Chapter 166: Sea Beast Attack

“How are you alone? Where are Gu Feixing and the others?”

After turning in the Quest, Yang Liu breathed a sigh of relief, her expression much calmer. Chen Mo stepped forward, puzzled, and asked.

“They got stuck inside the city.” Yang Liu briefly described what happened to her that night.

Before the Crimson Poison Mist appeared, Yang Liu and the others had returned to the city to resupply. However, just before entering, her roommate contacted her with urgent business, so she logged out temporarily outside the city walls. Gu Feixing, Luo Hua, and the others went into the city.

Unexpectedly, when Yang Liu logged back in, the Crimson Poison Mist had swallowed the whole Eastern Sea City. Gu Feixing, Luo Hua, and the others couldn’t get out. The group waited for an hour, but with no solution, they each logged out to check the forum for news instead.

Yang Liu waited outside the city for a while. She then joined a random team hoping to farm some Points. They fought monsters near populated areas, so it was quite safe. Nothing happened until a bit over half an hour ago when the random team disbanded. Yang Liu started back alone and ran into a heavily injured NPC covered in blood. That NPC handed Yang Liu a letter, told her to get it to the City Lord’s Mansion, and then died.

This letter delivery Quest had a time limit. The Crimson Poison Mist stubbornly refused to clear, leaving Yang Liu anxiously stuck at the city gate. That was when Chen Mo happened to emerge from the city.

So that’s what happened. Chen Mo nodded. It seemed Yang Liu’s luck was pretty good. The Quest reward for delivering that letter probably wouldn’t be low.

“What’s that Pet of yours? It seems really strong.”

Girls were naturally curious. After finishing her own story, Yang Liu remembered Chen Mo’s Pet. It was the most amazing Pet she had ever seen in the Game, seemingly unafraid of the Crimson Poison Mist.

“Of course it’s strong. This Pet is unique. How about this? I’ll take you out to fight monsters and farm some Points.”

He needed to test the Sea Spear skill outside anyway. Taking Yang Liu along to farm Points was a chance to raise her Favorability. Killing two birds with one stone!

Yang Liu hesitated briefly. Their previous pose had been quite ambiguous. But thinking Chen Mo had been very restrained, she nodded. “Alright.”

Hehe, promising!

Chen Mo wasn’t a fool. He knew Yang Liu wouldn’t willingly get physically close to a guy just to farm Points. Her agreeing to go out meant she already held significant Favorability towards him.

The two immediately prepared to leave the City Lord’s Mansion. Before heading out, however, Chen Mo reminded Yang Liu to redeem her Points for rewards. If Eastern Sea City fell, the rewards might depreciate.

As they left the City Lord’s Mansion, the figure that had departed earlier in the dark suddenly halted not far away from Eastern Sea City.

This figure was none other than Eastern Sea City’s young and beautiful City Lord, Joanna.

Before Joanna stood another beauty with similarly flowing, blue, wavy hair. Behind this beauty stood a massive horde of fearsome Giant Sea Beasts!

Wisdom gleamed brightly in these Sea Beasts’ eyes, their intelligence far beyond the brutish charge of low-level Sea Beasts.

Had Chen Mo been there, he would have recognized this blue-haired beauty as the mysterious NPC he once saw beneath the ship.

“Hai Ruoou, what is the meaning of this? Is the Sea Clan breaking the ancient pact?” Joanna stared at the Sea Clan NPC, her face frosty.

“No. The Sea Clan honors agreements.” Hai Ruoou looked at Joanna calmly. “Maybe you don’t realize this, but when that pact was originally signed, I had already renounced the Sea Clan. I stand before you now, belonging nowhere.”

“Hai Ruoou, you’d sink this low for the Sea Clan? Your end will not be pleasant!” Those words shattered Joanna’s composure; stunned, she stared at Hai Ruoou.

Severing ties with the Sea Clan, having no affiliation, meant receiving no protection. Once those Adventurers grew powerful, Hai Ruoou’s fate could be brutal!

“That lies in the future. Right now, I intend to destroy Eastern Sea City!” Hai Ruoou remained unmoved, indifferent to whatever future awaited her.

“I will handle her. The rest of you! Obliterate Eastern Sea City!”

Hai Ruoou issued the cool command to the hulking Sea Beasts behind her. Then she moved, a blur shooting towards Joanna.

Rage burned in Joanna’s heart. Believing the pact tempered the Sea Clan’s assault, Eastern Sea City’s preparations were woefully inadequate. Letting these Sea Beasts reach the city wouldn’t just mean defeat; it meant utter destruction!

She tried to evade Hai Ruoou and intercept the beasts. But Hai Ruoou, prepared and ready, wouldn’t let Joanna slip away or hinder the Sea Beast army’s advance.

Both were close-combat fighters. They clashed violently, blow after thunderous blow exploding across the moonlit beach.

Soon, a team of Players happened to pass by. Witnessing the epic clash between the two beautiful NPCs, they stood frozen in shock.

“These two NPCs are terrifying! Could they end up weakening each other? If that happens, we might strike it rich overnight! We could be rich!”

The Player team was thrilled. In the Game, powerful monsters sometimes fought each other, weakening themselves. Rumors on the Forum told of players stumbling upon battles between elite monsters reaping great rewards and excellent Attributes gear.

