Chapter 74: The Rescue

People around were also discussing this obviously unfair deal. Emotionally, they admired Liu Heming’s actions, but rationally, they still thought Liu Heming was a bit foolish.

George was the same; he didn’t quite understand why Liu Heming, who didn’t have much money, was still so impulsive.

“George, this is the result Alex wanted to see. Although I have no money, spending just two thousand US Dollars to buy Alex’s happiness feels very worthwhile to me.” Noticing the confusion in George’s eyes, Liu Heming said with a smile.

“And I don’t necessarily expect Charming Girl to run on the ranch. If I can heal her, get her to walk normally, and let her give birth to the baby in her belly, my goal will be achieved.”

“Ah, you’re the Boss, you decide.” George sighed.

He really couldn’t say much more about this. From Liu Heming’s perspective, it was right. Alex had already run to Charming Girl’s side and was stroking Charming Girl’s face with her small hands.

Besides, although the fracture was severe, it didn’t mean it couldn’t recover; at most, she just wouldn’t be able to run in the future.

“What happened?” Sasha frowned and asked when she saw them return.

What had her daughter been through? Her hair was all messy from the wind—had she been sitting in the wagon the whole way back, exposed to the wind?

“Alex saw the injured Charming Girl and wanted to save her. She only got her hair blown about; she was in my arms the whole time and didn’t get cold.” Liu Heming said after jumping off the wagon.

“Mom, Charming Girl is so pitiful.” Alex also ran to Sasha’s side and took her hand.

“Alright, alright, I really can’t deal with you two.” Sasha shook her head helplessly.

She realized it must be because Liu Heming spoiled his daughter that this happened. But she still felt a bit uncomfortable; she could spoil Alex herself, but when Liu Heming did it too, it felt like father and daughter were standing together.

“Dexter, where is that injured horse?” While the family of three was checking on Charming Girl, Jenny’s car pulled up. Before it even stopped properly, Jenny called out to Liu Heming.

“She’s right here. We didn’t know how to handle it, so we had to trouble you.” Liu Heming quickly replied.

“It looks serious, but there are no extra bone fragments. We just need to treat the wound and set the broken bone properly.” After a careful examination, Jenny said.

“The most troublesome part is the baby in her belly. Let’s handle it step by step. I’ll give her an anesthetic shot first. Since you don’t have a stable here, we’ll move her to the Warehouse later.”

Seeing Jenny about to give Charming Girl an anesthetic shot, Alex got so scared that she hid behind Sasha and didn’t dare to look.

Even after the shot was done, Liu Heming didn’t call her over. They still had to set Charming Girl’s bone, and that process would be bloody too—better not let the little one see.

At first, things went smoothly, and Jenny’s movements were gentle. But just as they were about to finish, a small problem arose. Because she had to consider the baby in Charming Girl’s belly, Jenny had controlled the anesthetic dose slightly, and now Charming Girl was in so much pain that she was starting to wake up.

Without even thinking, Liu Heming knelt on the trailer’s floor, held Charming Girl’s big head, and brought his mouth close to her ear to comfort her.

Jenny and Bill were both surprised. Liu Heming’s voice was very soft, and they couldn’t make out what he was saying, but miraculously, Charming Girl calmed down immediately. They could feel her body moving, but she didn’t let her legs shift. Though curious, Jenny completed the final step and set Charming Girl’s leg bone properly.

That one movement caused Charming Girl immense pain. The direct result was that her head lifted slightly, throwing the unprepared Liu Heming off. He crashed into the trailer with a loud “bang”—just the sound alone showed how hard he hit.

“I’m fine, don’t worry about me. Keep treating her.” Liu Heming said, rubbing the back of his head.

That hit was really hard; he could feel a big bump forming on the back of his head. He hadn’t expected Charming Girl to have so much strength when she lifted her head.

Jenny quickly put a cast on Charming Girl’s leg. Then, with Liu Heming’s calming influence, she shaved the hair on Charming Girl’s belly and did a simple ultrasound.

Fortunately, from the current condition, it seemed the baby in Charming Girl’s belly hadn’t suffered much harm. It was probably because Charming Girl had instinctively protected it that her leg bone broke.

“Dexter, there’s one more very important thing I have to tell you.” After everything was done, Jenny said with a serious expression.

“Horses rarely lie down for long periods, so you need to be extra careful watching over her during this time. If she tries to stand up again, the fractured part will break once more.”

“That’s why, whenever a horse breaks its leg, euthanasia is often chosen. It’s not because humans are cruel, but to spare the horse from long-term suffering.”

“Maybe she likes you, so you’ll need to pay close attention to her from now on. I’ll go back and think of some ways to see how we can let her rest better without affecting her leg.”

“I’ll go get a blanket from the house first, and then we’ll move her to the Warehouse.” Liu Heming nodded slowly.

Quarter Horses are also very heavy. Even with Liu Heming and Robin as the main strong helpers, everyone worked together and still struggled to move Charming Girl into the Warehouse. They only got her near the door; going further inside was too difficult.

“You’ll lie here for a couple of days. Usually, you sleep standing up, but now you get special treatment.” Liu Heming said, wiping sweat from his forehead while stroking Charming Girl’s neck.

“Hmm, you have to be good. When you’re better, you can play with me. Dad cooks delicious food; I’ll share it with you then.” Alex also ran over and joined her Dad in comforting her.

Seeing Alex go over, the two Bear Cubs hiding to the side grew braver and came closer too. Although they were bears, they had never seen such a huge animal like a horse before, and it had scared them quite a bit earlier.

When the Bear Cubs approached, Charming Girl, who had just calmed down a bit, became restless again—it was probably her instinct.

“Don’t be scared, don’t be scared. The Bear Cub is good.” Alex reached out her small hand and stroked Charming Girl’s face.

Maybe the comfort from the father and daughter worked, or maybe Charming Girl was simply too exhausted to struggle anymore. She lay there quietly.

“Dexter, we’ll leave now and go back to think of a solution. We’ll try to get Charming Girl standing by tomorrow. For today, try to feed her less; in her condition, it’s hard for her to digest well.” Jenny said to Liu Heming.

“Then I’ll trouble you. Whatever the cost, I’ll cover it.” Liu Heming nodded.
