Chapter 2: Instinct for Survival

Chu Mu was standing in the fifth row, fourth column. He knew that if he did not think of a way soon, he would likely become one of those fifty children eliminated by death.

Regarding the Fang Wolf, a type of Soul Pet, Chu Mu had a certain understanding. While with his family, he had already learned about Soul Pets through various means.

The Fang Wolf belonged to the Demon Beast Realm—Bestial Type—Wolf Kind. Judging by the fur color and height of the Fang Wolves before him, they had roughly grown to the Eighth Tier.

For a creature like the Fang Wolf, reaching the Eighth Tier was absolutely no less formidable than a strong adult wielding a machete! Therefore, Chu Mu knew that to survive, the goal was definitely not to defeat these Fang Wolves. Instead, he should find a way to avoid their attacks as much as possible until fifty other children were killed first!

“Howl!”

“Howl! Howl!”

The chilling wolf howls sounded again, carried on a sinister, murderous wind!

Following the order from those cruel men, ten hungry Fang Wolves immediately pounced on this group of unarmed children. The sounds of crying, screaming, and wolf howls instantly mingled together!

The neat ranks fell into chaos at this moment. The children on the outer edges desperately squeezed toward the center of the group, just to avoid being the first to be bitten to death by the Fang Wolves.

However, the area was only so big, with a hundred people in total. No matter how much they pushed and shoved, a few with weaker physiques were inevitably pushed to the very outside!

“Ahhh~!”

A sharp, wretched scream rang out. A pale-skinned boy’s arm was directly bitten off by a larger Fang Wolf. The tender arm dangled between the wolf’s fangs, and bright red blood dripped horrifically from the wolf’s lips!

“Ahhh~!”

“Ahhh~!”

A few more miserable screams followed. In another direction, several more boys fell under the Claw Blades of the Fang Wolves. Sharp claws easily tore through the children’s tender skin, going deep into the flesh, where bones could be seen.

The Fang Wolf’s sharpest methods of attack were its fangs and claws. These pale claws mercilessly tore at the children’s faces, stabbed into their bodies, and some were even directly bitten through and had their throats pierced!

The startlingly bright red blood gathered into small streams on the muddy ground, flowing silently.

Inside the arena, the young children’s agonizing wails and screams, their crawling and rolling covered in wounds, their fearful and despairing eyes, and those small bodies already lying in pools of blood created a scene of unparalleled misery.

Yet, in stark contrast, were the cold, unfeeling Stewards surrounding them, some even letting out sadistic, crazy laughter…

Chu Mu’s position was near the center of the crowd, which allowed him to avoid the first few waves of the Fang Wolves’ attacks. But as these children desperately fled and crowded together to survive, Chu Mu gradually became exposed within the Fang Wolves’ line of sight.

Fortunately, there was another boy in front of Chu Mu. Chu Mu remembered this boy’s name was Zhou Shengmo, and he seemed to be one of those with the best aptitude among this group sent to the Green Nightmare Demon Island.

Chu Mu knew this was an extremely cruel island. Showing pity for others was equivalent to sending oneself to a dead end, especially when one lacked strength. So, when he saw the Fang Wolf pounce toward Zhou Shengmo, Chu Mu decisively chose to ignore it.

Zhou Shengmo was somewhat larger in build, about half a head taller than Chu Mu. When he saw the Fang Wolf lunging at him, Zhou Shengmo’s face also turned pale, and he subconsciously stepped back.

Zhou Shengmo’s movements were fairly nimble. He was barely able to dodge a Dark Snatch attack from the Fang Wolf. However, once the Fang Wolf adjusted, Zhou Shengmo would probably have a hard time dodging again.

And right at this moment, Zhou Shengmo noticed Chu Mu beside him.

Seeing Chu Mu, Zhou Shengmo seemed to see a hope for survival. He actually lunged at Chu Mu and, relying on his stronger body, grabbed Chu Mu and forcefully pushed him toward the Fang Wolf!

Chu Mu did not react in time. His thin frame was immediately shoved toward the Fang Wolf’s pale white fangs!

The two sharp, pale white front teeth were at least twenty centimeters long, extending well past the jaw. They were now exposed right under Chu Mu’s eyes. From this close, Chu Mu could even smell the terrifying breath exhaled by the Fang Wolf!

The Fang Wolf’s attack was a purposeless slaughter. As Chu Mu got close, the Fang Wolf immediately opened its maw and bit toward Chu Mu’s neck!

At the brink of life and death, Chu Mu strained to twist his body, dodging this fatal strike from the Fang Wolf. But at the same time, Chu Mu felt a cold sensation on his neck; it had clearly been grazed by the sharp fang!

After twisting away, Chu Mu took the momentum to roll on the ground, rolling out three or four meters!

“Thud thud~!”

Footsteps sounded behind Chu Mu. He immediately realized the Fang Wolf that had missed its bite was now pouncing toward him. Panic rose in his heart, but he tried his best to stay calm.

Chu Mu remembered all the abilities of a Fang Wolf. If he guessed correctly, the Fang Wolf attacking from behind would surely choose Savage Wolf Assault!

Savage Wolf Assault was a continuous claw attack that most Fang Wolves could perform. Even an adult would likely be directly killed under this barrage of at least four powerful Claw Blades!

Gritting his teeth and guessing the Fang Wolf’s move, Chu Mu immediately crouched down and curled himself into a ball.

Originally, simply lying flat might have allowed him to dodge this attack. But Chu Mu knew that if he lay down, he would likely be pinned by the Fang Wolf, leaving only death as his fate.

By curling into a ball, he could protect his vital areas to the greatest extent. When the Fang Wolf paused between attacks, he could then run for it!

Sure enough, the Fang Wolf chasing Chu Mu extended its claws. As it got close, it immediately unleashed the Savage Wolf Assault. Instantly, four powerful claw strikes flashed with a cold light as they sliced through the air!

“Swish! Swish! Swish!” Three claw strikes missed because of Chu Mu’s crouch.

“Rip~!” The fourth one, however, directly tore open Chu Mu’s back, leaving a deep gash. Blood immediately gushed forth!

Chu Mu gasped sharply. The intense pain in his back felt like a blazing fire.

The claw had torn through Chu Mu’s flesh, skin split and flesh torn open. Blood slid down his back…

Chu Mu clenched his jaw. As the Fang Wolf finished its attack, he sprang up from the ground and immediately ran toward an area without Fang Wolves. The blood on his back splattered on his footprints as he sprinted wildly!

At this moment, Chu Mu’s face was pale and bloodless, even twitching slightly, yet it held a look of frail but resolute strength and determination.

For a fifteen-year-old child, this expression meant more than just bravery and perseverance. It also held the instinctive desire to survive born from desperation—the very instinct for survival.