But their fantasies were cut short. One of the fighters was smashed towards them with brutal force.

“Scatter!”

Horrified, they scrambled to escape. Too late. The figure crashed down amidst them with an explosive boom. A shockwave erupted. All six Players died instantly.

“Sea Beasts! Huge Sea Beasts are charging this way!”

These Giant Sea Beasts carved an unstoppable path towards Eastern Sea City. Players who tried to stop them were instantly annihilated!

Distant witnesses fled in terror. Reports flooded communication channels wildly.

Before many could grasp the situation, the Sea Beast horde had reached Eastern Sea City’s gates.

BANG!

A massive, snow-white Walrus slammed its enormous head against the city wall. Its long, sharp tusks punched a gaping hole in the supposedly unyielding stone.

The Magic Barrier that had penned in the Crimson Poison Mist abruptly vanished, clearly a deliberate move by the Sea Clan.

Following the Walrus, countless large Sea Beasts surged through the breach, unleashing chaos upon the city.

One colossal Sea Beast, resembling the Loch Ness Monster, extended its long neck. It belched, and a torrent of steaming deep-blue liquid arced high into the air above Eastern Sea City, scattering like rain to fall heavily from the sky.

This liquid struck the buildings below like artillery shells. Anything it touched crumbled instantaneously, its terrifying destructive power impossible to ignore.

BANG!

Chen Mo and Yang Liu, walking near the city center, suddenly felt the whole city tremble. Then, they saw the sky raining deep-blue liquid.

Roars echoed from monstrous Sea Beasts. Chen Mo paled.

What happened? The giant Sea Beasts weren’t supposed to reach Eastern Sea City for at least another hour. How were they here so fast?

Something was wrong! It had to be connected to Yang Liu’s letter!

Chen Mo instantly recalled the letter Yang Liu delivered to the City Lord’s Mansion. Something unexpected must have happened with the Sea Clan’s attack plan.

The Magic Barrier over Eastern Sea City was gone. However, the Wind Magic Array in the west had stopped long ago. The Crimson Poison Mist inside the city wouldn’t vanish soon. If Sesshylow got attacked, both of them were finished.

Seeing more deep-blue liquid raining from the sky, Chen Mo urgently pointed towards a nearby church. “Let’s get inside the church! Take cover!”

Protected by its own Magic Barrier against the Crimson Poison Mist, the church offered much more safety.

Yang Liu hurried towards it. Both walked faster, urgency overriding everything else.

A glob of the deep-blue liquid whistled straight towards them. Chen Mo saw it first. Yang Liu hadn’t spotted it yet. By the time she reacted, it would have hit them.

Without hesitation, Chen Mo wrapped an arm around Yang Liu in the urgency of the moment, pulling her sharply to the left.

“You…” Yang Liu gasped, feet leaving the ground. The pose felt startlingly intimate.

BANG!

The place where they’d just been was obliterated by a steaming blast, leaving a crater in the street. Only then did Yang Liu realize Chen Mo had been saving them from the airborne attack.

The deep-blue strikes grew more frequent. Still holding Yang Liu, Chen Mo broke into a sprint. They dashed over ten meters and plunged through the church doors.

Inside, both sighed in relief. But then, another massive glob slammed viciously against the church roof. The church’s Magic Barrier shattered like glass under a hammer blow. The entire structure groaned and shook violently, large stones crashing down from the ceiling.

Behind them, the church doors exploded inward and collapsed. Chen Mo was horrified.

Holy hell, were they really going to die here?

No! That corner seemed more stable!

Chen Mo acted swiftly. He swept Yang Liu up and ran towards the solid stone corner.

BANG!

Just as they reached the corner, walls around them began disintegrating. Holding Yang Liu tight, Chen Mo squeezed them both against the juncture of the walls. Stones plummeted dangerously close again and again. He felt cold sweat break out on his neck.

If even a single rock so much as grazed Sesshylow, both he and Yang Liu were done for.

Finally, the wild shaking subsided. Though the terrifying roars and impacts continued relentlessly outside, this corner remained standing, an island of eerie silence.

“That was close. Thought we were goners.” Chen Mo let out a shaky breath.

“Hmm.” Yang Liu responded with a whisper. Finding it odd, Chen Mo looked down, only to flush in sudden embarrassment. In their frantic scramble, his hand had inadvertently pressed against the side of her chest.

The sensation was undeniably soft and yielding, surprisingly pleasant. Chen Mo found it difficult to let go immediately. But he had practiced such restraint before, resisting smaller urges to maintain that precious Favorability point gain. Sacrificing long-term goodwill for momentary gratification wasn’t worth it.

He subtly moved his hand away. Instantly, the tension eased from Yang Liu’s expression. Her Favorability towards Chen Mo noticeably increased. She reconsidered, realizing she might have unfairly judged him. Thinking back, that earlier entanglement really hadn’t been deliberate on his part.

The two huddled together in the dark, oppressive corner of the collapsed church, waiting, hoping for the Crimson Poison Mist to finally dissipate. But they soon discovered that waiting, as an intimate pair in isolation, held complexities neither had anticipated.
