Chapter 107: Arrival
Chapter 107: Arrival
The battle between humans and Gnolls was at its final stage. To survive, all the Mercenaries, guards, and Refugees had fought with all their strength.
A Gnoll had just crushed a human Mercenary with its Spiked Club. Before it could pull back the weapon, a spear pierced its throat, and foul blood gushed out. Before he could withdraw the spear, a Spiked Club smashed his head.
The wagon formation finally broke open after continuous assaults. Gnolls swarmed in, trying to kill the humans on both sides. The guard captain immediately led his men to block the gap. In an instant, humans and Gnolls engaged in a brutal fight in this narrow passage.
Because the space was narrow, the heavy Spiked Clubs of the Gnolls were hard to use here. Instead, humans kept killing them. But this only lasted a few minutes. The gap in the wagon formation grew larger, and human resistance became weaker.
The sounds of battle echoed far away. Animals in the Wilderness had long fled the area. A strong smell of blood hung over the battlefield. Johnson and the Barbarian Warriors finally reached the edge of the battlefield. Their arrival did not catch the Gnolls’ attention.
The fierce fight had made the Gnolls ignore their surroundings. Johnson led over twenty Barbarian Warriors to charge suddenly from behind. These Barbarians wore Iron Armor and wielded extremely sharp great axes. The Gnolls never expected enemies to appear from behind.
By the time they tried to turn and fight, it was too late. After activating Charge and Whirlwind Slash, the Barbarians became efficient killing machines. All monsters in their path were crushed by the sharp great axes.
These Barbarians were at least Barbarian Champion level, incredibly powerful. They swung their sharp great axes as if cutting melons and vegetables. With a sweep of the great axe, flesh and blood flew everywhere, and they could even cut the Gnolls’ Spiked Clubs in half.
The axe blades tore through muscles, sliced bones, and colorful innards spilled onto the ground, then were trampled into mud by combat boots. The more than twenty Barbarian Warriors tore the entire battlefield into countless small pieces like sharp blades. The Gnoll army suffered heavy losses in a short time.
The struggling Mercenaries felt the pressure ease greatly. The Gnolls surrounding the wagon formation turned to charge at the Barbarians. But this time, they clearly hit a hard wall. Rage and cruelty did not make them stronger. Seeing their comrades cut down row by row like wheat, death and fear took over again.
Facing those god-like Barbarian Warriors, the Gnolls’ morale broke, and they scattered to flee. The humans, who had prepared for a final stand, became highly motivated upon seeing the Gnolls’ defeat and rushed out of the wagon formation to chase them. But after relaxing, the exhausted humans had no strength left to pursue.
After completely crushing the Gnolls, the Barbarian Warriors stopped. Their mission was to rescue the Caravan, not to wipe out the Gnolls.
After the Caravan members cleaned up the battlefield, the convoy set off again. Johnson traveled alongside them as a guard. The Mercenaries and guards were in great awe of the Barbarian Guard of just over twenty people. On the battlefield, they had witnessed the Barbarians’ power firsthand.
When the Refugees learned that these Barbarian Warriors were from Northguard Keep, they grew even more curious about the place. With such powerful Warriors, it must be very safe there.
…
Endless Wasteland, Northguard Keep.
A black ‘long dragon’ first appeared on the horizon. The Caravan guards and Mercenaries who had been here before cheered excitedly. This journey was unforgettable for them; many had disappeared along the way, and they needed a safe place to rest and heal.
The attitude of the guards and Mercenaries also relieved the Refugees. For survival, they had brought their families and risked their lives crossing three hundred miles of Wasteland. Now they were finally reaching their destination.
Karn was lucky to survive the last battle. He even killed two Gnolls together with the Mercenaries and guards, which improved his relationship with them considerably.
A cool breeze swept across the Wasteland. The black line in the distance grew clearer. Soon, they found a neat gravel road under their feet, winding toward the distant town. Vast fields began to appear. There, they finally saw the ‘long dragon’ crawling on the ground clearly.
It was a majestic structure like a viaduct, one end connecting to the river, the other to the town. On the river, there were four huge wheel-like objects. Everything before their eyes was stunning for the Refugees who had grown up in the Northern Provinces and never left.
Common people in this world had very narrow horizons. Many never left their village beyond thirty kilometers in their lifetime. Seeing such a magnificent building, they all stared in awe.
Northguard Keep stood on a hill. It was not very large, but the surroundings were surprising. Outside the town, thousands of Goblins, Kobolds, and Gnolls worked under the overseers’ whips. The overwhelming momentum made the Refugees yearn for it.
The closer they got to Northguard Keep, the more awestruck they felt. Those fierce and cruel Gnolls, Goblins, and Kobolds were as humble as dust under their feet.
“We’ll arrive soon.”
After fighting together, the Caravan guards had become quite familiar with Karn. One guard looked at this rough-looking man and said with a smile, “After we reach the town, someone will arrange for you. In Northguard Keep, as long as you work hard, you’ll have enough to eat. Work diligently for a few years, and farmland and a house won’t be a problem. Lord Su Lun is a powerful and kind Noble, so you don’t need to worry about safety here.”
“But you must be careful; there are many rules here. You must follow them seriously, or the punishment will be severe.”
“Brother, what are the rules here? Can you tell me?” Karn asked worriedly.
“Actually, it’s nothing much. The Lord here is a bit finicky about cleanliness. He requires everyone to pay attention to hygiene, bathe often, not litter, and especially not relieve themselves anywhere. If the Militia catch you, the lightest punishment is cleaning toilets or sweeping streets.” The guard hesitated slightly, and when mentioning cleaning toilets and sweeping streets, his eyes flickered with lingering fear.
“Of course, apart from these strict rules, it’s quite nice here. As long as you work for the Lord, you get two free meals every day, and there’s fish in them.”
