Chapter 22: Beast Horde Siege (Part Two)

The tremors were so strong even a hundred miles away from the city, showing how massive this Savage Beast invasion was.

Yang Tong arrived at the school’s gathering area. The entire Zone 5 was crowded everywhere, with students from both lower and higher grades. Classes were organized by their homeroom teachers, who were counting their students. This way, if they had to evacuate, they would have an exact number.

Soon, Yang Tong found the gathering spot for Class Five of the sixth grade.

“Hey, guys, look who’s here.”

“Yang Tong!”

“It’s Yang Tong!”

“Yang Tong—”

Both familiar and unfamiliar classmates greeted him warmly. After all, Yang Tong had brought honor to Class Five by winning the Grand Final Tournament. Even though his victory had some issues—Zheng Meimei and Di Xuanluo were both absent due to mutual injuries—no one could deny that his championship followed all the rules.

“Yang Tong, hurry and line up. Principal Long will speak soon, so listen carefully,” the homeroom teacher called kindly. She was very fond of Yang Tong because his victory had earned her recognition from the school.

“Oh, okay, teacher,” Yang Tong said, joining the line.

Feng Xiaobo squeezed into line next to him, looking worried. “Yang Tong, we’re really unlucky this time, running into a Beast Horde Siege that only happens once in decades. Do you think we’ll get through this safely?”

“Probably. The city has millions of people. Even though the city guard is only three hundred thousand strong, there are at least two million skilled mercenaries,” Yang Tong replied thoughtfully. Mercenaries included both men and women—most adults, except the very elderly and young children, had combat skills and could handle firearms. Even some elders and children could shoot. That was why firearms had become so popular: they were easy-to-use lethal weapons. With enough energy, they were effective against Savage Beasts during a siege.

In the county, except for those too old or bedridden to move, the elders had already arrived. After receiving spirit-energy rapid-fire guns and enough Beast Crystals, they went up to the city walls to help defend.

Since the Southeastern Campus was closest to the city wall, everyone gathered there within an hour.

“Students, please quiet down,” Principal Long’s voice rang out.

Sure enough, Area 5 quickly fell silent.

“Luoyu County is at a critical moment of survival. I won’t waste words. Soon, your homeroom teachers will assign you tasks to assist in the battle on the walls. Anyone who slacks off will be expelled—no exceptions,” Principal Long said sternly. “Rest assured, we’ll assign tasks based on your abilities. Most will involve logistical support, but even those jobs are crucial. No carelessness is allowed. Understood?”

“Understood!” tens of thousands of voices responded together.

“Good. Tasks will be assigned shortly. Your contributions will be recorded for future use. All homeroom teachers, come for a meeting,” Principal Long added.

All homeroom teachers from every grade and class left for the meeting.

Half an hour later, the teachers returned to their classes and began assigning tasks based on each student’s abilities.

Homeroom teacher Xue Ying was very competent. She understood each student’s abilities and personalities, even their friendships. When assigning tasks, she often grouped close friends together to handle one job.

For example, Yang Tong, Feng Xiaobo, and Ai Dong were grouped together. Their task was to go up to the city walls with spirit-energy rapid-fire guns and fight Feiqiu Beasts! A few third-level Probationary Martial Artists from Class Five got the same task. Of course, they could refuse and choose logistical tasks instead.

Yang Tong understood the purpose: this was training. Most of these youths had never killed before, let alone faced such a rare, large-scale event. Bringing them to the walls to fire a few shots and experience the scene would help their growth. Of course, it might also leave psychological scars and hinder their future development. But survival of the fittest was cruel.

After a while, the school issued Type A spirit-energy rapid-fire guns to each class. Each person received one gun, two low-grade medium Beast Crystals as ammunition, a backpack of food, and some healing potions.

“Lucky we don’t have to use our own weapons,” Feng Xiaobo said with a sigh.

Ai Dong nodded. “Low-grade medium Beast Crystals are enough for ten days of fighting.”

“Let’s go. To the walls,” Yang Tong said. He was pleased the school provided guns and stored his in his Storage Ring.

Led by their martial arts instructors, elite groups from each class left the gathering area and headed for the walls.

“Teacher Zhang, do you think we can win?” asked some nervous, emotionally unstable students.

Zhang Tianming replied calmly, “I can’t answer that. But once you’re inside the bunkers on the wall, do not leave without orders. As long as you stay in the bunkers, you’ll be safe.”

Under Zhang Tianming’s lead, Yang Tong and the others quickly reached the city wall.

From a distance, they hadn’t noticed much. But upon reaching the wall, they saw how vast it was—like a giant plaza—showing how thick the wall was. It wasn’t completely exposed either. Rows of bunkers lined the wall, one every five steps, each holding thirty to forty people.

The most spectacular sight wasn’t the bunkers, but the terrifying flocks of Feiqiu Beasts swooping down from the sky. They were shredded by lasers, their body parts flying everywhere. Some chunks hit the wall, splattering blood—a horrifying scene.

Some students couldn’t handle it and retched; others nearly fainted.

Yang Tong gulped. The scene was too bloody, scarier than any horror movie. Movies were fake, but this was real—a brutal war between humans and beasts.

“Hurry into bunkers 19841 and 19842!” All sixth-grade students and teachers entered the bunkers with corresponding numbers.

Inside, they saw the bunkers were well-built. They weren’t fully enclosed; there were plenty of viewing windows and firing ports, providing good visibility without compromising the bunkers’ defensive capabilities.
