Chapter 149: Town Defense Mission
Chapter 149: Town Defense Mission
“Will you really not let me go?” Despair filled Xiao Jian’s face.
“Sign the slave contract, and I’ll spare you!” Xu Feng said calmly. Xiao Jian sighed bitterly—this was likely his only way out.
But becoming a slave meant living a fate worse than death. His life, his mind, even his soul would belong to Xu Feng. Xu Feng could command him to live or die. Even death offered no escape—if Xu Feng knew Undead Magic, his soul would remain trapped.
“Xiao Jian, hold on! We’re coming!”
Xu Feng looked up. A dark mass of at least two to three hundred people was rushing toward them in the distance.
Joy flashed across Xiao Jian’s face. It was the Doomsday Ark Alliance—they’d arrived faster than expected. Slowly, he slipped a hand inside his coat.
Seeing Xiao Jian’s expression, Xu Feng sneered.
“Hmph, still unrepentant!” A sword beam slashed toward Xiao Jian. Already badly wounded, Xiao Jian collapsed into a Near-Death State. Regret filled his eyes as he lay there.
Xu Feng walked over. Following Xiao Jian’s right arm, he pulled out a scroll tucked inside his coat.
“Item Name: Explosive Scroll. Golden Quality. Property: Upon use, deals 1500 points of explosive damage. The target and all within three meters receive this effect. Damage increases near the blast center.”
Xu Feng smirked, storing the scroll away. With a wave of his right hand, his sword sliced open Xiao Jian’s throat. Blood sprayed.
“Flying Sword—slay!”
He flung his sword skyward toward the charging mob. Instantly, it transformed into a three-meter-long blade beam, hurtling at the crowd.
BOOM!
A ten-meter chasm split the group in two. Over a dozen fell to the ground, entering Near-Death State.
“Xu Feng, how dare you!”
“You won’t escape! Kill him!”
“Watch out! His attack is fierce—dodge, dodge!”
…
Panicked, the crowd scattered in all directions, abandoning their fallen comrades.
Xu Feng scoffed. Though the Doomsday Ark Alliance had numbers and skilled fighters, few truly stood with them. Most just sought the advantages of a large guild—eager to take but quick to flee if threatened.
Noticing the furious regret in the eyes of the lightly armored classes lying helpless, Xu Feng tossed the newly acquired Explosive Scroll without hesitation.
BOOM!
The blast created a crater three meters wide. Everyone in Near-Death State turned to corpses.
The others stared at the smoking pit, terrified. Their eyes locked on Xu Feng with fear. None had fought in the Blackwater Swamp battle. They’d only heard rumors of his strength. Lured by the 50,000 Fate Points bounty, they’d hoped for easy rewards.
The hundred-plus survivors stood frozen as Xu Feng summoned his Skeletal Warhorse, mounted it, and rode toward Nuwa Town, none daring to act.
That final strike had drained Xu Feng’s Sword Element True Qi. A coordinated attack would have killed him. But the sword beam and explosion wiping out over a dozen foes in seconds had intimidated the group. Otherwise, he would’ve been surrounded and slain.
Still smirking, Xu Feng stood by the Skeletal Warhorse. He drew a hand across his throat at the crowd, then mounted the horse, projecting arrogance.
Riding toward Nuwa Town, Xu Feng grabbed some energy-restoring food to eat.
“Nearly died there. Now the Doomsday Ark Alliance is a sworn enemy.” His tension finally eased. He felt satisfied with his bold bluff—commanding terror before over a hundred people made him feel clever like a strategist.
Back in Nuwa Town, Xu Feng went straight to Miracle Blacksmith Shop.
The shop bustled with customers. All kinds of gear hung inside. Organized sections—Weapons, Helmets, Armor, Gauntlets—made the basic shop look impressive.
“It feels a bit small…” Xu Feng thought, glancing around.
Li Min wasn’t present, only NPCs helping patrons. All three Forging rooms were occupied. Xu Feng turned and left.
Nuwa Town brimmed with people, mostly demonstrating Two Stars or Three Stars Strength. Their equipment looked complete, radiating sharp auras.
Two Chosen Ones passed Xu Feng—a man in armor with a shield and sword across his back and a woman holding a black staff shimmering with silver light.
“Did you take the town defense mission? Nuwa Town upgrades to a district camp in three days.”
“Still thinking. A Monster Siege is no joke. If we fail, there’s nowhere to run.”
“True. Too few defenders, and it’s suicide.”
…
They glanced at Xu Feng briefly, paying him no mind before heading toward the nearby Fate Store.
Xu Feng smiled slightly. Nuwa Town had only one entrance and exit—the passage through the cliffs. A Monster Siege would come through that tunnel. Failure meant being trapped like fish in a barrel. That’s why few accepted the mission despite no penalty for failure.
“Xu Feng? Boss?”
Xu Feng turned to see Li Min approaching with several NPCs.
Smiling, Xu Feng noted the Blacksmith Shop’s success. Without checking ledgers, he knew it turned profit. Li Min clearly still had her executive skills.
“Boss, why didn’t you tell me you were back? Lately, the shop—” Li Min said anxiously.
Xu Feng waved his hand. “I just looked. Impressive work.”
“Boss, there are matters I need to report.” She turned to the NPCs. “Follow the plans we agreed upon.”
After bowing to Xu Feng and Li Min, the NPCs departed.
“Boss, your gear earned us tens of thousands in Fate Points. I hired over a dozen junior Blacksmiths. Now we profit roughly eight thousand daily—and it’ll climb. With the upcoming siege, our equipment is selling fast.” Excitement flushed her face, though the scar running across it remained. Without it, she’d have been strikingly beautiful.
Xu Feng smiled warmly. “You’ve done excellently. Perhaps you can achieve even more.”
