothers and I, we’re uneducated. We don’t understand any laws. But we all know one thing: good people shouldn’t be wrongly accused. We truly had nowhere else to turn. We can only hope you journalists will uphold justice for us.” As he finished speaking, several of his thug subordinates behind him also knelt noisily on the ground, loudly chanting about injustice and being wronged.
The female journalist was visibly moved. She nodded seriously and said, “Rest assured, Uncle. The law still exists in this society.” With that, she strode towards Liu Jiangnan and said angrily, “Director Liu, is what they said true?”
Liu Jiangnan snorted dismissively. “All lies. Our Police Station will deal with this matter ourselves. No need for you journalists to interfere.”
The journalist retorted sharply: “Lies? I don’t think so. If one or two people said this, perhaps it could be lies. But do you genuinely believe so many people would band together to complain falsely? Though I’ve never met this ‘Young Master Tang’ they speak of, I imagine anyone who inspires such support must be a truly decent Boss. Don’t you think you owe the public an explanation?”
“Explanation? Explanation for what? Ridiculous! I, the dignified Police Bureau Chief, owe you explanations? You journalists better mind your own business too. I’m warning you: if you don’t leave right now, I’ll have you all arrested!” Liu Jiangnan was unbearably arrogant, thinking his position as Bureau Chief made him really hot stuff. He didn’t even regard journalism, a sensitive profession, as worthy of respect.
The female journalist’s face flushed an angry grayish-green. “This isn’t butting in! We are Journalists! We have the right to convey the truth to the people!”
Liu Yanran breathed a sigh of relief and allowed herself a small smile. Looks like she hadn’t needed to be so worried after all. Tang Chen could handle this himself. She wasn’t stupid; she could easily tell this entire scene had been arranged by Tang Chen personally.
“Truth? What damn truth! Not leaving? Fine! Arrest them all!” Liu Jiangnan yelled loudly, then ordered the Special Forces to prepare to make arrests.
“You dare arrest people? Is this openly disregarding the law!?” the female journalist shouted, throwing her microphone onto the ground. She stepped directly in front of the Special Forces, a look of fearless determination etched on her face. Seeing this, Boss Pang, Chen Laosan, and the others immediately began shouting again, deliberately stirring up the atmosphere at the scene.
Liu Jiangnan raged: “What the hell are you waiting for? Arrest them, damn it!”
Liu Jiangnan’s words only made the Special Forces soldiers feel more resentful internally. Make arrests? Why the hell didn’t he handle it himself then? Damn idiot. Arresting people here, in this situation? If anyone got pushed or shoved during the arrest attempt, who knew what kind of further chaos these bastards would cook up again?
Meanwhile, inside the Interrogation Room, Tang Chen listened to the noisy chaos outside and burst into laughter. He said contentedly, “Looks like Boss Pang and the others followed this Young Master’s instructions. Director Liu, well, well. It’ll be interesting to see how you get yourself out of this one.”
The System chimed in, sounding impressed: “Honorable Host, I must admit, this incident makes this System see you in a new light. Mastering the art of subduing your enemy without actually fighting! Masterful trick! Seems spending so much time with this System really has sharpened your mind.”
Tang Chen rolled his eyes. Masterful trick my ass! Damn System— even at a moment like this, the thing couldn’t stop singing its own praises. How shameless.
“Hopefully Sister Xiao has taken care of her part already by now. Things sure are getting more and more intriguing,” Tang Chen smiled and murmured softly to himself. He hoped Xiao Ruiqi wouldn’t let him down.
At that very moment, inside Governor Ha’s residence, Madame Ha was sipping red wine and watching TV. She even started humming a little tune unconsciously. Just thinking about getting such satisfying revenge made her feel exhilarated.
“Feeling bold enough to enjoy your wine here? Look what huge trouble you’ve stirred up.” Governor Ha walked over angrily. “You only said you wanted to teach him a lesson! Why did you have to make it this big? You not only stripped Chen Mingdi of his position, you even sent Liu Jiangnan personally to the city to make the arrest? Are you honestly afraid people won’t know just how influential the Provincial Governor’s wife can be?”
Madame Ha sneered coldly. “What do you care? In the end, we already agreed. I have full authority over this entire affair. So what? Changing your mind now? Want me to bring that matter out into the light?”
“You! Fine! Do as you please.” The mention of ‘that matter’ instantly brought a flicker of shadow to Governor Ha’s face. If it weren’t for that unfortunate secret this woman caught him slipping and managed to seize… if not for that, why would he ever tolerate her recklessness now?
Ding-ling-ling!
Governor Ha’s Mobile Phone rang. He picked it up and saw it was his Secretary calling, so he answered, “Xiao Hu, what is it?”
Secretary Xiao Hu spoke with urgency: “Governor, please check Weibo immediately. Someone anonymously posted claiming their Boss was arrested by officials and some other accusations… anyway, it’s already causing a heated debate online.”
“What? Let me see!” Governor Ha quickly ended the call and logged into his Weibo account. Sure enough, he saw a hot post topping the real-time search trends. The title read: “Rabid Bureau Chief Arrests our Boss! Who Pulled the Strings?”
The post was meticulously detailed. It started with the story of his Boss being arrested by the newly appointed Police Bureau Chief and presented a sharp analysis of all possible hidden motives beneath the surface. The comments underneath were pouring in fast and furious.
“Z City’s Young Master Tang again! Just how many things has this Young Master Tang done recently? He’s on Weibo trending daily!”
“For sure! Do you think this might be deliberate hype?”
“Doesn’t seem like it. What they described was pretty well laid out. Plus, who daring to hype things would actually drag a Police Bureau Chief into controversy?”
“My family is in Z City. Heard the news earlier: all hell’s broken loose outside the Police Station.”
As Governor Ha scrolled through comment after comment, his face literally twisted with fury. He stood up, went towards Madame Ha, and slapped her hard across the face.
Smack! Madame Ha was knocked clean off her feet onto the floor. She covered her cheek and scrambled up, howling like a banshee: “Why did you hit me? Are you insane?!”
Governor Ha was a breath away from completely erupting. He finally lost all control: “Hit you? I damn well want to kill you! Did you grow some actual brains? I specifically warned you not to blow this out of proportion! Why wouldn’t you listen? See what your meddling did?! It’s blasted all over Weibo! Let’s see how you clean this mess up!”
Ding-ling-ling!
Governor Ha’s furious tirade was interrupted as the Mobile Phone’s ringtone sounded once more. For some reason, this particular ring suddenly filled him with a profound sense of foreboding.
